That is a glorious throwback to a different time. It's every bit as Art Deco as the Chrysler building itself. Flippin beautiful.

Wow, that's a beautiful car...it would get attention even at a Woody car show. The Suburban was also built as a taxi and a limo.

In addition to this great car, there was a beautiful Kaiser Traveler at the event. The amazing variety of truly unique vehicles, the friendliness of the exhibitors, the real "car town" feel of the setting and the true enthusiasm of the organizers combine to make the Orphan Car Show my favorite event to attend all year.

@junkman: That Traveler was flippin' awesome, totally flawless and that old car smell was top notch. This was the only shot I got of it because I'm dumb and didn't circle back around:

That Kaiser Carabela from Argentina was super cool too.

Eventually a two-tone Manhattan will be mine.

Why does post-war fake wood look nicer than modern real wood?*

I look at cars like this, or from the '20s, and I wonder if people 60, 70, or 80 years from now will look back at anything we're producing today with the same amount of awe and amazement that we look on these cars with.

It's an impossible question to answer, because we are here now. I mean, what did people in 1947 think of this? It was a nice car? That might be it. Now we think it's art on wheels.

According to the description that you took a picture of, most of that wood is actually plastic or more properly Bakealite.

I'm suprised at the addition of shoulder belts. I guess the owner actually drives this beast.

One has to wonder if, back in the day, a vehicle like this would have the stereotyped drivers of today's minivans: boring families and morbidly overweight women (at least that's the stereotype where I live)

@underwear-ninja: In the late '40s, moving to the suburbs, raising kids and leading a predictable life was all anybody wanted. Boring was COOL.

Something to do with living through a depression, then sending all our boys off to get blown apart in the rubble of razed European towns...

Ahh, thanks Ben, that's what I needed after getting a little pissed off.

And... WHY don't we still have these available to us? Oh wait. That would be a Sportwagon today, and we don't have them because Americans won't buy them.

I'm seriously thinking of moving to Australia.

It's not that we won't buy them, we can't buy them. CAFE means no more big cars. They have to be classed as light trucks to keep the automakers from racking up mileage penalties. And Shazam, in a flash of legislation we get crappy Minivans instead.
