    Pass the pipe, please!

It's infinitely cool, yes, but it's not incredibly rare or original, so now we're down to "Is it worth $7000 for the mish-mash of old tired pieces-parts and are they any good?" If they were, I doubt the present owner would have given it a $5 paint job.

I will add, though, that as a kid growing up in suburban Mass. in the early 70's, there was at least one of these on every block, so it does take me back. Maybe for $5k, I'd say "what the hell" and enjoy the nostalgia, but not for any more than that.

He tried way too hard on the paint job to make it seem truly "ratty" and he will back off the $7k pretty soon and get a little nicer...he has done a lot of work, but it is, alas for him, a buyer's market.

Seems to me this is a lazy man's classic, which is why I voted nice price. It seems all the mechanicals have been done, so all someone needs to do is slap a nice coat of paint on it for a grand and do a little interior work and it'll be tip-top. Can you put a price on that kind of time savings? Yep; $7000.

Too high to be nice price, too low for crack pipe. $5kish is fair.

We need a third catagory. We're still in cannibis territory here.

@vinnchan: Agreed. Whale shark paint makes it far too sinister to be a sleeper. Ditch the hideous hood and it needs that faded light blue that was so common of that time or maybe a nice baby-sh*t brown then it's a total sleeper.

In reply to Nice Price Or Crack Pipe: Evil, Primered, Weiand-Blown '72 Chevelle Wagon For $7,000?
By his own admission, it's not worth what he's asking.

    wagon- $3k, rims - $1k, supercharger/carb - $2200, headers/cam/exhaust - $500, axles $500, body work - $1k

I'll grant him $3k for the base wagon. The rims might have cost $1k new, but currently bolted to the car, you have to assess the value as a used set. $500. The same holds true for the supercharger setup. A used Weiand 144 should go for $1500, so that's what it is worth, and not the stated $2200. Headers/cam/exhaust, I'll be generous and throw down $300. The axles are worth zero. The body work is worth zero as well. The initial $3k base price includes the body as it sits.

$5300 seems fair. $7000 is too much.

@smalleyxb122: Exactly. $7k isn't crack but about 30 percent too high. Solid wagons of the era still lurk about for far less.

Besides, with the wheels & supercharger installed, half the fun of building your own devil wagon is over. What remains is the mincy headaches; upholstery, trim, rubber.

Man, the haterade is flowing this morning! I went Nice Price because I could probably get 5 grand for the car without the wheels, blower or built tranny on it. A Posi diff or a locker wouldn't be too tough to swap in, and those wheels and tires could probably be swapped for some nice chromed steelies with Baby Moons, maybe even with some cash back for a shrewd dealmaker. If a way could be found to get the stock hood back on (remote airbox, maybe?) it would make a sweet sleeper.

In reply to Nice Price Or Crack Pipe: Evil, Primered, Weiand-Blown '72 Chevelle Wagon For $7,000?
    Nice Price. Here is why:

The add starts with a question. This fine, upstanding gentleman is not demanding anything. He is probably a pillar of his community. I mean, he does want to trade into a Cambird, if possible.

It runs the 1/8th in 9.5s and 75 mph. Stretch that out to the quarter mile and you'll be doing 150 mph in 19s.

There is mystery there. Is the carb really 850 cfm? I don't know. It will be fun to find out though!

All the missing bits of seat and trim just make the car that much lighter. Imagine if the seats were in good shape and it had all its weather stripping? It would only do the 1/8th in like 9.75s and 73 mph. That's like only 146 mph and 19.5s. See, it helps!

So there you go. Nice price. No doubt in my mind about it.

@engineerd: No edit function. I'm starting to like the fact that we aren't into the Gerrison Keeler type of storytelling around here, where everything is scripted and rehearsed, an dwe more go with the "Talking to Grandpa" vibe where we all correct ourselves all the time and wander off into tangents having nothing to do with the story.

    01/27/09

@engineerd: You don't just double speed and time to convert an 1/8 mile time to a 1/4 mile time. From what I've heard, the usual guesstimation math is ¼ Mile ET = (1/8 Mile ET + .22) / .655 Which would yield a 14.84 1/4 mile time. I'm guessing the trap speed would be on the 90-100 MPH range, but there are too many variables to claim any of these numbers as authoritative.

I'm going to have to go with nice price. It will drag down property values pretty easily, and possibly make it's owner be forbidden from being within 500 feet of a school, because it's just that evil.

Hell, the fact that it apparently runs and appears to be owned by someone that knows not to type in ALL CAPS is good enough.
