Were there no FORD logos on Mavericks?

@Mr_Sives_Remotoc: Ford went without the blue oval for decades. I think the late thirties until the mid 80's.

How many '70s Ford models had the same damn tailights?

By brother's best friend had one of those in the '80s. I remember, as a kid, I thought that bright red Maverick was totally cool.

Then my father, a Devoted Toyota Salesman, looked at me sternly and said: "Don't you go admiring those Mavericks... Those are a piece of junk."

What a nice, friendly, earnest ride. They went head to head with the much more solid and better Nova and, of course, lost. They were sort of like a big boy's Pinto.

What's worse, the Maverick with it's faux-sportiness or the faux-luxury of the Granada that superseded it?

Answer? The Fairmont. Despite the god-awful chassis the Maverick and Granada rode on, at least they had some degree of style. The Fairmont was a boring, cheap, junky car from bumper to bumper.

@FromaBuick6: Granada was an odd bird. Much posher than Mavericks, much smaller than a full LTD or Lincoln, maybe closer to the big ass Elite that came along--my mother--who worked her way through every Ford sh*tbox, starting with not one, but two Pintos, then a Mustang II (maybe 4 cylinders?) a Granada and then a series of Escorts, which continues to this day. There's your target market, Ford--little old ladies who like something "sporty."

@FromaBuick6: The Fairmont might have been boring to look at, but it doesn't really pretend to be other than what it is - a bottom-feeder economy car in a vaguely clean-Euro mode. The slightly more pretentious Futura coupes are almost handsome with their basket-handle roofs and forward-raked tails. If mock stand-up grilles, fancy script, excess brightwork, opera windows, fake heraldry, puffy lines, thick pillars, fake wire wheels, and cheapo-$5-whorehouse interiors equal style, then the Granada certainly has it.

@tonyola: Didn't Ford try to compare it to Audi and Volvo at the time? Of course, there was the whole "Can you tell the difference between the Granda ESS and this $20,000 Mercedes?" campaign around the same time. What a joke.

The later Fox cars, like the LTD, '83 Thunderbird and 5.0 Mustangs weren't half bad. On the other hand, the '80 Thunderbird and '81 Granada may well be some of the most pathetic cars Ford ever produced.

While I quite sure I would not want to own one, I find the odd proportions of this car quite appealing...

Sorry, but "sporty" and "Maverick" don't belong in the same sentence. Less honest than the Falcon it was derived from, this car represent Ford at its most cynical. The four-door also featured today was simply a slightly-overstyled 1960 Falcon sedan, but this thinks it's a mini-Mustang. Drive a Maverick, and you'll always be reminded why Ford sold them so cheap. This car makes contemporary Dusters and Novas seem sophisticated.
