I was driving behind an old rear-drive Corolla sedan from the '80s yesterday, painted in a combination of rust and Toyota Racing Beige. I had to double-take when I saw a pumpkin underneath the car, since during most of my life, the axiom of POS economy car = front wheel drive has been firmly ingrained in my mind.

How refreshing to see one of these that hasn't been ruined by a drifter.

Though I will admit I'd probably lower it and upgrade the rolling stock to make it really stick in the twistys.

Pedantically, that's not an AE86, IIRC that chassis code was only for the 4AGE-equipped GT-S models. This was repping the mighty (used generously) 4AF. Perhaps a 4AFE, perhaps a 4AC. Puny ponies on the best of days, but light and willing to rev.

@Piloter: Actually, all of these cars sold in the US had AE86 in the VIN, but elsewhere they were known as AE85s.

@tiberiuswise: I know how you feel. I had an '81 corolla wagon as my first car. It was that lovely shade of Laftover-70's-toyota Brown, complented with a R.U.S.T. weight reducing body kit complete with the rare Visqueen sunroof that you could only get with the Beater edition. The vynl seats were destroyed beyond beleif, and the previous owner saw fit to install a set of pink plush seat covers that made those triple-digit South Mississippi summer days an absolute delight with the vehicles 4/40 aricondition system. The radio was a holdover A.M.-only model, and I got two stations: Country, and Engine Feedback (most of the time I listened to Engine Feedback). I thoroughly HATED every minute behind the wheel of that little machine, but now, some 12 years later, I really miss it.

Ricer kids typically skip the SR5 models because of their low performance SOHC engines and pedestrian suspensions. To quote Initial D (my god), to compare a GT-S to an SR5 is to compare the difference "between chocolate and shit."

Plenty of daily driven SR5s around here.

There's a really nice black AE86 that I see around town now and then. It's not overtly 2Fast or 2Furious-- it even has stock wheels! I lust after it, and hope it's a bitchin' sleeper.

This is one of those cars that is bought for $1,000 and then sold for $1,000 to 5 more people over the next decade. In other words, a good investment.

A little generic for DOTS, IMO. I see these every day in the working-class parts of town. Which is a testament to their durability.

Those may be the most awkward, goofy looking flip-up headlights ever.. and that's saying something, since those look stupid by definition.

Looks like a pretty decent grocery hauler otherwise, though.

Then you're standing by the side of the road in the pouring rain pulling the fuse for the motors, and hand-cranking them up to full height.
