I'll admit it, I love big ass malaise era cars. I'm sick like that.

My favorite car of all time is a '79 Continental Town Car.

Sorry, but I can't get excited about these things. They were big and clunky and poorly-thought out and brown, and they seemed to match the world of 1982 all too well. I was 13, the age where I should have liked any car regardless of anything, but these were the cars we had to sit through while waiting for the future to catch up with us.

Just a few years before that, though, a backwards-facing rear seat and a long road trip was all I asked from the world.

@John Krewson: Sitting in the rear-facing seat in the back of a Country Squire gave me my first captive audience (whoever was driving behind me). Just forcing adults to look at you is more power than most 8 year olds can handle.

@darth eggwich del fiero: No kidding. More than one comedian of my generation has said the experience featured prominently in their early development.

    We had that model Merc.

Ah, for the days when those dinosaurs ruled the earth! Luxo-barges with interiors the size of living rooms.

And one of the wagons -- MoPar maybe-- had seating for 3 in the front, in the rear seat and two facing bench seats in the rear, for 3 more on a side.

Am I so screwed up that I'd rock each and every one of those 1977 cars? The Malibu? yes. The LTD II Brougham Hardtop? Yes. The Grand Marquis? Definitely Yes. Oh, but the daddy of them all, that 9 Passenger Squire Wagon, even in that light blue color.... wow. Of course, back in 1981, I was just making $18,000 per year, with a mortgage. And I just took delivery of a 1982 Jetta, only my second import. I didn't truly appreciate these maliase Mobiles then.

Would you rock one of these HARDER than a Exploder, TB copy, Tahoe or current 7-9 pass vehicle?

@Spilled Accordtaco salad over Malibu: I sure would. Almost as safe (assuming shoulder belts) and they're wide enough that you probably won't roll it.

@UDMan: I know it's probably ridiculous to split hairs over malaise styling, but I'd pass on the Malibu.. I've never liked the looks of those. Although, my mom had a '75 Malibu wagon (briefly) when I was a kid, and I remember being impressed by the sheer hulk of that pig. Now, I'm faintly insulted that GM called that a "midsize" car.

And in 1981, I was rockin this fine set of wheels:

That's a '77-only LTD II Squire, not an LTD Country Squire. Technically, I believe the real Country Squire was a 10 passenger in '77.

Yeah, I'd probably take any of those for $2188. Now, at least.

When I saw that there were Sunday hours, I had to do a little research, because as far back as I can remember, automobile sales have been illegal in the state of Illinois on Sunday. As it turns out, this ad makes it just under the wire. The law as it stands today was passed in 1983 (after several short lived and/or failed attempts at similar laws), forbidding dealerships from being open on Sundays.

@buickboy92: Some large dealerships wanted the day off, but didn't want to lose the sales to smaller dealerships who were willing to work on Sundays. So, the large dealerships greased a few palms, and had it made illegal for anyone to sell a car on Sunday. Illinois politics at its finest. This one dates back, in varying degrees, to the early '50s, but the law didn't stick for good until 1983.

I had one of those death traps in College. Freakn' headgasket eating oil puking pile of dingo shit.

I loved the damn thing. No back seat, just plain cruising at 30+mpg and loving every minute.
