HEV Technology Builds 41 MPG Plug-In Hybrid Ford F-150 Pickup Truck

Rather than make yet another Mustang derivative, Hybrid Electric Vehicle Technologies has done something relevant and managed to install a plug-in hybrid system in a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The resulting vehicle achieves a combined fuel economy of up to 41 MPG, up from a combined 16 MPG on the 2WD version of the truck. HEVT will now offer the technology as a retrofit on a limited basis as they conduct further testing in an effort to put it into mass production. See, how hard was that? More »

Ford Spends Time Making AV8R Mustang, Loses $8.7 Billion... Just Saying

Ford has released specs and images for its one-off Mustang AV8R, complete with silver paint and cues said to be borrowed from the P-51 Mustang fighter. The AV8R also includes pieces from the Bullitt, as well as a Ford Racing supercharger and other go-fast bits good enough for 400 horsepower. While we know the AV8R isn't the direct cause of the company's $8.7 billion second-quarter loss, we can't help but notice that it's the European Fords set to save the company, rather than something designed by the apparently preoccupied American engineers. The AV8R goes up for auction at the end of this month, but they promise the money won't be used to bail-out Ford. Press release below the jump.

BREAKING! Ford Reports $8.7 Billion Net Loss For Second Quarter 2008, Bringing Six European Small Vehicles Stateside

Ford's just released two press releases detailing an OMFG $8.7 billion net loss for the second quarter of 2008 (which includes a pre-tax special charge of $8 billion, $5.3 billion of which is for Ford North America). But more importantly to the enthusiast is news they'll be bringing to North America six European small vehicles built off the global B-car and C-car platforms and converting three large truck and SUV plants to building small cars. It's part of something the company's calling "One Ford" which we think has something to do with making every product in every marketplace the same and it looks like the European products are winning out. UPDATE: We've dropped the list of vehicles Ford's claiming will be part of the new lineup right after the jump for your convenience — it includes a Mercury small car for 2010, a European small vehicle that will be a "whitespace" entry in North America in 2010 and oh god yes, the European Ford Focus!

UPDATE #2: And the Mondeo! Dear god, it's like manna from heaven! Hmm, doesn't look like that's going to happen.

With the upcoming Death Race movie the re-make on the tips of everyone's tongues these days (yeah right, you did see "The Dark Knight" didn't you?), the good folks at Universal decided to add a "Death Race Your Ride" feature to their website. You can pick from a number of canned cars OR you can upload photos of your own ride and add Death Race equipment. Heavy armor, weapons, decals, wheels, and battle damage are your paint, and Deathrace.net is your paintbrush. The old Audi somehow just isn't that intimidating compared to the big bad Ford Mustang. Here In California, We're Crushin' Thunderbirds!

You guys who tear your hair out when you see a nice, easily restorable old car heading to The Crusher in this series... think you can work up any tears for this beyond-basket-case '59 T-Bird? I spotted it at the same East Bay wrecking yard that gave us the '69 Renault 16, and it looks like you might be hard-pressed to find many usable parts on it. Still, the engine is still there, and the front bumper looks like it might be salvageable.

Billed as the most frugal Ford ever, the 2009 Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is a special version of Ford's small Euro hatch. Powered by a 90 HP 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine calibrated for efficiency, the ECOnetic is able to return about 64 MPG (3.7L/100km). Perhaps even more impressive is the segment-leading 98g/km of carbon dioxide emissions, which is minuscule enough for the ECOnetic to avoid UK road taxes. All this tidiness is due in part to subtle aerodynamic tweaks, a slightly lower ride height, and low rolling-resistance tires. Honda Cuts Odyssey, Pilot Production, Boosts Civic

Honda, concerned about a glut of Odyssey minivans and brand-new 2009 Pilots sitting on dealer lots, has elected to trim production of the larger vehicles in favor of increasing production of the new 2009 Civic. The drop will equate to about 10,000 units combined at the Lincoln, Alabama plant, and the resulting plant downtime will be used for employee training and maintenance. What, no layoffs? Come on, throw GM a bone. At least send someone home early with half-pay. More »
