The stripe is nature's way of saying,
"I'm cute but dangerous!"
Like one of those tiny, lethal Philippine hot peppers that look like itty-bitty baby jalapenos but then melt your tongue and blister the inside of your mouth. #1974amcgremlinx

For my money I'd much rather have a 1973 Hornet X hatchback. It was one of the most beautiful American sporty coupes of the early 1970s, and it captured the spirit of the original pony cars -- cheap, light-weight and fun -- much better than early-1970s pony cars.
I don't know why anyone would want a 1974-76 Gremlin. If you had a contest for the worst-looking 5 mph bumpers, I'd bet that the Gremlin would win. The designer of that front end should be sued for malpractice.
I didn't think it was possible, but the above-shown Gremlin makes matters much worse with the black-out fascia, dorky hood and ill-fitting front bumper from a 1977 Gremlin. #1974amcgremlinx

I agree with many here that the Cragars are a definite plus.

Fast? I'll accept "decently quick for Fuel Crisis I". Rare? 12,200 Gremlin V8s were built for '74. The survival rate is probably low. Highly sought after? Well, maybe by the hardcore AMC fans, of which there must be at least a few dozen...
"..and is sure to appreciate in value."
Can't argue with that - these cars were worth about nothing forever, so anything is a plus. This guy has a bright future in Madison Avenue.
I'll call this a Nice Price, but just barely, and don't let the dope-sniffing German Shepherds come near. The interior needs some work, that hood has to go, and some of the other mods need to be undone. It's also got the ugly '74+ bumpers and plasticky convex grille panel. I can tell you from experience that the 3-speed manual is long-throw, none too precise, not as sporty as it might seem, and needs to be ditched for a 4-speed. I would be a little more enthusiastic if this was a '72 or '73. The wheels can definitely stay.

Oh, and I do believe that the opening rear glass was an option on the Gremlin. WTF? #1974amcgremlinx

In the first year and a half of Gremlin production, AMC offered a base model with no back seat and with a fixed rear hatch. All other Gremlins had the pop open glass. #1974amcgremlinx

The Dominos one had actually been rolled and had a minimum of damage. Couple of dents on the roof and hood if I remember correctly. Pretty tough little cars.
I like it, nice price. #1974amcgremlinx

That 304 can be massaged into greatness. Finding a manual blender behind it is just fantastic, not losing any of the strangled Malaise ponies in a torque converter is a good thing. The shop class scoop on the hood is too bad, but really - a Gremlin was a shop class kind of car. So it's no surprise.
I'm not ghetto, not hip, not stylish by any stretch. My music has been John Denver and Jim Croce for over thirty years, my wardrobe has been denim and oxford shirts. Stick with the basics and you'll be fine. But am I enamored of those Cragars? Why yes, yes I am. The Cragars alone make it worth the price. That it's a funky, functional and well-preserved car is icing on the cake. This is a Nice Price. It would still be a Nice Price at $6,000.
