The answer, of course, is "both". You'd have to be hittin' the pipe to want to tackle a challenge of that magnitude, but considering the potential outcome, it's a good deal, at least financially.

To the hardcore 1960s drag racing aficionado I can understand the appeal of this as it is (once was?) a truly special piece of history, but for me, I can't envision laying out that much money.

I wish the new Pontiac G8s were called Tempest.

As opposed to most NPoCP posts, this car has actually sold for the number in question. There were at least two people in the world willing to put up their hard earned and/or inherited dollars for it. Nice Price by a knockout.

Well, it's apparent that not EVERYONE lost their shorts in the stock market. $220K will buy a nice foreclosure these days!

    Welcome to Crack City!

Not even the trendiest Barrett-Jackson poseur would consider this, even a couple of years back--was that a Cuda or simliar monster that went for a quarter of a million? That one was mint, muscle cars were trendy at auction, and the economy was better then.

Hey, whoever bought that! I got a couple of special barn finds for you. Email me, dude!

@NovaloadMissesPolar: A 1-of-7 71 Hemi Cuda convertible is still more than $250K, and will stay there. It's the relatively common and boring stuff that will take a hit. A red stick convertible will still do well. A brown column shift sedan, not so much.

@Sloop_John_B: Randy Williams claimed his SD Wagon resto was $185K. If the buyer already has the unique pieces, the finished product will be in the neighborhood of $185K+$225K at auction, so he isn't taking a stupid risk that will be virtually worthless if he decides to cash out. He can get most of his money back, or more, any time he wants.

    Spend, in everlasting stacks,

and dedicate them all to me.

And I will give you history,

I'm here with what is left me.

You think that I don't even have a single driveline part.

    Only chassis numbers,

    Numbers are all I have,

    To take your heart away.

My frame of reference is the Wheeler Deeler circular at the supermarket checkout lane, where said group of parts would fetch $600.00.

But for the guy who combs the pages of Thoroughbred & Classic Cars, the price is high, but not quite in crack pipe territory.

On a side note, I have a related question: I'm knowledgeable when it comes to vintage road racing, but is there an equivalent in vintage drag racing?

I doubt this Tempest will turn a wheel in anger again, but it would be great to see.

I have read the Hemmings article about these cars, and once put back together they are million dollar cars. They have a very unique history, unique drive trains (remember, it has a trans-axle in the rear) and most of them were campaigned by high profile drag teams during the 60's.

If any of you have the time, please by all means read the article that Murilee has a link to. It is well worth the read.

Inevidebly, it'll fall into crack pipe territory. But if it had the original engine, and the clip could be purchased reasonably cheap, it'd be worth that much to save it from becoming another trailer queen.

If someone actually paid that price, it's clearly worth that much to someone. But not me. In fact half of what Barrett Jackson sells falls into crack pipe category for me.

Crackpipe. Although this is a unique and significant car, it does not present itself as such by any outward substantiation. I think the final price was driven up by a bidding war, and the dust settled, the winner probably was trying to figure out how to explain this to his wife.

@graverobber- My Yugo Nova!: I've got a feeling that whoever had over a quarter mil to throw at a rust bucket Pontiac will just buy his wife a nice big rock much clearer and shinier than any piece of crack. That will probably be all the explaination necessary.

71 bids or no, I get the feeling somebody's eBay rating is about to take a hit. As soon as the winning bidder's wife sees/hears about what's going on, she's going to jam the brakes on this crazy train.

@Elhigh: No, because eBay's new "make the buyers feel good" policy means that sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers any more. Flakes and deadbeats welcome!

@Murilee Martin: Isn't that dumb? The supposed reasoning behind it was to allow buyers the ability to leave feedback without the threat of retaliatory negative feedback. Couldn't that have been accomplished by blocking or even caching the seller feedback if and only if the buyer left negative feedback?

If the buyer leaves negative feedback, disable the feedback posting of the seller, or cache it until it can be determined whether it was in response to a feedback left.

It wold accomplish the same thing, but would still allow negative feedback for no contact/no payment, since a non paying bidder is unlikely to leave feedback for the seller.

Man, $226,521.63 is a lot of money. Especially considering the risk you run of getting convicted of murder in rural Alabama!
