My mom had both a 1968 911E and a 1972 911 E 2.4 growing up. The '68 was pumpkin orange and, although I hated it at the time, I would give just about anything for it today.

Great looking cars, and much more accessible than the 911.

Also: Anyone else thinking Porsche might revive the 912 a second time in response to the coming Carbonocalypse? And would they dare drawing the ire of purists by asking Subaru to supply the engines?

The early SWB 911s are rare b/c they all scooted off the road ass-first.

@brandegee: Agreed. I love them. I understand engine work is just as costly as a 911 so that would scare me away a bit but I have always loved these. Great DOTS find.

@mattmacklind: Yes, a rebuild on that 356 engine costs more than the whole car. I would be tempted replace it with a VW Type 4 motor and be able to serve up much more than 100hp for much less money.

Certainly the prettiest DOTS car in a while. I wouldn't want it though - I don't trust myself enough to drive it particularly in Salt Land (I'm putting off shoveling right now actually).

Ah the 912. These are pretty much ideal cars. Eminently sensible yet relatively sporting and completely gorgeous.

Early 911s are all in living rooms at this point I think. Their owners are repeatedly checking the date codes on every part several times a day just to make sure they really do match.

@TV's Paul Y.: Oh and when early-911 owners do leave the house they get together and bitch about how everybody else is destroying their beloved Porsches with non-period-correct modifications i.e. not time-traveling back to the late-60s to perform said modifications. Any other way is WRONG.

This is truly one of the finest examples of why we Jalops love cars. She's pretty not unnecessarily complicated can handle herself and is completely unpretentious. Now if only my wife were the same... (rimshot)

Well golly. That looks like an A-series (Aug '67 - July '68) as it has the one wiper parking on the left side of the wind screen and it is black. It also has the shorter 221CM wheelbase of the early cars but lacks the round side-view mirror of the '64 - '68s. Nice looking 912.

What a beautiful and simple mechanism. Clean and pure and what a joy to drive (I have a friend with a red '65 911). Ditto to the focus group comment.

I would take this 100 times over a brand new 911.

@Adam Smith: The 912 had the 1600 cc engine from the 356C. The 911 had a 2.0 liter 6.

I've felt the same way. the 912 (minus the 1976 model) is just so much more affordable than a 911. Then mabye a little PCH with a late-model drivetrain swap... oh god.

These cars are rare since most of them were chopped up as spares for 911's. The last time I saw one anywhere was in DC about 20 years ago and it was the fake automatic version. Anyone remember the name of that transmission?
