The Perennial doesn't get the love it deserves.

I may just have to create this one in GTA. And make it capable of 200 MPH.

Looks like the Nova gasser I photographed for DOTSBE awhile ago. Murilee, when are you planning on posting those? Are you just behind like I am with my Stats homework?

We need a close-up of that rear gate. Is that a pushbutton to open it? That's about the only unusual feature on this paragon of simplicity.

Love the compact wagons of the mid 60s.

I'm seriously considering putting together a Falcon or ChevyII/Nova from this era more or less from scratch. I love my battleship, for it's battleship-ness, but there's something so right about the compacts from that era.

For some reason I've picked up the crazy idea of seeing what could be done with the smallest small-blocks. 283 SBC or 260 SBF + 500cfm 4V + 5-speed would probably be a nice mix of power and economy.

Clearly you all are approaching this from the wrong direction. The Moons aren't there for speed, he's a hypermiler. It's all about aerodynamics, my friends.

    (looks at garden shed profile)

    ...and every little bit helps.

BTW, to whoever said it - terminal velocity for a typical mass/volume/drag profile like this, it probably wouldn't go much faster than 170mph if you dropped it out of a bomber.

Clean, very clean. Wish it had the black plate, but everything else about that Chevy II is righteous.

The perfect car for our times. What do these weigh? 2800 lbs? Imagine this, with an ecotec, at $12k. Rick could afford to fly his private jet into the back of a bigger private jet.

@Feds: Good guess- 2725 to 2900 lbs, depending on engine and trim-level.

200 MPH Club, eh? I guess the streamlining benefits of moon discs have previously been underestimated.

And while the 283 is a great engine, there's not a single thing wrong with the straight-six. (Unless of course, you consider "It just won't die!" to be 'something wrong', that is.)

@Slantsick- 30 degrees off center: I'm wondering if Mr. Salt Flat could have slipped a few Webers onto the intake... that rig is just screaming 'sleeper' to me, and it'd be perfectly in line to leave the single exhaust setup as camo. Especially seeing as how I don't believe our intrepid reporter checked for a remote exhaust cutout.

@AmishJohn: I'm thinking whenever the driver pulls a lever inside, there is no exhaust behind the headers.

Y'know, some sort of ball-valve arrangement.

On a semi-related note, here's a Northstar with no exhaust for your listening pleasure.

What I'm most drawn to is the sparseness of the design. There's the touches aft of the headlights, and there's 'Chevrolet' on either end, and that's it. Just a handsome car and that was more than enough. I don't know if I like this better than some crazy Plymouth of the same time, though.

@voodoojoo: As I remember reading somewhere - probably in Populuxe - this was a reaction to the ostenatiousness of 1950's cars with the fins and the chrome and the pushbuttons and the sticker shock that came with it. Your typical bloated late-50s car was the SUV of its day as far as it being ridiculous.
