We took a look at the nine-page talking points memo and found it unsurprisingly chock full of marketing-speak. Things like "world-class cupholders" and a "Reverse mohawk roof" prove to us that GM really put a lot of effort into the sales strategy here — just look how hard they're trying.

<![CDATA[ The Detroit News Opines On Renewed Pony Car Wars ]]> Our buddy Scott Burgess over at the Detroit News has taken on the rekindled problem of which ponycar now reigns supreme. With the Ford Mustang GT500 and its thousands of variations, the reborn Dodge Challenger (now in SRT8 flavor), and the recently unveiled Chevy Camaro all vying for eyes, there won't be enough Calvin-peeing-on-competitor decals to go around. Though the conclusion is left up in the air, Scott still provides an amusing simile while comparing the Ford to Chuck Norris with a Bowflex. [Detroit News]

<![CDATA[ The Ten Crappiest Cars Of The 2008 Monterey Auctions ]]> The Pebble Beach Concours is always a spectacle of the well-heeled celebrating the well-known in the fancy-pants car show circuit. To go along with the car show wine is the cheese, also known as the Monterey Auctions, put on every year by the house of RM Auctions. There are always hit lists of the most desirable and historical cars crossing the blocks for huge sums of money; to wit, Edmunds Inside Line just did their "10 Best Cars at the 2008 Monterey Auctions" piece today. But we tire of such endeavors. That's why we dug around and found out what's at the bottom of the list. Below the fold: The ten crappiest cars at the 2008 Monterey Auctions.

1) 1909 Peerless Model 19 Touring Car

Expected haul - $350,000-$450,000 1909_Peerless_Model_19_Touring_car.jpgCough, cough, sputter! WHAT! You want how much for a clapped-out Clampit-mobile? Sure, Peerless cars have their place in history, but anything that two-boxes harder than a Volvo 240 just ain't worth that kind of scratch in our opinion. Let's say you buy it, dump a bunch of cash in it, and now its gorgeous. Congrats, you now have a tall golf cart.

2) 1941 Willys Coupe Street Rod

Expected haul - $100,000-$140,000 1941_Willy_Coupe_Street_rod.jpgWe hate to say it, but we're so over the whole Willys hot rod thing. They've been done to death and no amount of flame paint job, big rear wing and monster engine is going to get us to part with that kind of cash.

3) 1951 Nash Rambler Custom Landau "Roll-Top" Convertible

Expected haul - $40,000-$80,000 1951_Nash_Rambler_Landau.jpgTake the original quality, reliability, and road manners of a Nash Rambler, chop the top off and create a Custom Landau "Roll-Top" Convertible, three synonymous terms for 'hole in the roof', and you've got a rattly mess we'd rather pass on. Sure, Ramblers are sort of the forgotten great American classics, but we're prefer one with a nice rust patina, Indian blanket upholstery and a stinky dog in the passenger seat.

4) 1967 Porsche 912 Soft Window Targa

Expected haul - $50,000-$70,000 1967_Porsch_912_Targa.jpgAll the quality of a Porsche, none of the looks. That was probably one of the lines shot down in the marketing meetings for this car. The 912 was always sort of a bridge car, neither 356 nor 911, and parts for the beast are as easy to find as a cold beer in Stuttgart. We'll take a look at the cars on either side of the 912 thank you.

5) 1957 Volkswagen Beetle

Expected haul - $8,000-$12,000 1957_VW-Beetle.jpgIt's a Beetle, rubbing shoulders with LaSalle and Talbot Lago. It's about as out of place in this auction as a teal donk at the Gumball 3000. Oh, don't get us wrong here, it's a very nice Beetle, but considering its peers, the sale of this puppy would have been better planned elsewhere.

6) 1974 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Race Car

Expected haul - $100,000-$135,000 1974_Chevy_Camaro_IROC_Racer.jpgForget the name on the side of this IROC Camaro, and think about owning a 1974 IROC Camaro. Can you feel the little hairs on the back of your neck growing at an incredible rate? So can we. Yeah, Bobby Unser drove it. That's nice, but you'd have to be a hardcore racing wacko to want to pony up this kind of dough for a 1974 Camaro.

7) 1974 De Tomaso Pantera L

Expected haul - $125,000-$150,000 1974_Detomaso_Pantera.jpgWe've always liked the faux-exoticness of the Pantera. It's a car with essentially as much refinement as a ten pound sledge hammer, and yet it's often compared in performance with Ferraris of the day. It's the shade-tree mechanic's supercar, with a 351 Cleveland Ford in the middle. It's an easy car to modify, but still, if that's what you're after, they can be had for a whole lot less than the asking price here.

8) 1958 GMC Series 101 Pickup

Expected haul - $75,000-$125,000 1958_GMC_Series-101.jpg$75,000-plus for a pickup truck? Um, no. Go to your local Auto Trader, flip to the "Collectibles and Classics" section, buy a GMC Series 101, paint it teal, save $60,000 or more and be just as happy with the truck.

9) 1966 Amphicar 770

Expected haul - $40,000-$60,000 1966_Amphicar_770.jpgBoth car and boat, and a master of neither discipline, the Amphicar is one of those much-loved but useless cars of yore. We're betting it heard the phrase "An answer to the question nobody asked" well before it was ever leveled against the likes of the Chevy Avalanche

10) 1959 Fiat Jolly 600

Expected haul - $50,000-$60,000 1959-Fiat-Jolly.jpgWhat has wicker seats, no roof, 21.5 horsepower and costs $50,000? Why, a Fiat Jolly of course. This micro machine is perhaps the only car more useless than a Peel Trident — hey, that's at least got a roof and the ability to fry eggs on your head at high noon.

So there you have it, our picks for the crappiest cars up for sale at this year's 2008 Monterey Auctions. We know some of you will think we're heretics for picking a few of these, but by and large these rides just don't cut the mustard when masterpieces like the 1938 Bugatti 57SC Atalante are on the same block. So what do you think? What's the crappiest car of this years auctions? Feel free to fight it out in the space below.

Post publish commentary: Since some of you seem to have checked your sense of humor at the door and consider everything a serious offense to the senses now, I'll go out of my way to make it clear the term "Crappy" is being used in the jocular sense. Perhaps I didn't lay it on thick enough, but the main beef is with the culture of auctioneering driving the prices up on relatively normal cars. I don't think these are crappy, but the multi-million-dollar classic car gold rush is forcing the prices up and the prestige down on otherwise neat, but normal cars.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro Convertible Spotted In Australia ]]> Following hot on the heels of the production 2010 Chevy Camaro coupe reveal, we get a good look at a 2010 Chevy Camaro convertible roaming the streets of Victoria, Australia. The lovely blue beast has us all reconsidering GM's direction on the car as it features the hood intake present on the Camaro concept, but nowhere to be seen on the production model. Is it possible we're looking at a Chevy Camaro SS Convertible?

That top looks pretty smooth to us, sacrificing little in the way of style and interior room. And dare we say it, it may actually have better lines than the hardtop. Also differing in the convertible, we see the wheels are of a different design, though obviously that means nothing on a mule car. In addition to a terrestrial antenna there's also a shark-fin antenna resting in the middle of the trunk lid for satellite and OnStar duties. So, a Camaro Convertible with a possible SS badge on the nose: A pony car convertible not just for teenage girls — what a concept. [WheelsMag via GM Inside News]

<![CDATA[ CNBC's "Saving General Motors" Is... Actually Quite Good ]]> Saving General Motors CNBCCNBC's gone inside GM for a one-hour documentary called "Saving General Motors," airing next Wednesday, August 6th at 9 PM and defying expectations, put together a rather compelling hour of television for the auto-obsessed. The documentary of course spends time on the bad, but also on success stories for the big 'merican automaker — the new Chevy Malibu, the new Chevy Silverado, the new Cadillac CTS and Buick in China as well as potential success stories like the new Chevy Camaro (and of course, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. taking the Camaro around the track — as well as some great behind-the-scenes footage of the making of Chevy's new hotness) and the Chevy Volt.

It'll also focus on profiling some of the General's big names — Rick Wagoner, Bob Lutz, Ed Welburn and of course, GM lifer and UAW hourly worker Warren Kennedy. Good ol' Warren. We've seen an advance copy of the show and it's an engaging watch for the automotive-obsessed. Highlights include CNBC car stud Phil LeBeau interviewing Bob Lutz at the GM Heritage Center and hearing him speak with candor about the craptastic quality issues of the previous generation of GM products. Oh, and we get to see Lutz in a flight suit. Hot! Want to see some clips? Hit CNBC's site and then check out the full show on Wednesday. [CNBC]

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro: From Concept To Reality ]]> The most striking feature of the unveil of the new Camaro was how strikingly similar the 2010 Chevy Camaro is to the Camaro Concept. We enlisted the help of GM designer Jeff Perkins, who worked extensively on the new muscle car, to help us with the magnifying glass and determine what those changes were. Hit the jump as Jeff guides us through sort of virtual walk-around, pointing out each of the individual tweaks and changes the designers made to bring the concept to production.

The New Camaro's Front

2010-Camaro-FrontTotal.jpg"Our philosophy from day one was [to capture] the essence and philosophy of the first-generation Camaro, but with modern execution and modern materials and modern fit-and-finish. From a design standpoint, we want the Camaro faithful to recognize and love it, but we also want to have a new generation love the car for the way it is, without a history lesson." — Perkins

The New Camaro's Rear

2010-Camaro-RearTotal.jpg"We call the shape "coke bottle" and the car has a lot of that coke bottle shape to it. You'll see this especially where the door intersects the rear quarter panel. And you can see how far the wheels go out in both the production car and concept car." — Perkins

The Camaro's Interior

2010-Camaro-InteriorTotal.jpg"The overall philosophy was to have this straightforward, wide sports car interior piece. We wanted to play up the deep-dish steering wheel and play up the gauges, while making sure the shifter is highlighted. It's about showcasing these components that we think are strong. The overall shape of the interior is really very similar to the concept. We did have changes for safety requirements; kneebags have to be in a certain zone and you have to get airbags in. When we showed the concept car the feedback we got was really strong and our word from Ed Welburn and Bob Lutz was that we need to do the concept car." — Perkins

Also, we highly suggest you check out Automobile Magazine's sit-down with Cheryl Pilcher, Camaro product manager. It's a good read.

<![CDATA[ Video: New Camaro Playing Sweet V8-Powered Music On Main Street ]]> No, you didn't read that wrong. Our sources tell us those idling sounds you hear in the above video received anonymously from one of our tipsters (who we're still waiting for an e-mail back from!) aren't coming from a plain-Jane direct-inject 3.6-liter V6 engine. Nope, apparently the new Chevy Camaro painted hot rod red shown to journalists in Metro Detroit last night had either the big 6.2-liter LS3 V8 and its whopping 422 HP. That's enough power to take the Camaro SS around Germany's famed Nurburgring with a time of 8:20. How do we know it was the LS3 and not the new Active Fuel Managed L99 V8 with the same displacement? Well, this particular Camaro's got a manual transmission. So yes friends, this is the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS — dressed up as a 2010 Chevy Camaro RS. Yeah baby, it's a sleeper! Nice. Also, see if you can spot Jalopnik's fearless leader for some bonus points.

<![CDATA[ Is the 2010 Camaro A Home Run, Strike Out Or Double Off-The-Wall? ]]> After yesterday's musclecargasm over the 2010 Chevy Camaro, it's probably a good time to take a deep breath and decide whether or not we like it. Your Jalopnik crew is torn between those that see the car's design as sharp and progressive, those of us who believes it's unnecessary retroism and one of us who thinks it wouldn't look good with 14" wire rims. There are those among us that see the car as a great performer for a new era, while others see it as safe replacement for a car they didn't particularly like in the first place. Does it rock? Does it suck? Does it both rock and suck?

GM clearly needs a win with the Camaro, which we feel like they've been developing for the last 4,000 years. Do they have a winner on their hands? Even if you don't like it, do you think it'll perform well in the market? Why do you think it'll perform well in the market when everyone wants a Honda Civic? Debate starting... now!

the car's steering angle, individual wheel speed, brake pressure, lateral
acceleration and yaw rate.
• The information is then used to compare the direction the
driver is steering with the vehicle's actual path, so the
system can make the necessary corrections to help the
driver keep the vehicle on path.
• and traction control standard on all models

Design details
With a design that is very faithful to the original concept, the 2010 Camaro is a 21 st century sports car that acknowledges its heritage. A long front dash-to-axle and short rear deck give the Camaro classic proportions, while a sleek windshield profile, wheels pushed to the corners and muscular fender forms are modern elements that reinforce its advanced engineering - and give the car a decidedly aggressive stance.
Elements such as a forward-V shape at the front of the car and "gills" in the rear quarter panels are distinctly Camaro cues, as are the broad rear fender "shoulders." Those elements make the new Camaro instantly recognizable, but their execution is smoothly integrated into the contemporary exterior form. A family of large, 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels also contributes to the Camaro's modern appearance.
"The new Camaro is just that - new," said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. "We acknowledge the nameplate's strong heritage in the design, but recognize that keeping this modern sports car relevant meant more than simply honoring a classic car. The line forms, stance and overall execution are consistent with other new Chevrolets."
A well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail also characterizes the Camaro's interior. A pair of deeply recessed instrument binnacles that feature round gauges in square housings is a nod to classic Camaros, while an available ambient light package offers advanced LED light pipe technology to give the cabin a distinctive and inviting glow. Cloth upholstery is standard; heated leather-appointed seats are available.
Details such as large, chrome-trimmed controls, low-gloss surfaces and premium fabric or acrylic appliqués convey a richness that is unprecedented in previous Camaro models - and challenge its contemporary competitors. More great detail is evidenced in the available center-console gauge cluster, which takes its cue from a similar option on 1969 Camaros. It displays oil temperature, oil pressure, state-of-battery and transmission fluid temperature, all highlighted with modern LED backlighting.
Powertrains
An advanced, efficient 3.6L direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing is standard on LS and LT models. Direct injection technology helps the engine deliver more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions. That means less fuel is consumed and lower emissions generated - including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions.
The Camaro's 3.6L engine also employs variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy across the rpm range. It is rated at an estimated 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.
The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Standard, manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, estimated at 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 408 lb.-ft. of torque (553 Nm). The LS3 debuted on the 2008 Corvette and uses high-flow cylinder heads based on the Corvette Z06's LS7 engine to enable great low-end torque and high-rpm power. It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.
A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3 and carries all of its high-performance design features, but also includes GM's fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It enables the engine to run on only four cylinders during light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising, to improve fuel economy. The V-8 is estimated at 400 horsepower (299 kW) and 395 lb.-ft. of torque (535 Nm); and it is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission. This combination delivers an estimated 23 mpg on the highway.
Body structure and chassis
The 2010 Camaro is built on GM's global rear-wheel-drive architecture, with a strong body structure that enhances safety, quietness and handling. World-class build quality and attention to detail are enabled by features including one-piece body side stampings and very precise tolerances between body panels.
Front and rear independent suspensions are mounted to the rigid chassis, including a multi-link strut arrangement in the front with a direct-acting stabilizer bar and a double ball-joint configuration; and a unique, 4.5-link rear suspension that is double-isolated from the chassis for smoother, quieter driving experience.
Camaro offers two suspensions. LS and LT models receive an FE2 (sport) suspension, while the SS receives the FE3 (performance) suspension, including a lower ride height. Each is tuned to match the performance capabilities of their respective powertrains, as are their wheel-and-tire combinations.
A variable-rate rack-and-pinion power steering system mounts the rack forward of the front axle, for more direct action, an enhanced feeling of driver feedback and better weight balance.
Brakes and chassis control
Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard on all models. LS and LT models receive single-piston calipers all around, with mass-reducing aluminum rear calipers. SS models have larger rotors that are acted upon by four-piston, aluminum Brembo calipers at all four corners. They are designed to stand up to the severe use encountered on road-race tracks, delivering excellent feedback and pedal feel, as well as fade-resistant performance during racing.
GM's StabilTrak electronic stability control system is standard and incorporates traction control. The system on SS models includes Competitive/Sport mode that is adjustable for performance driving, such as on a racetrack; it also includes a Launch Control feature on SS models with the manual transmission. It enables quicker, more consistent takeoffs during performance driving.
Safety
Designed to protect occupants before, during and after a crash, the Camaro offers a comprehensive system of safety features - starting with a robust body structure and integral safety cage around the passenger compartment. High-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel are used in key areas throughout the structure.
Safety technologies integrated in the Camaro include:
• Driver and front-passenger dual-stage air bags
• Dual-stage Air Bags —
• Dual-stage air bags are designed to inflate at high speed in serious crashes,
• but deploy with less force in minor-to-moderate crashes. The air bag system's
• sensors determined the severity of the crash, signaling the appropriate
• deployment speed.
• Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags
• Head curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear seat occupants
• Front seat safety belt load limiters and pre-tensioners
The front passenger detection system
Front Passenger Detection System —
To avert potential injury risk from high-pressure airbag inflation,
the front passenger detection system will suppress air bag
deployment if a child or person of small stature is sensed
sitting on the passenger seat. It also senses the presence
of a child restraint on the seat, and will suppress airbag
deployment accordingly.
The detection system uses a mat sensor embedded
in the passenger seat that establishes the occupant's
weight and weight distribution. If this is below a certain
level, the sensor alerts the SDM central control unit and
the front passenger airbag will not deploy.
senses children and small-stature adults and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.
Standard OnStar service assists after a crash. With OnStar's Advanced Crash Response System, the vehicle automatically sends a signal to OnStar for assistance, even if the air bags don't deploy.

<![CDATA[ First Driving Video Of The New Chevy Camaro! ]]> Well, first driving video of the production version of the 2010 Chevy Camaro, anyway. Sure, there's been two-and-a-half years of spy photos, videos and what have you, but here's B-Roll of the real deal. It goes like a nice Chianti with the leaked photos revealed on Friday, some fava beans and the live reveal you'll see here tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 PM. Sure, we wish there were some sounds of the new Chevy Camaro to go along with the video. Unfortunately, some silly site* we liberated this GM PR video from (its from an 800-lb consumer site with the inside line on how to get video from Chevy) decided to do a voice over instead of giving enthusiasts the chance to really here that Camaro purr. Bad consumer site, bad! Whatever. Anyway, hit the jump for our galleries on the new muscle car from the General.

*Many thanks to Edmunds Inside Line for not beating us into a pulp for using video given to them by GM!

<![CDATA[ The New Chevy Camaro In A Skittles-Like Rainbow Of Colors, What's Your Favorite? ]]> Although we've already seen the 2010 Chevy Camaro revealed in three colors, the crazy kids over at CarScoop have decided the new Chevy Camaro RS needs to be seen in more than just plain-Jane colors like red, yellow and silver. They've Photoshopped a veritable Skittles-like rainbow of colorgasmic flavors for the new Chevy Camaro. Check out the front ends over here, then head on over to CarScoop to check out the hot rear action. Although we''re partial to pink on the new mullet-mobile, what's your favorite flavor? Better question — anyone want to take a few moments in P-shop themselves to mock up what colors and decals you'd drop atop Chevy's new muscle car? We'll do a post showing off the best tomorrow afternoon before the official unveiling at 4:00 PM EST.

<![CDATA[ Dale Earnhardt Takes The New Camaro Sideways With CNBC On Secret Aussie Test Track ]]> While yesterday gave us our first look at the un-camouflaged new Chevy Camaro, who knew CNBC's Phil LeBeau had a scoop that'd put our blow-the-top-off coverage of Chevy's new muscle car to shame with the mullet-wearing demographic? He's got NASCAR star-of-stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ripping the new 2010 Chevy Camaro sideways through a secret test track somewhere in the Aussie outback in this new video over at CNBC. Though the 2010 Camaro is still wearing some serious body camo cladding, we're totally loving the screechingly good music coming from those rear tires. However, we'll try to ignore that "body roll" comment, because perhaps Dale just doesn't know that drive impressions are probably embargoed for sometime next year. Well, whatever. By the way, we've got a whole mess of new shots of the new Chevy Camaro RS below — now looking yellow, red and silver — so pick your color pleasure. [CNBC via Camaro5]

<![CDATA[ Production 2010 Chevy Camaro Revealed! ]]> This is it. The 2010 Chevy Camaro, revealed in all its glory. According to details we've been told by the folks breaking the embargo, the new Chevy Camaro will come in LS, LT and SS (yes, we know there's a badge there that says "RS")— and be available in either 6-speed manual or auto flavors. Under the hood, a 296 HP 3.6-liter V6 or a 416 HP 6.2-liter V8 with cylinder deactivation. And check out that interior — looks very muscular to us. Weight? How about 3,747 lb — lighter than the Challenger. Full details below the jump. UPDATE: Now we've got even more pictures!

Here's what we're told from the folks at CarTribe:

The Camaro will come in LS, LT and full-on SS specs and be available with 6-speed manual and auto transmissions. Under the bonnet sit fuel-efficient 296bhp 3.6-liter V6 and 416bhp 6.2-liter V8 engines, which can run on fewer cylinders to improve economy.

It shouldn't just be a burnout king either, handling should be pretty good thanks to an all-independent suspension setup and a StabiliTrak stability control system. 4-pot Brembo brakes front and rear shed the speed on the SS. Weight balance is split 52/48 front/rear too, but the Camaro is a porker, weighing in at more than 1,700kgs.

The interior gets cool LED lighting, leather seats on posher models and dials and gauges inspired by 1969 Camaros. The US gets the car in early 2009, while we'll get it some time after that. Super.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro SS To Star Alongside Christian Slater In New NBC Show ]]> Alright, so there's this guy, Harvey Spivey, who's an efficiency expert. He lives the typical suburban life: wife, two kids, dog, minivan, self hatred. Basically, he's the total opposite of Edward Albright, a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS driving, multilingual, lethal operative. But get this: they share the same body. Whoa.

If you're thinking this sounds like a great idea for a TV show, you're not alone. It's coming to NBC this fall starring Christian Slater. Knight Rider might have some competition.

Revealed also are some more closer-up details of the new Camaro SS than those we were able to discern from the shots we saw of this very same Camaro SS on set of the new show. <![CDATA[ Woman Drives 1970 Camaro Over One Million Miles, Thumbs Nose At Volvo ]]> Emma Ely bought her baby blue 1970 Chevy Camaro SS 350 38 years ago and has driven it daily ever since. As a result, she's racked up 1,104,000 miles on the odometer and counting — a number so high, the odo has rolled over to start at zero more than once.

The engine, transmission and rear end are all original and have never required major overhaul. The 72-year-old Ely chalks up the car's longevity to regular oil changes at 3,000 miles and careful attention to any maintenance issues. We chalk it up to a 1970 split bumper Camaro being driven by an old lady as being totally awesome. Check out the short interview at a CBS affiliate via the link below. (Hat tip to Michael!) <![CDATA[ Ten Greatest American Police Patrol Cars ]]> We're celebrating Independence Day with a week-long automotive Amerigasm heading down two diametrically opposite roads. The first, started yesterday, is a salute to the best car commercials — a celebration of the conspicuous over-consumption that made this nation great. The second road is one we'll be traveling at government-mandated speeds — a salute to the police car. While The Man may always be trying to keep us down, we salute him for having some killer vehicles with which to do it. You can take both roads this week here. —Ed.

We've compiled a list of the greatest American police cars in honor of our patriotic, week-long Independence Day celebration. Whether on the big screen or the rear-view mirror, the radio car is as much a part of the ubiquitous American landscape as the golden arches of McDonalds or the billboards offering "Color TV" to road-weary travelers. Though they represent different things to different people, and we don't always love the people inside, they're there and, in the true American spirit, the cars are usually big, fast and strong. Which is why we love them. Check them all out and vote for your favorite below the jump.

10. International Paddy Wagon (Baltimore)
TenPolice_IntlPaddyBM.jpgThough America may be the the country that nurtures the individual, we sure like to get arrested in groups. That's where the paddy wagon comes in handy. Part truck, part temporary jail, there have been a lot of them throughout the history of American law enforcement. This 1947 International wagon is a particularly beautiful example and a reminder of International's long commercial history in America. That cop is totally riding the wagon.

9. Chevy Bel Air Police Car (Texas)
TenPolice_ChevyBA.jpgNothing says U.S. of A. like a Chevy Bel Air. This Chevy had the size and power to meet the duties of a civil servant and the look to scare criminals into pulling over. Topped with a big red cherry, you'd know what to do when you saw one of these bad boys. This particular Texas-badged 1955 Chevy Bel-Air is a prime example of the timeless design [BillWindsor.com]

8. Border Patrol Dune Buggy (Arizona)
TenPolice_BorderBuggy.jpgSpecifically, a Desert Patrol Vehicle (DPV), these are some of the most extreme police vehicles used for active patrolling duty. Typically, a DPV is fitted with a VW engine capable of nearly 200 HP. These vehicles can travel up to 80 mph and generally encounter some of the roughest terrain in the country while enduring severe temperature conditions. These go fast in places that Border Patrol SUV's can't even reach.

7. Ford Fairlane
TenPolice_FordFair.jpgThe forerunner to the Crown Victoria, the Fairlane may look even better than the Chevy Bel, and its low cost meant that it would provide police services for a large part of the country. The Fairlane is particularly noted for its powerful big-block V8, popular with the authorities around the country. In black-and-white it is one of the more iconic police cars ever built. This Wilmington, DE "Bureau of Police" squad car is an exceptional example.

6. Chevy Camaro Z28 B4C
TenPolice_Z28_CHP.jpgThe Chevy Camaro BC4 was one of the fastest police cars ever used in the United States thanks to a simple formula: Take a stock Camaro and add a mix of the strongest parts from the Z28 and other racing packages, as well as the Chevy 350 V8. They were a particular favorite of the California Highway Patrol, which knows a thing or two about pursuits. As great as they are at high-speed chases, they're great for deterrence as well. Who would want to get put in the backseat of that thing? [Photo: Sattler.org]

5. Dodge Coronet 440 (California)
TenPolice_Dodge440.jpgThere were many great Mopar police cars throughout the years, but we've got a soft spot for the 1970 Dodge Coronets. Not only do they have the 440 Magnum V8, good for in excess of 400 horsepower, they also feature that killer squinting headlight design that looks mean head-on. Oh, and the one above was featured in the original Gone in 60 Seconds giving it almost as much movie cred as the Dodge Monaco.
[IMCDB]

4. Ford Mustang LX Highway Patrol Edition (Texas)
TenPolice_FordDPS.jpgThe original Mustang LX highway patrol car, a favorite of the Texas DPS, haunted our dreams with its sharp facade, red interior and 5.0-liter V8 power. Though the hatchback Mustang would, theoretically, have been useful, the DPS stuck with the notchback 'Stangs. Mustangs were used in the DPS fleet between 1983 and 1993, with the 1986 model, pictured, our personal favorite.

3. Dodge Charger Police Edition (Michigan)
TenPolice_DodgeChargerMI.jpgAs you can probably tell from Mark's glowing review of the Dodge Charger Police Edition, we're big fans. Just look at it. Probably more the successor to the Coronet than anything, especially with the recurrence of the angry headlights, the Hemi-powered Charger is gorgeous, features a stalk-based Autostick, and has great road manners. Numerous police officers lusted after the ride, which is the best kind of accolade. In Michigan State Police blue with a cherry on top, it's even better looking.

2. Dodge Diplomat/Fury Police Car(NYC)
TenPolice_DiplomatNYPD.jpgThe M-bodied Dodge Diplomat and its twin, the Plymouth Gran Fury, aren't here purely out of nostalgia. Look at them. It's hard to believe they were anything but cop cars. What they lacked in power relative to some of the Dodge fleet vehicles of the 1960's and early 1970's, they more than made up for in durability. You couldn't kill them if you tried. Most models featured the 318 V8, though a few pursuit models included a 360 four-barrel. Imagine any upset renegade cop from an 80's police movie kicking the quarter panel of one of these bad boys.
[LSE]

1. Ford Crown Victoria P71 Interceptor (Everywhere)
TenPolice_FordP71.jpgP71 Crown Victorias never die, they just become taxis. Due to the disappearance of American-made RWD V8 sedans for nearly a decade, the Ford Crown Victoria became more ubiquitous than any other police car we can think of in any era since the Model T, despite the occasional deadly fire. Powered by a modified version of the Ford 4.6-Liter SOHC V8, they'll practically run forever, thanks in part to the oil-to-coolant heat exchanger. Even with the introduction of the Charger Police Package and the occasional Impala police car, Ford still plans to carry about 80% of the police market. Is there anything that reminds anyone more of the long arm of the law than a P71 Interceptor sitting on the side of the road? We didn't think so.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro SS Badge Officially Revealed, Unofficially ]]>

There's been a whole mess of back n' forth over the front grille markings of the purported production 2010 Chevy Camaro SS photos we posted earlier today. There's been some sort of forum fan-boy Civil War going on at 5thGen.org and Camaro5 with some mullet-heads jumping on the "Z28" bandwagon and others steadfastly sticking to the "esh-esh" chrome story. Well, there have to be winners and losers in everything. So those of you who may have thought it was a "Z28" will be forced to shave their mullets and turn in their A-frame t-shirts. Because my forum friends, as you can see above, that grille definitely says "SS." Still, we're happy to see the forums come through with the win yet again. God we love those guys. [Camaro5, 5thGen]

Oh yeah, sorry — in all that Transformers Corvette concept and Z28 hubub, we forgot to show you these camera phone shots taken by a forum fan-boy over at Camaro5 of what's purportedly yet another shot of a pre-production 2010 Chevy Camaro SS. Jeez, all these Camaros with their bow ties — they all look alike. Wait a second — a bow tie? This isn't a pre-production car — it's a production car! The shooter supposedly caught it on the set of a TV show with Christian Slater. No idea what that's all about. But check out that picture below of the "SS" from the back — are those air holes for a shunt in the rear bumper? Is that a clear brakelight in the rear window? Nice. <![CDATA[ Transformers "Corvette Concept," "Z28" Bumblebee Get A Close-Up ]]> Last time we saw it from afar, but now we've got the first close-up shot of what we're now told is a Corvette concept shot on the set of the new Transformers 2 movie, Revenge of the Fallen. The latest shot, posted to the Motown Muscle forum, comes with some degree of reliability given it comes with two new shots of the "Bumblebee" version of the 2010 Chevy Camaro Z28. That's right, our e-mail tipster, who also posted the shots on the forum, claims not only that this is a 2010 (or 2012) Corvette concept, but also that this isn't the "SS" Camaro, it's the Z28. Whether this mean we'd not only get a "Super Sport" package, but also a "special performance package" via a Z28 check box remains to be seen. UPDATE: We've also been told it may just be a package we can order from the folks at Saleen. But, we digress — if we're to believe the poster, both vehicles are getting some sort of paint treatment as part of work they're undergoing at the hands of Chip Foose. How the producers of the new Transformers 2 movie got Foose to step away from his work on "Foosical: The Musical" we'll never know. Hit the jump for the Camaro shots and some of our own speculation.

2010-Chevy-Camaro-Z28-front.jpg
2010-Chevy-Camaro-Z28-rear.jpg

So we're starting to think GM's decided the auto show scene isn't where they're going to capture the next generation of car lovers. Instead, they're decided — why not take the show to the people by way of the silver screen?

Other than the Detroit show, how many other shows really draw the attention of the mainstream international media? So it kind of makes sense with the shows becoming places over-crowded with product and variant reveals and under-crowded with mass media. Why not reveal a concept for the first time at a place like the Detroit Auto Show — then reveal it a few months later for the "rest of the world" on the big screen. Sure, we're speculating here — but the idea itself may actually make some sense. Of course, this could just be some really evil Decepticon — but why sully the American Revolution by making a bad guy a Chevy concept? Just sayin'...

UPDATE 2: That front end really has a very distinctly distended fourth-gen Camaro vibe to it...old Camaro concept perhaps? Does Bumblebee go bad for a short time in the movie? Just some more speculation on my part.

According to Zacklur, the scene being filmed showed the yellow Camaro spinning out shortly before Isabel gets covered with "green goo," then storms off. Could this be Bumblebee trying to tell Shia something?

<![CDATA[ Video: Bumblebee Shows Off His Newish Camaro SS Nose ]]> It might be from a low-quality cameraphone, but here are the first images of the brand new 2010 Chevy Camaro SS-bodied Bumblebee from the upcoming Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen movie. In addition to the side shot we saw yesterday, this new shot gives us some full frontal muscle car action via a much improved look at Bumblebee's newish nose — which may very well be actual SS styling. And then there's the video — we can barely make out the sweet up-powered Camaro engine music. But the taste is all we need. More pictures below the jump.

<![CDATA[ Looks Like Bumblebee Gets An Upgrade To Chevy Camaro SS For Transformers 2 ]]> Update: We managed to snag some clearer pictures and video of the Bumblebee version of the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS. Caught hot on the set of Transformers 2, the next iteration of Bumblebee seems to have been augmented with a very snazzy, very different 2010 Chevy Camaro SS treatment than we've seen in the past. Could this be the first glimpse we get of the as-yet unseen version for the bow tie brand? We like to think yes, or it's just a piece of magic. As far as Bumblebee's new choice of wheels, we're a little disappointed, we always imagined giant, intergalactic transforming robots had better taste than that.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro Showing Off Best Shots Yet Of DI V6 Engine? ]]> You may have been thinking General Motors has timed their muscle car revival all wrong, what with the 2010 Chevy Camaro coming out just as gas hits $51 per gallon. But see that's just what they want — to make driving this car an indulgence. And why wouldn't it be? Especially as it now appears that although the V8-engined 2010 Camaro SS may be getting all the attention, the V6 is going to pack quite a punch as well. These new shots from the forum fan-boys looking beyond the F-body at Camaro5 give us the clearest look yet under the hood of the six-cylinder model. But this does not appear to be your grandpa's engine.

Look closely at the throttle-body size and shape and the bolts holding it on, the three fluid reservoirs in the same locations, all cues that this is indeed the glorious direct-injection V6. That means about 300 HP, the same sort of power Ford gets from the V8 Mustang GT. And look, they've even moved the battery out of the engine bay, likely mounting it in the trunk like the Pontiac G8. All in all it looks like just the thing for the indulgence-minded muscle car buyer.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Exclusive Production Pictures, Seriously ]]> We've all been champing at the bit to get another good look at the 2010 Chevy Camaro, which has been mostly uncovered already. But no one has real production shots like these, which are purported to be shots of them producing the 2010 Camaro from someone who got access to the production facility. Those look like Camaros to us. Come on, the robots can't keep their hands off of them. Thanks to J for passing them along

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Interior With Automatic Transmission, Shunt In Trunk ]]> Camaro-Interior.jpgWe've seen snaps of the interior on the 2010 Chevy Camaro before, but none as automatic transmission equipped as these. Camaro5 has got a series of some real nice up-close and personal images of the Camaro to be and things are looking pretty decent. We're still not real sure on the Playstation inspired controls under the head unit, but if GM is happy licensing designs from Sony we've got no problem with it. We guess we'll find out all the details for sure later this summer at the Woodward Dream Cruise if the rumors we've heard lately and the winks and nods we're hearing from GM PR are true. <![CDATA[ The New Chevy Camaro Can Make A Soundgasmic Video At The Nürburgring Too ]]> We know you've seen the 2010 Chevy Camaro plenty of times by now, but trust us, you haven't heard it quite like this. It must be the fanboys at Camaro5's response to Lexus trying to steal the spy video thunder with the LF-A video from earlier. Because thunder is exactly what the Camaro's big 'merican V8 sounds like as it races around the famed German track. The video is over six minutes of rumbling goodness, so you might want to let it load a bit before watching. Ooh, and look, a Pontiac G8 GXP was there too.
