crack pipe-It's simply not possible to use the terms "nice" or "nicest" in the context of ANY Chevette--not on a car where POS was a delete option. The decimal place needs to move at least one place to the left, and probably 2, since the seller carefully avoids pictures of the driver's seat, leading me to suspect it's trashed.

@ErcoleGesh: Why oh why did I read "incest" instead of "nicest" and wonder just why you couldn't use that term regarding a Chevette?

Somebody needs to stick it on Top Gear and have it square off against a Lada at an East German military base.

As much as I'd love having a virtual lock on the subcompact class (assuming there is one) win at the inaugural Concours d'Ignorance, there are probably hundreds of other cars that I can and would rather buy for that kind of coin. Pass the pipe.

With the possible exception of the Hyundai Pony, my cousin's diesel Chevette was the worst car I have ever experienced, and I have ridden in a fair number of Ladas. There is no reason for this vehicle to continue to exist, other than as a punishment for the beancounters who have destroyed the US auto industry.

On a side note, I find it almost comical that the estimated fuel cost of $1.55/gallon on the window sticker is actually higher than my corner gas station. I can't imagine this will last.

@Bo Darville: FWIW, the Diesel Chevette was a MUCH worse piece of shit than the gasoline version. I had one (gasoline) with a 4-speed for awhile, and it was a pretty decent car overall.

Chevettes hold a very special place in my heart as I fell out of a moving one when I was twelve. Oh yes, I had worse concussions in my youth but none as memorable as being spit out of a shoebox on wheels.

    Pass me the pipe...

Even after (or maybe because of) driving a fleet of Chevettes for work for about 8 months, I'm a little nostalgic for them, I wouldn't mind picking one up at a much lower price. But the sight of that automatic transmission lever is enough to give me post-traumatic stress disorder. Terrifying isn't a strong enough word to describe a car that can barely get out of its own way, and stalls if you try to accelerate too quickly, while driving along Huron Church Rd in Windsor (part of the busiest border crossing in the world, populated by hundreds of 18-wheelers).

At first I thought it was under-priced, but then I noticed it has an automatic transmission. I wouldn't pay a dime more than $8900.00 for this chevette.

I just saw a classified ad for a 1998 Olds Intrigue with all options, including leather, and 30,000 miles for $3,995.

So where are these "painted up hussys" the seller refers to? That's grandmaw language and I don't think any Chevette, however modded, would qualify as a "hussy."

And, if I finance this for 10 years, as the seller offers, why, any budget can afford this charming 4 door "sedan."

So it's not crack--more like a Geritol OD. Hell, do they even make Geritol anymore? OK, it's a Centrum Silver OD.

"Aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?"

There are so many fundamentally wrong things here. It's a Chevette. There's a $3000 premium above the original price. It's been lovingly cared for.

    It's a Chevette.

Somebody toss this guy $250, open up the exhaust and switch out the carb to something less awful, and go beat it to death in the next LeMons.

I kind of like this car, but $8995 is a lot of dough and it's an automatic, which limits the probability of this thing reaching the posted speed limit. I could buy the world's nicest 81 Cadillac with the only working V8-6-4 for that price. Or maybe I could get GM's car of the future, the 81 Citation. Or I could go a turbo route, and get an 81 Riviera type S, a Turbo T/A or a Monte Carlo Turbo.

There were some cool GM Malaise machines from 81, but this owner has been hittin' the pipe so hard, he thinks it's the other 'Vette.

Again, not a nice price but at least a starting point of a conversation should you be so inclined.

Now someone go find me a rust-free early Vega, any body style will do, but I prefer the "sedan" (w/trunk) or the panel wagon, that hasn't had a V8 shoehorned into it already. Chop-chop.

@Slantsick- on layaway at SPATULA CITY:

I'd rock the Vega wagon in the top pic. Get the welder and some spare sheetmetal out, clean up the chrome trim, rip the seats out of 3-rd gen F-body and re-upholster them, new brake job, toss in a 327 small block backed by a 5-speed, do a quick respray in midnight blue metallic, and finish it off with a new set of torq-thrusts.

Eat your heart out, Volvo Amazon.

And thee whole Chevette thing? Crackpipe.

I'd love me some Amazon, too.

In British Racing Green with a natural leather interior and a set of black mags. . Alternatively, a bare metal exterior finish with a black interior would be bitchin', too. And, I'm sorry, as I know that many will consider this sacrilege, but I'd throw in a crate LS1.
