I owned 3 of these vehicles, will own more. These are real SUVs: Go anywhere, do anything,

Still own the rolled over, $16K-investment remains of my last one.

Anyone need a mint interior, $8K-invested/8Kmi hi-po engine, HD-built 727 tranny, or lots of other new/mint goodies for one of these? Drop me a line...

Don't ask me about sheet metal or glass.

One more childhood memory. I had a hand-me-down Tonka toy of the Wagoneer with the old style Keystone grille as well as a similar Tonka J-pickup.

Then for Christmas one year I got the Tonka "Smoky the Bear" playset which had a ranger's office and came with an olive green Wagoneer. So at one point, I had a fleet of 3 Tonka Jeep trucks. Probably another reason I think so fondly of these classic trucks.

My cousin had a '70s-era Wagoneer in red, sans woodgrain with the flat, round wheel covers over white steelies.

I can remember my brother and sister and I riding with my cousin and his then fiance to a ski lodge in northern Michigan. I remember it being a very comfortable ride, and I can remember he had the long bench seats front and back that were either Indian print or were covered with Indian print blankets. Very nice.

That's pretty much deluxe, compared to how these things started out--sort of like the bare bones of the first Bronco.

Seems like 4WD in Alameda would be of no use at all, at least until the big earthquake hits.

My dad had a purple one for a while that he used as a plow truck. When it ran. It didn't work as a plow truck very long but it was in rough shape when he bought it. But it was purple!

I had 1984 Cherokee, the first year for the downsized version. It had a Chevy 2.8l V6 mated to a Chrysler Tourqueflight (sp??) trans. One of the electric windows didn't work becuase the prior owner spilled some cola down into the switches. So one day I set out to clean the switches. What did I find? You guessed it - Ford switches. To be honest, I don't really know if anything in the Cherokee was made by AMC.

@1998S90: i love AMC and all.. but that was the way that the company was always explained to me while i was young (early/mid '80s)... American Motor Company... that is... a combination of the American motor companies... resulting in a mish-mash of parts from the formerly quite large three..

love me some marlin though (really like all AMCs..)

Must disagree with you there, you saucy minx, you. I want one of these so badly. If I can find one with perfect-condition wood-grain-panelling, I am buying it, then sending it straight to the same off-road shop all the rig-pigs around here use to pimp out their F350s. My Grand Cherokee will EAT your white Super Doodie! OM NOM NOM!

My family and I had a succession of these, ending with a 2-door brown '83 Cherokee (last of the big Cherokees). I mostly lament the disappearance of the Quadra-Trac Cherokee in forest green. With forest green vinyl benches, steel padded dash and green steelies. The drive system was later used for the Eagle, I think.

The beauty of the Grand Wagoneer is that it's a do-anything "luxury" vehicle that's pretty basic underneath. A lot of people moved from these to Land Cruisers or Land Rovers. Those who went to Land Rover usually had a rude awakening.

It's a crappy picture due to lack of light, technology, and skill but I snapped this early today because it was cool looking. I don't recall seeing a 4 door 4WD International in quite some time.

I have friend who used to own one of these, in the same color and with the same decomposing faux wood trim. I guess he felt it was a little too "hair shirt" for him, because he traded it in for a Toyota Landcruiser of similar vintage. Unfortunately the Toyota had suffered some sort of under-dash wiring loom fire under a previous owner and was never quite right after that. He always lamented that exchange, and I always liked that Jeep.

This Wagoneer may not be "a to-die-for classic" to you Californicators with your OR-sterile "junkyards", and indeed I wouldn't label it as such myself, but I will say I haven't seen an '84 Wagoneer in that kind of shape since about July 17, 1989.
