    My '85 Maxima had that feature. We called her Betty, and always appreciated her for not letting us leave the lights on and running down the battery. ("Lights are ON" "Oh! Thank you, Betty!")

    @CaryAntion: My '89 Volvo 240DL (and previous 24x models a good ~10 years prior) have a much simpler method: if your car is off, your lights are off. Just leave your lights on 24/7, you'll never run down your battery, because they don't get power without the key in the ignition.

    from the pictures I don't see enough stuff to drive a speaker inside that box. I would see if the 'audio' lines go to the needle, if they do you need a preamp or something like that.

    Dammit, I made the mistake of seeing how feasible it would be to rig this into my beater Mark VIII. Looks like I could get everything except "fuel level is low" and "right door is open" simply by tapping into the chime module and parking brake switch harnesses (the same is probably true of many 80s-90s Ford products). Now I have no choice but to dig through some old Nissans on my next junkyard trip, too.

    Have you considered hooking it up to a phono amplifier? I don't see anything in those pictures that have the power to drive speakers. There looks to be a step-up transformer in the corner, but I'm just guessing.

    In the '50s Chrysler offered an in car record player that never worked too well:

    Also I once fixed a toy of my kids. It had a pull string, coil spring, and a white plastic record with 9 grooves that each made animal sounds. It would randomly land on one of the grooves with an arrow on the outside indicating what animal was going to be next. Same idea but not Datsun crazy, complicated, and small.

    @mzs: The SeeAndSay! Those were great: big old cash-register-thunk of a lever and rattling, rotating pointer. Newfangled electronics have no feel.

    I've never heard one of these things talk, how is the audio quality? I'd imagine it'd be pretty good with that type of setup. My speech-synthesizer equipped Renault had that 80's Stephen B. Hawking sound, and apparently if you had a service computer for it you could switch it from English to French or Spanish.

    @FuzzyPussycow: I never actually heard that because the French build quality conspired against me and the door sensors were crap. The one time it did work in a real problem situation was when I blew a brake line and it just started chattering up a storm and the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree with "brake failure", "service" and "the Germans flanked through Belgium!" warning lights.
