I prefer the swept lines of the '69 and '70, but the pre-bloat Cougars are all favorites of mine. And, yes I did like the more recent FWD Cougars even before someone re-bodied them to look like uber-Audis.
Of course I admit, my love for Mercury Cougars reaches almost shoe-fetishist levels. Almost.
And I'm sure now I've said too much.

But there is something about her. Some sparkle of glamour from days gone by. You know that if you and her were alone in some deserted parking lot, or on a secluded bend on an empty road overlooking the city, away from prying eyes and societal conventions, that you could slip into her upholstery, open her up, and see what she can do.
And even though you are at the controls, you know that she's in charge. If you just relax, and listen to the signals she's giving you, that old girl will awaken with all the glory and responsiveness of days gone by.
And you will be hanging on for dear life, afraid to push harder, afraid to cross the line, but most of all, afraid to stop.
And when it's over, she will have taught you things you didn't know before. About yourself, about the world, about the limits of physics and physiology. And though once you get out of her, you will leave her, and never breath a word of what you have done, you will carry the memeory of that great ride with you for the rest of your days.

It think that part of that has to do with the pattern of the paint; I don't care much for the billboard application of the blue, similar to what you find on early-seventies mopars. But the two primary colors themselves go well together.
Now, if one were to get red of the small red accent stripes and re-pattern the paint in a way similar to what the factory patterns were (see below), it would be awesome, regardless of which you color is primary and which is secondary.
Personally, I would opt for the blue as the primary color (and perhaps go with a metallic-finish) with the striping in silver. Combine that with a little polish and alignment for those wheels, a light window tint, cleaned-up tail light covers, and an Eliminator-style hoodscoop, and this sucker would be beautiful,

Other than that, I guess I have to fall back on my two (non-Fleshbot) Cougar opinions-
1) Why would anybody buy a Mustang when they could have this?
2) Four years from awesome to awful has to be a record for a car model.

The 1970 model had a different front end, but was the exact same body. As for the 1968 and 1969 models, they were virtually indistinguishable by any but a hardcore Mercury fan.

1968:
It would seem, sir, that you are correct. The 69's did receive the sweeping shoulder line. I was mistaken on that one.
