Does this thing predate the famous blue-and-orange Gulf Oil livery? I wish it had the cool paint job instead of plain ol' refrigerator white, but I'll make an exception here.

Pass. Hood opens the wrong way. Looks like a PITA to fix anything. Seriously, fiberglass? You have to be kidding. Like I am.

Ben, you get double secret bonus points for mentioning Dr. Dick Thompson, the racing dentist, who was frequently involved in quasi GM backed, road racing shenanagans in the 60's, including the Corvette Stingray prototype and Don Yenko's Corvair Yenko Stinger to name a few.

@vwminispeedster appreciates Stud Beefpile's in-depth report...: Depending on what the seller has to say, I might be buying a light-blue (see: pre-modification V8olvo) Volvo 244. It may very well be two-toned with orange and given a Swedish flag on its roof.

Man, just the names involved in the history of this car- Yenko, The Flying Dentist, Z06 - are awesome. I've never driven a C2, much less a Z06, but in my imagination, it'd be incredible.

This was when GM design was at its height, IMO. The cars from each division were distinct and eye-catching. The flagship of them all, the Corvette, was as good-looking as most things European. On the competition side, however, GM management perpetually dragged its heels when it came to racing. This forced racing-minded staff like Arkus-Duntov to clandestinely offer production packages like Z06 to select customers like Yenko and Thompson, as full-bore factory support was heavily frowned upon. This despite the racing activities of the likes of Ferrari and Jaguar--the companies that the Corvette ostensibly was targeting. That's why something like this car is so valuable--despite what you'd guess, there really aren't that many Corvettes from the '50s and '60s with pseudo-factory racing pedigree. Incidentally, today's Pratt and Miller effort is far and away the most successful Corvette-based competition in history, and they probably don't get the credit they deserve. (P&M is also the only team to win Le Mans and LeMons.)

I know a guy here in OKC that owns one of these early Z06 cars... He bought it in original, unmolested condition out of (I believe) Connecticut many years ago.

About four years ago, his 21-year-old son took it out for a joyride in the wee hours after drinking heavily, ran it upside a guardrail on I-35 north of town, and tore the entire driver's side off the car.

Daddy showed up with a trailer in tow, and they carted the car off before the cops showed up. As far as I know, the car is still sitting unrepaired in storage. As an addendum, daddy bought him a "much safer" blacked-out H1 (yes, H1) wagon for him to collect his other DUIs in.

@Krautwagen: If I were the father in question, instead of buying my son an H1 as a reward for wrecking my priceless Vette, I would disinherit the kid, report the incident to the authorities, then press charges for Grand Theft Auto and anything else prosecutors want to tack on. I know that sounds cold and all, but the kid's gotta learn somehow!
