A Celebration Of Legendary Rental Cars: The 12 Hours Of Sebrings! |

But I think you should think about an all "theme" race as a prelude to each LeMons.
For example, if we're dealing in crappy rental cars, how about an all Alero race? An all Cavalier race? An all Cirrus race, etc. etc.

This is just some evil ploy to get me back posting here during the week isn't it..
(Wert & Gawker can still go screw themselves for putting murilee on part-time status only.. hear that... screw you Wert!)
Being as i'm a sebring afectionado (really, I started www.asog.net, still run it infact, yes it's a cult.. so what.) and that i know these platforms better that most,
1st & 2nd gen sebring coupes(dsm/mitsu variant) should be exluded, they're not horrible cars, not great, but not horrible, they would be easy to cheat with as you can swap in mitsu 3L engine, as well as lots of other aftermarket parts, being as they're basically an "eclipse limo". they can be made decent.. it wouldn't be fair to the other cars which ruining what could have been an ok nameplate.
The 1st gen vert, came with a 2.5L mitsu v6 engine and Chrysler a604 tranny..
2nd gen sebring vert got the 2.7L (crap shoot engine) and the A604 tranny (crap shoot tranny), unless you got the limited time only sebring GTC.. which had the 2.7 with a stick.. that's the sleeper.. finding one however isn't easy. it'd be the holy grail.
The sebring sedan well.. 2.7L engine and A604 tranny, except the newer ones which came with the 3.5L
Doesn't matter which one you get, they all run about a mid 17 1/4 mile.. they all corner about as well as a mid 80's caddy.. and the tranny is a big jack-in-the-box todo todo da da da da boom.
Lemme know when and where... dunno if i could make it out, but i'll sure as hell try to be there :), can't say i'd be able to participate, but i'd love to help Judge (breakfast scotch is an acceptible bribe)
Penalities.. get caught cheating, you get the celine dion cds loaded into the crap factory stereo, turned to 11, your seat gets covered in, well unknown rental debris.. and the judges get to perform various rental manouvers (neutral drops, reverse donuts, backing and driving into random stationary objects) until sastified that the car is "worthy of racing"..
Every 3 hours, each car should be required to pit.. made to perform a WOT neutral drop, before being let back out on the track.. in order to keep the true rental experience alive.

That'd be my choice for a junkyard turbo sleeper.

but then I would have to come up $1,000, and being a poor college student counts me out of that. Unless someone wants to sponsor me?

Of course I would have to stop every 20 laps to put oil in it. I bought it for 500 and totalled it once so its just about perfect for lemons work.

Just the compact 4 door sedan with a NA four cylinder automatic transmission restriction. I think that'd level the playing field as most of these cars were anemic before they started duty in rental fleets across this great land.
Though, I'm sure that enough of these cars rank into lemons territory already as a good number of examples of these cars can be found locally for under $1k.
94-96 Chevy Corsica
97-05 Chevy Malibu/Classic aka 97-98 Oldsmobile Cutlass
94 Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz
95-00 Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique
94-04 Pontiac Grand Am/Olds Achieva/Alero
94 Dodge Spirit/Plymouth Acclaim & variants
95-present Chrysler JA cars and all subsequent variants
94-00 Mitsubish Galant
94-00 Mazda 626
94-00 Nissan Altima

The Sebrings won't last 12 hours but you could have a lot of awards--most spectacular mechanical failure, most body damage, largest fireball.
And of course you wouldn't have to worry about a theme because they are already themed as Sebrings. Nuf said.

Monte Carlos, Grand Prixs, Impalas, Luminas, Camrys, Tauruses, Thunderbirds, Fusions, Chargers, Intrepids and the list goes on.
Most could be rented as well.

I'd like to see everything from the 50's dirttrackin boats to clapped out pseudo muscle all the way up to throwaway FWD mid-sizers.
Of course stock car themed paint jobs are mandatory.

I have a car I'd consider entering and the Irwindale Speedway has a nice oval... and it's close :)
To make it fun, I'd say limit competition to the 1980s and up.

If 4.6L equipped, well, you could turn some decent times.

If you ran a series with Cobalts it might just be too easy and mgiht even be-- dare I say, FUN?
03/28/09
In all, great idea. More LeMons spinoffs are what we need.
