New Top Ten Stolen Cars List Shows Criminals Love The '90s

The National Insurance Crime Bureau just announced their list of the top ten most stolen cars, and surprisingly, most of them were cheaper older models from the 1990s. Forbes says it's because these cars' parts have a greater demand on the salvage market, which is probably true since every '95 Honda Civic we see on the road seems to be sporting a hood from some other Civic. Full list below the jump. More »

1985 Toyota Corolla AE86

We saw an AE86 Toyota with Sprinter badging earlier in this series, and now I've found one with a single Trueno emblem just a few blocks away. This '85 seems to have had the US-spec front bumper replaced with a JDM assembly, but I'm pretty sure this car was originally sold in the US. It's always good to see an AE86 still driving, since most of these things have been thoroughly hooned by two generations of leadfooted import fanatics and they're getting mighty tough to find.

Automobile Mag's Top List Of Road Trip Vehicles Gives Sprinter The Nod, Finds Way Into Our Hearts

Oh, boy: Another hot summer day, another list of top vehicles for a road trip. Whereas Kelley Blue Book's top road trip cars list — the last such list we had to endure — was one of the more strange groupings we've seen, today's list from Automobile is absolutely sexy. What, you don't think the Sprinter's sexy? You ever seen the Mercedes diesel it's got under the hood? We're not kidding when we say it's like butter. Really thick, viscous, black butter, but butter nonetheless. Hit the jump for the full list. More »

Civic Pries Best-Seller Crown Away From Ford F-150's Cold, Dead Hands

After an eleventy-billion year reign as the nation's top seller, it looks as though the Ford F-150 has stumbled for at least one month. The month of May saw the Honda Civic overtake the F-150 in sales putting the Ford down in fourth place. Whaaa!? Indeed, 42,973 F-series trucks sold in May, against 52,826 Corollas, 51,291 Camrys and 53,299 Honda Civics. Since we know Toyota counts the Matrix towards Corolla sales, we'll discount that figure, but who cares? As we called (sorta) yesterday, Civic for the win. According to Jim Farley, Ford group vice president for marketing and communications, "That's just a sign of the times. I think May has been a watershed month." Do people care about gas prices? We think this means the answer is "yes." [Automotive News (Subscription required)]

Put The Kid In The Trunk And The TV In The Backseat

People will do some pretty stupid things for a TV, or so we're learning today. First, it was the idiot burglar with the alligator in his Buick Regal and now we have the story of a trio of not-so-bright Tennesseans who really wanted to get a television home. But there were three of them and a television, and not all of them could fit in the passenger area of their Toyota Corolla. Their solution? Put the kid in the trunk and the television in the backseat. They'd have gotten away with it, too, but someone called the cops after seeing the kid, who apparently consented, get into the trunk. RWD Subaru, Toyota Sports Cars Officially Confirmed For 2010, 2011

Yesterday we showed you a concept sketch of an alleged coupe to be made by a Subaru-Toyota partnership. Scratch the "alleged" as we now have official confirmation in the form of an official statement from Toyota CEO Katsuaki "Ken" Watanabe:
"The compact rear-wheel drive sports car is envisioned to offer a new 'fun to drive' experience based on an all-new vehicle platform."
In addition we're told production will start in 2010, and Subaru's boxer four-cylinder engines will be used. The RWD Subie sports car should be available in late 2010, with the Toyota coming a few months afterwards in early 2011. More »

First Sketch Of The Rear-Wheel Drive Subaru Impreza Coupe?

Ever since Toyota started riding Subaru, we'd heard the rumors. Supposedly, that sketch right there — turns the rumors to truth. That's right, we're told that there is Subaru's upcoming rear-wheel drive coupe currently in co-development with the boys at Toyota. The story goes that this "concept drawing" was revealed to Autocar, the UK car mag, by a source with some very good contacts. Apparently the source got it via a one-armed courier who'd received the sketch from a carrier pigeon. The carrier pigeon in turn had copied it with a charcoal pencil in his beak off a tattoo on the right rear hindquarter of a guy who knows a guy who's married to a gal who's an insider at Subaru. This is, of course, only a sketch of the Subie version of the coupe. Toyota will also apparently have... More »

Corollas For Victory!

Here's another in a long line of jittery Japanese-market car ads, this one showing how a pack of tie-wearing Toyota shoprats can whomp together an '84 Corolla for fashion-deranged monogloved chopsocky experts and fedora-wearing, flask-in-bottom-drawer newsies alike, all thanks to the mighty powers of the Munificent Plutonium Wrench.

European Toyota Corolla Hatch Spotted In Phoenix

We love when readers send in their own spy photos, whether from a cameraphone, point-and-shoot or DSLR. OK, that's a lie — we absolutely prefer DSLR. But we digress. Automakers in the Phoenix, Arizona area better beware as Josh (who also grabbed the left-hand-drive Nissan GT-R) has spotted yet another out-of-place Japanese car wandering the streets. This time it's the Toyota Auris, which is the European five-door Toyota Corolla hatchback. A five-door Corolla testing in the desert, in winter, with Michigan manny plates, you say? More »

1980 Toyota Corolla Somewhat Repowered With BMW I6

It's a little known fact that one of us Jalops spent the better part of our youth traipsing around the country in the back of a 1980 Toyota Corolla without so much as a radio installed. That first parental Corolla turned out to be a gateway Toyota and was followed by an unbroken chain of Corollas extending to this very day. This is why there is an A4 in the driveway and a Continental in the garage. Things would have been different had the Corolla of our youth been powered by a turbocharged BMW inline six sporting 400 bhp and 370+ lb.ft. of torque. Ah yes, smoky power drifts though the state of Nebraska would have made cross country trips far more palatable.

Chicago Auto Show: Toyota Corolla, Meet Dave

We don't remember seeing this at SEMA, because if we had, we would have made fun of it there as well. Nonetheless, the placard claims this Toyota Corolla SE Prototype was first shown at the infamous tuner show, and we claim it was first seen somewhere in a Ford studio run by Dave "Big Balls" Horbury. Seriously — check out that grille, somebody falling in love with the Ford Fusion much? Perhaps this is a new salvo in a developing grille wars. Whatever. We feel like maybe we should be on the look out for a restyled Ford Taurus sporting a Klingon forehead grille.

2009 Pontiac Vibe Revealed On Video

Despite still being a few hours away from the official reveal, the folks at the General have graciously dropped some video clips of the new 2009 Pontiac Vibe onto a public web site, so we've decided to go ahead and run them. The video gives us a bit more of a look at the new Vibe-rator than the one press shot we've already been handed. The arrow-headed brand's newly redesigned 2009 Pontiac Vibe comes on the heels of the SEMA reveals of its two NUMMI-platform stable mates, the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix. The five-seat, crossover SUV features a revised exterior and interior design and enhanced safety features, including a tire pressure monitoring system, OnStar and an electronic vehicle stability control system. In addition, GM's also announcing the return of the all-wheel-drive and GT models to the Vibe line-up which should, you know, be something for anyone whom this car may perhaps build excitement in. Depending on the model and engine size, the Vibe's fuel economy in the city varies from an estimated 19 mpg to 26 mpg. All 2009 Vibe models are scheduled to rollout in early 2008. We'll have more shortly. UPDATE: Live reveal shots of the 2009 Pontiac Vibe below.

2009 Toyota Corolla Unveiled

The new 2009 Toyota Corolla and 2009 Toyota Matrix were just unveiled here at the SEMA show in Vegas. For some reason the folks from the super number one best awesome automaker from the land of the rising sun decided to show off one set of vehicles, un-pimped ones, to the press at the Hilton across the street. Fear not, the mighty Mike Bumbeck was covering those. But here at the convention center, we were "treated" to some heavily modded versions of the new Corolla and Matrix. That's what you see below. Press release below the jump.

2009 Toyota Corolla...Sorta

Here it is folks, just a day before it's officially unveiled here at the 2007 SEMA show — the 2009 Toyota Corolla. Sort of anyway. We mean, that's the Toyota Corolla right there, just like we'd heard it would be, waiting to be officially unveiled tomorrow. Except, well, it's all covered up in a white sheet — like a Corolla dressed up for Halloween. Which, come to think of it, is what Wednesday will be. Ha! What fun — or something.
