I agree with everyone else, this does look very uh sporty and very awesome to be seen in. Ford and Chevy seem to be the only ones making an effort staying alive while Chrysler is just the child who doesnt listen to his parents.
It's getting to have a little-Falcon look to it that I really quite like. I understand it handles rather well for a midsize, too; sort of like a new Contour, except with leg room for people who haven't stepped on two landmines simultaneously.
Additionally, the taillights no longer suck. Party!
Hopefully the comparison tests will come out quickly...as long as this thing at least places among the perennial Accord/Passat winners, then it could be a nice swing in momentum for Ford. "A more exciting package than an Accord and more reliable marque than a Passat" would be a great spot to have.
It is genuinely an improvement, and the Fusion is becoming a handsome looking car. It still doesn't make me tingly in my naughty bits, but it's improving.
Now, let me see the updated MKZ that will be based on this. And let me see a goddamned powerplant and AWD installed into it. I mean a powerplant. It's a capable enough car to handle a bit of engine, give me something so I can actually desire it. As I said before. Tiny, high-revving V8 or turbo-six with 300+ horsepower, I'm happy.
Also. I would like to nominate myself, Mr. Ash, Mr. Science, and several of the Doctors who have ranted with us, to head down to Detwah to put on a seminar.
This seminar shall be entitled, "The Wagon: It Need Not Have Woodgrain Panelling, And How It Can Be Cool". We will put it on for all Three, and the closing argument will feature the Holden Commodore Sportwagon. All we need is Wert to foot the bill.
@nadnarb: You know, the only flaw there is they used a viscous-coupling AWD system, which means that it's pretty much always a FWD car, with up to (I think) 15% of the power available to the rear wheels after the fronts begin to slip. Your A4 quattro, if memory serves, uses a proper longitudinally-mounted Torsen AWD system that means you actually have a real drivetrain going to all four wheels.
@sbcncsu: Ditto. The domestics have all sent a pretty clear message that you have to go European (with commensurate expense and reliability) if you want a wagon.
I just want them to realize that wagons won't necessarily cannibalize crossover sales. I bet if they dug down a little deeper, they'd realize that the wagon market are mostly car people and that the CUV market are mostly (ex-)SUV people. I know I personally would not shop an Edge over a Fusion wagon--wouldn't even really consider it.
What is the impetus to put the manual mode on the right side of the car?
This doesn't make sense. The Mazda 6 has the manual mode on the left. Even the Camry has it on the left. Why must a person look like their flirting with the passenger if they want to use this technology?
@A strolling player, now with 100% more Studebaker!: The Altima, and that's about it. Pontiac did offer a stick shift on the G6 for a couple years, but I'm fairly sure those managed to sell in the negative numbers.
@A strolling player, now with 100% more Studebaker!: You mock (or, I think you do), but as someone who spends a lot of time driving at night, that would be a godsend. My cupholders are flip-down jobbies mounted on the side of the transmission hump. Trying to set down my coffee when I'm cruising down the highway can quickly become a five-minute process if I'm trying not to take my eyes off the road. I've commented many times that they needed to put a goddamned light in them.
It's a little tribute to us Highway Warriors, and I friggin' love it.
@Deartháir: Some automakers should hit up an ergonomics seminar at the local community college, or something. My cupholder is exactly where my hand rests on the centre console. Which is nice when I'm on the highway, or when I'm simultaneously drinking a bottle of water and pining for a manual. Not that... not that I do that. I just get bored sometimes, okay?!! DON'T JUDGE ME!
Full disclosure: Unnecessary interior lighting is probably my favourite thing in the world. My mom's CX-9 has a tiny little LED in the sunroof controls that bathes the entire console in blue light at night, and similar blue lights in the doors (I think they're only on the Grand Touring). Put your drink in a lit cupholder and watch the way the light dances around the light and the Sprite.

Chrysler's abysmal midsize offerings more than make up for it, though. *shudder*

I'll keep my current car for now--a manual V6. Very close and getting better with each new version!

The Infiniti G35 has it on the right, with upshift forward (this may have changed with last year's redesign, though).
The Mazda CX-9 has it on the left, with upshift backward.

Regardless: No manual V6? dammit, Ford. You were doing so well.
