<![CDATA[2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Announced As 2009 Green Car Of The Year]]> For all of you sitting on the edges of your seat waiting for the announcement of the 2009 Green Car of the Year awarded by Green Car Journal at the LA Auto Show, you'll be happy to know it went to the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. The Jetta TDI is a fuel economy monster registering 50 MPG returns while avoiding environmentally dubious battery packs and high gravity snobbishness. The other contestants (the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, the BMW 335d, Saturn Vue 2-Mode Hybrid, and Smart Fortwo) will now have to hang their headlights in shame. Press release below the jump.

VOLKSWAGEN’s JETTA TDI NAMED 2009 Green Car of the Year®

LOS ANGELES - Nov. 20, 2008 - Volkswagen’s milestone 2009 Jetta TDI has been named Green Car Journal’s 2009 Green Car of the Year®, besting competitors that included a pair of advanced hybrids, a clean diesel sport sedan, and a trendy fuel-efficient microcar. This is the first time that a clean diesel model has been awarded the title Green Car of the Year®. Green Car Journal has been unveiling the Green Car of the Year® winner at the LA Auto Show every year since it initiated the annual award in 2005.

“The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI epitomizes what the Green Car of the Year® honor is all about,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com. “It raises the bar significantly in environmental performance with its EPA estimated 41 mpg highway fuel economy, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and extremely low tailpipe emissions. This is all the more impressive when you consider the Jetta TDI is a clean diesel, achieving the kind of fuel efficiency offered by gasoline-electric hybrids but in a more affordable way.”

Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI features a 2.0-liter, turbocharged direct injection engine featuring the latest in diesel injection and emissions technology that allows it to meet strict emissions standards in all 50 states. Although its mission is to provide buyers a comfortable and fuel efficient five-passenger family sedan at an affordable $21,990, there’s a bit of performance in the bargain because of this clean diesel engine’s abundant low-end torque and the Jetta’s well-tuned suspension. This Volkswagen’s new-generation diesel powerplant is also exceptionally quiet for a diesel, reflecting just how far advanced diesel technology has come in recent years.

A jury of environmental and automotive experts selected the 2009 Jetta TDI from the field of five finalists that also included the BMW 335d, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid, and smart fortwo. This jury is comprised of nine jurors including Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club; Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council; Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society; automotive expert and Tonight Show host Jay Leno; automotive icon Carroll Shelby; and four Green Car Journal editors.

<![CDATA[2009 Porsche Cayman Comes To LA, Brings Optional Limited Slip Differential]]> The LA Auto Show has birthed it's latest automotive revelation in the form of the 2009 Porsche Cayman. The Cayman, as we saw a bit earlier, gets upgrades to both the entry 2.9 liter engine and the Cayman S 3.4 liter mill, a new twin-clutch transmission able to work power conversion magic and maybe most importantly, an optional limited slip differential has been added, addressing one of the most common complaints of the original Cayman. The new LSD will further improve performance on the back roads and the tracks. We suspect this news will set the less skilled 911 owners shaking in their boots. Complete details, restrained potential, and further images below.

Next generation Porsche Cayman with increased power and efficiency

Porsche is presenting the second generation of the mid-engined Cayman sports coupe at the Los Angeles Motor Show (November 21 – 30) this week. The highlight is the new, flat-six ‘boxer’ engines, developed to incorporate new technical features from the ground up, providing not only more power, but also significantly greater fuel efficiency.

A further improvement of both fuel economy and performance is guaranteed by the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), the new double-clutch gearbox now available as an option on both the Cayman and Cayman S.

Newly-developed’ boxer’ engines deliver more power on less fuel
The Cayman now has an engine displacing 2.9-litres, which develops 265 bhp (195 kW), an increase by 20 horsepower over the prior 2.7-litre model.

The 3.4-litre power unit in the Cayman S now features Direct Fuel Injection, and delivers 320 bhp (235 kW), up by 25 bhp.

These developments see the engines fitted to the Cayman and Cayman S coupes offering more horsepower than those in the Boxster roadster. This move emphasises the sports driving orientation of the Cayman and further differentiates the coupe.

An outstanding power-to-weight ratio of 4.2kg/bhp on the Cayman S in particular ensures optimum driving dynamics. For example, the Cayman S with PDK and Launch Control (featured in the optional Sports Chrono Package Plus) accelerates from 0-62mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds, setting the benchmark in the range.

When combined with the PDK transmission, the new 2.9-litre engine of the Cayman clearly breaks through the 30.0mpg fuel consumption boundary. Indeed, the figure of 31.0mpg (9.1 litres/100km) is approximately 10 per cent better than the previous model with the Tiptronic S automatic transmission. Increasing fuel economy by an even more significant 15 per cent to 30.1mpg (9.4 litres/100km), the 3.4-litre Cayman S with PDK offers an even greater saving over its predecessor with Tiptronic S.

In parallel with the improvement in fuel economy, so emissions of the engines have decreased also. Depending on model, emissions have been reduced by up to 16 per cent. The Cayman with the standard six-speed manual gearbox emits 221g/km CO2, and 214g/km CO2 when fitted with PDK. The Cayman S manual emits 223g/km CO2, and 221g/km CO2 with PDK.

Significantly, these developments move every Cayman model – whether manual or PDK – into Band F for Vehicle Excise Duty and company car taxation purposes.

Direct Fuel Injection standard on 3.4-litre S engine
The driver benefits from a further advantage of direct injection every time they touch the throttle pedal: with fuel being injected fractions of a second prior to combustion, the engine responds more directly and spontaneously to even the slightest movement of the driver’s right foot. This is not only the case when accelerating, but also when lifting off the throttle, for engine speed drops more quickly and smoothly since there is no residual fuel left in the intake manifold which might otherwise prolong the combustion process.

Depending on engine load and speed, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber at a pressure of 120 bar. The big advantage is that unlike conventional intake manifold injection, direct fuel injection serves to form the fuel/air mixture directly in the combustion chamber. This better mixes the air and fuel in the cylinder, establishing an important prerequisite for clean and complete combustion. This ensures the ‘homogeneous’ operation of the power unit with a consistent balance of the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber at all times and under all running conditions. Such smooth operation guarantees optimum combustion and maintains low emissions, across a range of fuel qualities.

A coupé of distinction
While instantly recognisable as a Porsche sports car, the Cayman is individual in its design. Originally launched in 2005, the characteristic silhouette of the Cayman has remained fresh and contemporary. Its distinctive coupé lines are combined with a long wheelbase and a rear aspect that slopes gently downwards. From the rear, the Cayman is defined by a large, opening rear lid, powerfully sweeping wheel arches and an automatically extending spoiler.

The rear lid opens upwards to provide access to the 260 litre luggage compartment. This, in conjunction with the 150 litre capacity luggage compartment in the nose, plus numerous additional storage compartments, ensures that this two-seater sports car combines real functionality with elegant aesthetic form.

As is Porsche tradition, the styling of the next generation two-seater Coupe has evolved subtly. However, it is clearly distinguishable from outside through its newly-designed nose and tail. The new halogen headlights with their integrated direction indicators are reminiscent of the lights on the Carrera GT, and the new LED rear lights tapering to the outside are integrated elegantly in the remodelled bodywork.

The rod-shaped side lights in LED light conductor technology add distinction to the car’s looks, which are further enhanced through their horizontal arrangement in the outer air intakes. Yet a further highlight is provided by the round fog lamps featured as standard.

For the first time the Cayman is available with a Lights Package featuring bi-xenon headlights, dynamic cornering lights and LED day-time driving lights. Replacing the fog lamps, these light units are made up of four LEDs arranged in round light units like the eyes on dice.

PDK: quickly shifting gears, reducing fuel consumption
The Cayman is available with the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) carried over directly from motor sport, and replacing the former Tiptronic S torque converter automatic transmission. When equipped with PDK, the Cayman accelerates from 0-62 mph (100km/h) 0.1 seconds faster than with the manual six-speed gearbox.

Acceleration is particularly fast and dynamic with the optional Sports Chrono Package Plus featuring Launch Control; this offers maximum acceleration from a standing start and also a Race Track Gearshift Strategy for the fastest conceivable gear change as an exclusive highlight on the PDK models.

Benefiting from Launch Control, the respective models accelerate from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) yet another 2/10ths of a second faster.

Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) – in detail
The next generation Cayman and Cayman S are available for the first time with the new Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), literally Porsche double-clutch gearbox. Offering no less than seven forward gears, the new gearbox combines the driving comfort of a torque converter-equipped automatic transmission with the dynamic manual gearshift functionality of a sequential racing gearbox. PDK also boasts an entirely automatic gearshift function, and replaces the Porsche Tiptronic S automatic transmission previously offered. Through its optimised and adaptive gearshift programmes, PDK further improves the acceleration of the Cayman models and reduces fuel consumption to an even lower level.

In principle, the PDK consists of a conventional manual gearbox and a hydraulic control system divided into two separate transmission units. Two wet clutches in radial arrangement, controlled hydraulically, and using oil for both cooling and lubrication, form the heart of the transmission. One clutch is for the first transmission unit with the uneven gear ratios (1,3,5,7) and reverse, and the other clutch is for the second transmission unit with the even gears (2,4,6). Via a number of pressure valves, the hydraulic control unit masterminds both the wet clutches and the shift cylinders activating the transmission ratio required.

The gearshift perceived by the driver comes not from the gears actually changing, but from the change of positive clutch engagement. In this case, the clutch on one transmission opens or disengages while the clutch on the other transmission closes or engages in a simultaneous process. The big advantage is an even faster gearshift than with a conventional manual gearbox or torque converter automatic transmission. The gears are already ‘in mesh’ when shifting and the power of the engine need not be interrupted in the process.

PDK also reduces to a minimum transmission power loss courtesy of the high standard of mechanical efficiency in the double-clutch, and this manifests itself in fuel economy improvements of approximately 13 per cent compared with a conventional Tiptronic S transmission. PDK also offers an advantage in terms of weight – despite two additional gears, it weighs 10kg less than Tiptronic S.

To use the various functions of the double-clutch transmission, the driver can either shift gears by means of sliding buttons on the spokes of the new steering wheel, or via the new gear selector lever. The driver can press forwards to shift the gears up, and press them from behind to shift downwards. Alternatively, pushing the gear selector lever forwards shifts up a gear, and pulling it back shifts down. The option of PDK costs £1,961.

This PDK gearshift principle was first developed by Porsche for motor sport 25 years ago. Porsche works drivers benefiting from this technology were able to accelerate faster than their competitors and keep both hands on the steering wheel while changing gears, thus avoiding even the slightest distraction while shifting.

The seven-speed PDK shifts gears up to 60 per cent faster than a conventional automatic transmission, and naturally, gives the new Cayman models even better performance. And those in search of optimum driving dynamics have the option to combine PDK with Sport Chrono Package Plus, now featuring Launch Control.

Dynamic suspension and supreme brakes – new option of limited-slip differential
The suspension with its new set-up gives the new Cayman models a combination of even greater driving dynamics and enhanced comfort all in one. Modification of the valve control map on the steering gear serves furthermore to reduce steering forces, giving the Cayman more agile and spontaneous steering behaviour.

The wheels come in new designs and are half an inch wider than previously on the Cayman 2.9-litre model in order to accommodate the larger brake system of the S-models which are now fitted on the front axle. The Cayman and Cayman S feature the latest generation Porsche Stability Management (PSM) which now offers two new functions: Brake Pre-Loading and the Brake Assistant. Whenever the driver lifts off the throttle pedal very quickly – which is typical immediately prior to an emergency braking manoeuvre – the PSM hydraulic control unit builds up an appropriate level of pressure in the brakes before the driver even presses the brake pedal down, which has the effect of moving the brake pads slightly towards the discs, and ready for immediate action. This significantly improves brake response and shortens stopping distances accordingly.

When recognising that the driver is braking in an emergency due to the very fast operation of the brake pedal and a defined brake force, the PSM hydraulic control unit actively delivers the brake pressure required for maximum stopping power.

In conjunction with 18- and 19-inch wheels, the new models in the Cayman range are also available with a limited-slip differential on the rear axle. Locking action is 22 per cent under power and 27 per cent in overrun. This significantly improves both traction and stability, providing a substantially higher level of performance on winding roads, particularly on the race track. A further advantage is the more stable load change behaviour. At the same time, the mechanical differential, through its particular function, interacts perfectly with the electronic Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) for optimum traction control, the locking action delaying the tendency of one wheel to spin on a road surface slippery only on one side.

New audio and communication systems
The next generation Cayman features as standard the new CDR-30 CD radio. The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) 3.0 complete with hard disc navigation is available as an option and when specified serves as the central control unit for all audio, communication and navigation features.

PCM 3.0 is more versatile, efficient and easier to use than before, standing out in particular through its touch-screen which enables the driver to select specific functions simply by pressing the appropriate key on the larger 6.5-inch monitor. PCM 3.0 is available with highly convenient voice control and, in conjunction with the optional, universal audio interface, can now be used also to control external audio sources such as an iPod®, USB stick, or Bluetooth.

Seat ventilation combined with seat heating is also available as an option.

The next generation Porsche Cayman goes on sale in the UK and Ireland from February 21 2009. The Cayman is priced from £36,870 and the Cayman S priced from £45,050. Customers will also be able to explore the dynamic attributes of their car, and develop their own skills behind the wheel, courtesy of a Driving Experience Programme at the new Porsche Driving Experience Centre at Silverstone.

<![CDATA[2010 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h Push Bland to New Heights]]> Lexus unleashed its 2010 RX 350 and RX 450h to a deafening roar of yawns produced by disaffected onlookers at today's LA Auto Show. Toyota managed to take a boring but tidy SUV and crank the snooze up to 11. The redeeming quality lies in the drivetrains of these suburban shuttles - 275 HP and 295 HP, respectively. The RX 350's 3.5 liter is backed by a traditional 6-speed automatic while the RX 450h's 3.5 liter hybrid powerplant is dancing partners with an electronically controlled CVT. Complete press release below.

Check out more on the Lexus RX350 and RX450h hybrid from CarandDriver.com

November 19, 2008 - Los Angeles, CA - Lexus unveiled the all-new, next generation RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid at a press conference today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicle that pioneered the car-based luxury utility vehicle segment when it launched in 1998, is completely redesigned and will continue to set new benchmarks in areas that have made it the best-selling luxury utility vehicle: innovation, styling, performance, utility and comfort.

At the heart of the new RX models are two improved powertrains. Entering its second generation, the RX 450h will feature an enhanced Lexus Hybrid Drive system with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine that runs on a highly efficient Atkinson cycle. Combined with a new, more efficient inverter, the total system output will be 295 horsepower, 27 more horsepower than the current generation RX hybrid.

Another step in the Lexus Hybrid Drive's evolution is the addition of two new systems that improve its efficiency. The first is an exhaust-heat recovery system that reduces engine warm-up time allowing it to stop earlier, more often, and for longer periods. The result is an improvement in both fuel economy and emissions. The second is a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system that reduces engine pumping losses, which also helps to improve economy.

The RX 450h features a front-wheel hybrid drive or an electronically driven, part-time all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drive system, which supplies the rear wheels with the optimal amount of torque as conditions demand. Unlike mechanical AWD systems that reduce fuel efficiency via added weight and friction, the RX 450h's rear-mounted electric motor-generator allows all four wheels to perform regenerative braking, charging the hybrid battery more effectively.

The third generation RX 350 will be powered by an improved 275-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to an electrically controlled, sequential-shift six-speed transaxle. The all-wheel-drive version will feature an Active Torque Control AWD system that optimizes torque depending on driving conditions, resulting in improved efficiency and performance.

Both RX models feature a new, uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension that helps provide exceptional agility and control. Its distinctive design also allows for five percent more cargo volume and easier loading. To complement the new rear suspension and provide excellent dexterity and ride comfort, the front McPherson strut geometry was optimized.

The all-new RX models possess a number of Lexus-first technologies that enhance the ownership experience. An available Hard Disk Drive (HDD) navigation system has an all-new "Remote Touch" controller that is both intuitive and ergonomic. Positioned on the center console, Remote Touch is as natural to the driver's hand as a computer mouse. It can also be customized to the desired level of haptic feedback. While RX will feature voice recognition as standard, the new navigation system will also include a new casual language voice-recognition system that acknowledges conversational commands. Standard XM® satellite-radio capability (requires subscription) is joined by XM NavTraffic and new NavWeather features.

The spacious five-passenger interior includes a new, thoughtfully constructed "dual-zone cockpit" design. This intuitive layout helps the driver navigate the advanced interior of the new RX, which features two distinct yet integrated zones: a "display zone" and an "operation zone."

The "display zone" assists the driver via an eight-inch, navigation display that is set back in the dash for improved visibility. A white Organic LED multi-informational display ensures exceptional readability from a wide angle. An optional Heads-up Display reduces the need for excessive eye movement, and the use of high-intensity LEDs make the display bright enough to be read in direct sunlight.
The "operation zone" provides access and control to a large range of information through the available "Remote Touch" navigation controller and the steering-wheel-mounted multi-information switch.

The exterior of the all-new RX has a strong stance and powerful new body design with the goal of enhancing comfort and maneuverability. The inverted-trapezoid design in the front and the horizontally integrated rear are incorporated together via a pronounced shoulder along the RX's profile. Stylish molding around the side windows and at the base of the doors provides low-profile strength. Standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels complement the exterior with a strong, sporty look, with optional 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels providing another styling cue. While it has increased in nearly every dimension, overall aerodynamic advancement was aided by a specially designed undertray, resulting in a segment-topping 0.32 coefficient of drag (Cd).

The RX 450h hybrid will have its own unique styling features, including an exclusive grille, hybrid badging including blue-trimmed Lexus logos, unique front bumper, a special 19-inch optional wheel design, blue-tinted headlamps and taillamps, and optional LED headlamps.

The new RX is available with a selection of luxury and sport option packages, which include features like Lexus' exclusive Mark Levinson® Surround Sound system, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, dynamic radar cruise control, and a Sports Package featuring a sport-tuned suspension.

The all-new RX will offer a wide-angle side view monitor. With a camera located under the passenger side-view mirror, the driver can check hard-to-view areas on the passenger side of the vehicle by simply selecting a button on the navigation screen or the steering wheel and view the camera image on the navigation screen.

True to its heritage, the RX's active and passive safety systems continue to be among the vehicle's most impressive features. Lexus' available Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) seamlessly integrates individual systems like Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Hill Assist Control (HAC) and Traction Control (TRAC). It operates in a smooth proactive way via throttle, steering and braking to help prevent skids while cornering before the vehicle reaches its operating limits on slippery roads or other challenging conditions.

The available Pre-Collision System (PCS) relies on millimeter-wave radar technology to recognize a possible frontal collision and primes the brake assist and retracts the driver's and front passenger's seat-belt in anticipation of the crash. An intelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) is available with HID low- and high-beam headlamps on both models, while the RX 450h also offers the AFS with LED low-beam and Halogen high-beam headlamps. Both anticipate the vehicle's location based on vehicle speed and steering angle, swiveling the front headlamps into the turn. An optional new automatic high-beam system detects light from oncoming vehicles, preceding vehicles or ambient sources and automatically switches from high to low beams.

Passive safety features include a class-leading 10 standard airbags on the new RX, including dual-stage driver and front-passenger airbags (including the Lexus exclusive twin-chamber front-passenger airbag), driver and front-passenger knee airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side airbags, and side-curtain airbags. It is also equipped with Lexus' front-seat active headrests, designed to help reduce a possible whiplash injury when in certain lower speed collisions from the rear.

The all-new 2010 RX 350 will go on sale next February, while the 2010 RX 450h will reach dealerships nationwide in the spring.

The Fusions two upmarket friends split the hairs of luxury with the Milan going after the Euro-snob luxury buyer who can't afford a Euro-snob nameplate while the Lincoln chases the McCainiacs who want something smaller to replace their 1989 Lincoln Towncars. While both good cars on their own we have to question the wisdom of two cars chasing the luxury market.

It's funny, we're pretty excited about the new Fusion, but these two cars offer much the same package and yet we're apt to give them both a "meh" (look it up in the Collins English Dictionary, it's a real word now). Where the Fusion provides a perfect example of an American car done right, the Milan and the MKZ are perfect examples of one luxury car that could be great but is split in two to satisfy the dealers.

<![CDATA[Volkswagen Touareg V12 TDI Baja Racer]]> VW launched into another class of Baja today as it released it's Touareg Baja Racer at the LA Auto Show. Racing along the same 630 miles of desert peninsula as the ever popular Baja Bug class, this Trophy Truck packs a 542 HP 5.5 liter V12 turbodiesel powerhouse motivating only the rear wheels to kick up some thick, dusty awesome. A tubular chassis only retains the visual dimensions of a Touareg - It's actually 10% larger than the production model. Full press release below the jump.

The answer: the Volkswagen Baja Race Touareg with a V12 TDI engine

The surprising success achieved with the "Dakar" Touareg sparked an ambitious programme by Volkswagen of America specifically geared to the Baja rallies. In close collaboration with the team of Mark Miller and Ryan Arciero an innovative prototype for the Trophy Truck class was created. For the first time, an automobile manufacturer dares to tackle this class with diesel technology. The rear-wheel driven Baja Touareg TDI’s power of more than 550 PS is supplied by a 5.5-litre V12 diesel engine from the Volkswagen Group. The efficient and fuel-saving TDI engine, together with a gearbox operated by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, promises to develop its power in a clearly better, and thus tyre-saving, way than spark-injection engines do. Whereas the fuel tank capacity of the petrol-powered vehicles is unlimited and typically designed to handle 120 to 130 gallons, the diesel vehicles must settle for 65 U.S. gallons (246 litres).

The chassis, with a tubular frame and a rigid rear axle with an enormous suspension travel of 75 centimetres, follows the typical principles of Trophy Trucks. The Baja Touareg TDI is prepared and fielded by Arciero-Miller-Racing in the USA; the engine is prepared in Germany. Visually, the Baja Touareg TDI will resemble the production vehicle. However, in all of its proportions the prototype is slightly ten per cent bigger than its production role model; it is practically an XL-sized Touareg.

Mark Miller and Ryan Arciero are two proven experts in the cockpit. Both have won several Baja 1000 and Baja 500 competitions as well as off-road titles in the USA. 46-year-old Mark Miller from Phoenix / Arizona is navigated by 34-year-old Willie Valdez jr. from Los Angeles. Ryan Arciero hails from Los Angeles and is 35 years old. He comes from a family that has been active in racing for over 50 years and for whose teams the likes of Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Michael Andretti and other well-known names have driven. Arciero’s co-driver is 32-year-old Benny Metcalf jr. from San Clemente/California. The decision about the time and place for the driver change will be taken after the track inspection and strategy planning.

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen and Clark Campbell, Motorsport Manager of Volkswagen of America, agree about the objective," At the Volkswagen Touareg TDI’s maiden race we want to master the route of the Baja 1000 and reach the finish. At such a tough and unusual event this would be a first success and a promising starting base for the first full off-road season in 2009."

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda3 Sedan Smiles For The Cameras]]> Mazda's pint-sized, entry-level 2010 Mazda3 Sedan was just revealed at the 2008 LA Auto Show and if nothing else, it certainly is expressive. The new sheetmetal is complemented by more power, a new six speed manual transmission and a rather nice interior for the segment, heck for any segment. The new Mazda3 stands to shake up the compact car segment currently occupied by such excitement-machines like the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, and Ford Focus — success is virtually guaranteed.

With the new Mazda3, Mazda is building on a story of success from the original Mazda3 which is the car's highest selling product in the lineup. If that tradition continues, and why else would they call it tradition if it doesn't, that means this slick new 3 will be paying for fun new stuff like a replacement RX-7. Did you hear that Mazda? Build a new RX-7. Do it, you know you want to.

<![CDATA[2010 Ford Fusion, Sport, Hybrid Revealed Live]]> We gave you all the details on the 2010 Ford Fusion, Fusion Sport, and 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at the break of day and now we've got the live reveal from the floor of the LA Auto Show. The trio of Fusionistas made their debut moments ago to bombastic loads of PR praise. If the improvements Ford is touting stand up to scrutiny, the Fusion stands to make some serious waves in the C/D sedan segment. We approve pretty solidly of the styling changes, the six speed manual and auto on the regular Fusion and the well thought out hybrid system on the twin powered model.

All this brings us to a point that has to be made. We can't assume the car performs up to snuff yet, but we'll cross that bridge when it comes. Assuming it does perform, cars like this are a loud middle finger to everyone who doubts Americans can build desirable, competitive, fun cars. If the American public doesn't respond to efforts like this, they deserve to drive the soulless appliances they seem to prefer these days.

<![CDATA[2009 BMW 7-Series, ActiveHybrid Hit LA Show Floor]]> BMW rolled out the red carpet for the debut of the new 2009 BMW 7-Series and BMW Concept 7-Series ActiveHybrid, both driving across the carpet under power of BMW's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. The difference is while the 2009 7-Series moved with the force of 400 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, the 7-Series ActiveHybid had an additional 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque on tap thanks to the addition of an electric motor. The former will go on sale early next year while the latter is but a concept, though one we believe is close to the design of a future BMW hybrid. Press releases and live photos below.

Check out more on the BMW 7-Series from CarandDriver.com

BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid: The BMW of hybrids
As an integral part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid previews the potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a luxury sedan. In typical BMW fashion, this new concept car combines a significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions with a level of driving dynamics never seen before even in this class of hybrid cars.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is an intelligent symbiosis of BMW's new twin-turbo V8 engine and electric drive as a mild hybrid concept. A compact electric motor, integrated into the transmission housing, replaces the conventional alternator as well as the starter. Power to run all electrics on-board the car is generated by means of Brake Energy Regeneration. The combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor take the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8's already potent 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque and supplies an additional 20 horsepower and up to 155 lb-ft of torque as needed. The drivetrain technology featured in the concept car allows enhanced driving dynamics together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent in the EU test cycle compared to the same car running on a combustion engine alone. At the same time the use of BMW ActiveHybrid technology does not require any compromises in driving qualities and features of the BMW 7 Series.

Energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery housed in the luggage compartment. An Auto Start Stop function helps to ensure optimum efficiency in all driving situations.

The hybrid technology showcased in the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is perfectly suited to the new benchmark in the full-sized performance luxury sedan segment just as the two-mode hybrid technology used in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, also on display in Los Angeles, is well matched to the world's first Sports Activity Coupe.

BMW 7 Series again sets the benchmark
The all-new fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series radiates a natural presence, inherent sportiness and an elegance born of precision in concept and execution. A new V-8 engine with direct injection and twin turbochargers expresses BMW EfficientDynamics at the highest level of performance. <![CDATA[All-Electric MINI E Hits LA Auto Show Floor With "Hottest. Deputy Mayor. Ever."]]> The all-electric MINI E was just revealed live here at the LA Auto Show. Although we already knew it had an expensive lease and we already knew all the details about its two seats (instead of the normal MINI 2+2), 204 HP and 162 lb-ft electric motor and performance of 150 mile round trip and 0-to-60 runs of 8.5 seconds. However, if you weren't aware of all those goodies there's a press release below the fold for you. What we didn't know is that Los Angeles had a Deputy Mayor that's what Wert's calling a "Palin-like hottie" and the "Hottest. Deputy Mayor. Ever." We're betting the boss-man is having a hard time separating his twin loves of politics and cars at this exact moment.

Check out more on the Mini E from CarandDriver.com

MINI AT THE 2008 LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW. THE MINI E.
A new Experience - Driving Pleasure Without Emissions: The MINI E.

MINI E - Technical Specifications.

The BMW Group will be the world's first manufacturer of premium automobiles to deploy a fleet of some 500 all-electric vehicles for private use in daily traffic. The MINI E will be powered by a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor fed by a high-performance rechargeable lithium-ion battery, transferring its power to the front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox nearly without a sound and entirely free of emissions. Specially engineered for automobile use, the battery technology will have a range of more than 250 kilometers, or 156 miles. The MINI E will initially be made available to select private and corporate customers as part of a pilot project in the US states of California, New York and New Jersey. The company is looking into expanding the MINI E pilot to include Europe. The MINI E will celebrate its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19 and 20.

The MINI E's electric drive train produces a peak torque of 220 Newton meters, delivering seamless acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 152 km/h (95 mph). Featuring a suspension system tuned to match its weight distribution, the MINI E sports the brand's hallmark agility and outstanding handling.

By introducing the MINI E, the BMW Group is underscoring the resolve with which it works towards reducing energy consumption and emissions in road traffic. The BMW Group is drawing on its unique technological expertise in the field of drive systems to develop a vehicle concept enabling zero emissions without renouncing the joy of driving. Putting some 500 cars on the road under real daily traffic conditions will make it possible to gain widely applicable hands-on experience. Evaluating these findings will generate valuable know-how, which will be factored into the engineering of mass-produced vehicles. The BMW Group aims to start series production of all-electric vehicles over the medium term as part of its Number ONE strategy. The development of innovative concepts for mobility in big-city conurbations within the scope of "project i" has a similar thrust, as its objective also includes making use of an all-electric power train.

The energy storage unit: cutting-edge lithium-ion technology engineered specifically for use in the MINI.
Based on the current MINI, the car will initially be available as a two-seater. The space taken up by back-seat passengers in the series model has been reserved for the lithium-ion battery. When in use in the zero-emissions MINI, the battery unit combines high output with ample storage capacity and a small footprint with power ratios that are unrivalled in this field of application so far. The lithium-ion storage unit will have a maximum capacity of 35 kilowatt hours (kWh) and transmit energy to the electric motor as direct current at a nominal 380 volts. The rechargeable battery is made up of 5,088 cells grouped into 48 modules. These modules are packaged into three battery elements that are compactly arranged inside the MINI E.

The energy storage unit's basic components are based on the technological principle that has proven itself in practice in power supplies for mobile phones and portable computers. The MINI E's lithium-ion battery can be plugged into all standard power outlets. Its charge time is strongly dependent on the voltage and amperage of the electricity flowing through the grid. In the USA, users can recharge a battery that has been completely drained within a very short period of time using a wallbox that will ship with every MINI E. The wallbox will be installed in the customer's garage, enable higher amperage, and thus provide for extremely short charging times. Wallboxes fully recharge batteries after a mere two-and-a-half hours.

Driven by electricity: reliably, affordably and free of emissions.
A full recharge draws a maximum of 28 kilowatt hours of electricity from the grid. Based on the car's range, a kilowatt hour translates into 5.4 miles. Besides the benefit of zero-emissions driving, the MINI E thus offers significant economic advantages over a vehicle powered by a conventional internal combustion engine as well.

The heavy-duty battery delivers its power to an electric motor, which transforms it into thrilling agility. Mounted transversely under the MINI E's bonnet, the drive train unleashes its full thrust from a dead standstill. This provides for the car's fascinating launch capability. The MINI E's intense driving experience is augmented by its dynamic deceleration potential, which is also directly coupled to the accelerator pedal. As soon as the driver releases the gas pedal, the electric motor acts as a generator. This results in braking force, and the power recovered from the kinetic energy is fed back to the battery. This interaction ensures extremely comfortable drives - especially at medium speed with constant, but marginal, variation. In city traffic, some 75 percent of all deceleration can be done without the brakes. Making substantial use of this energy recuperation feature extends the car's range by up to 20 percent.

Signature MINI agility in a new guise.
Weighing in at 1,465 kilograms (3,230 lbs), the MINI E has an even weight distribution. Minor modifications made to the suspension ensure safe handling at all times. The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system has been adapted to this model's specific wheel loads.
The MINI E's brake system comes with a newly developed electric underpressure pump. Its Electrical Power Assisted Steering (EPS) is the same as the one used in mass-produced MINIs. Both brake and steering assistance react to driving conditions and are thus extremely efficient. Even the air conditioning's electrical compressor only operates if desired or necessary.

Design: unmistakably MINI, undoubtedly new.
At first glance, the MINI E is obviously an iteration of the brand. But its design, which is the blueprint for the zero-emissions two-seater, has been complemented by a number of visual cues that point to its revolutionary drive concept. All of the units produced for the pilot project will have the same paintwork and bear a serial number next to their side turn signal lights.
The MINI E's coachwork sports an exclusive combination of metallic Dark Silver on all panels but the roof, which is clad in Pure Silver. What distinguishes the zero-emissions MINI is a specially designed logo in Interchange Yellow, depicting a stylized power plug in the shape of an "E" set against the silver backdrop. It has been applied to the roof, in smaller dimensions to the front and back, to the charger port lid, the dashboard trim, and - combined with the MINI logo - to the door jamb, in slightly modified form. The color of the roof edges, mirror housings, interior style cues and seat seams will match the logo's yellow tone as well.

Moreover, the central gauge and the battery level indicator behind the wheel of the MINI E, which replaces the MINI's rev counter, feature yellow lettering against a dark grey background. The battery level is displayed in percentage figures. The central gauge includes an LED display indicating power consumption in red and power recuperation in green.
MINI E customers will be part of a pioneering mission.

A 500-unit, limited-production MINI E series will be manufactured through the end of 2008. The project will thus attain an order of magnitude that clearly exceeds the size of currently comparable test series. Putting the MINI E on the road on a daily basis will be a pioneering feat to which both the drivers and engineers of the first zero-emissions MINI will contribute as a team.

MINI E customers will join forces with BMW Group experts to assist in the project's scientific evaluation. MINI E engineers accord high importance to staying in touch with the drivers on a regular basis, as this will help them analyze driver behavior besides vehicle characteristics in order to gain the most accurate and realistic picture of the demands placed on a vehicle with a purely electrical drive in the select usage areas.

Special charging station and full service for every MINI E.
The cars will change hands based on a one-year lease with an extension option. Monthly lease installments will cover any required technical service including all necessary maintenance and the replacement of wearing parts. At the end of the lease, all of the automobiles belonging to the project will be returned to the BMW Group's engineering fleet where they will be subjected to comparative tests.
The MINI E's lithium-ion battery can be charged using a wallbox provided to MINI customers. Only lockable garages or similar buildings will qualify as homebases and power stations for the MINI E.

Maintenance by qualified specialists.
The electric drive's high-voltage technology requires that maintenance work be done by qualified personnel using special tools that are not included in MINI service partners' standard toolboxes. In light of this, a service base will be set up on both coasts, staffed by service engineers that are specially trained to perform maintenance and repair work on the MINI E's electrical components. In the event of drive malfunction, these experts will provide professional support at the customer's local MINI dealer or the service base's specially equipped workshop. Technical inspections will take place after 3,000 miles (just under 5,000 kilometers) and at least after six months.

Production in Oxford and Munich.
The MINI E has already gone through the major phases of product development for mass-produced vehicles and passed numerous crash tests on the way. Aspects investigated besides passenger protection were the impact of collision forces on the lithium-ion battery and finding a non-hazardous location for it in the car. The MINI E's energy storage unit emerged completely unscathed from all of the crash tests mandated by US standards, which are especially high.

Production of the approximately 500 cars will take place at the company's Oxford and Munich sites and is scheduled for completion before the end of 2008. MINI's UK plant will be responsible for manufacturing the entire vehicle with the exception of the drive components and the lithium-ion battery, with the brand's series models rolling off its assembly lines concurrently. The units will then be transferred to a specially equipped manufacturing complex situated on BMW plant premises where the electric motor, battery units, performance electronics and transmission will be integrated.

2010 Lincoln MKZ builds on success with new interior, more features, more quiet experience

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19, 2008 – Customers who have come to equate Lincoln with elegant, modern design, unparalleled comfort, unrivaled features and top quality have still more reason to favor the brand: the new 2010 Lincoln MKZ mid-size sedan.

“The new MKZ improves on the success of the current vehicle with Lincoln’s new signature look, appointments that amplify and expand the Lincoln portfolio and a faster, more refined powertrain,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas.
New for 2010, the MKZ features a new sport version with special sport suspension tuning with stiffer springs and larger stabilizer bars, 18-inch Euroflange polished wheels, unique grille, darkened headlamps, a decklid MKZ badge with a red “Z” and an interior with contrasting piping and unique appliqués.

The new Lincoln MKZ also offers segment-exclusive features, including first-in-class Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA), which makes navigating traffic and parking lots safer and easier.

BLIS tracks vehicles in the blind-spot zones on either side of the vehicle using two multiple-beam radar modules behind the rear fenders. Indicator lights in the outside rear-view mirror on both sides of the vehicle warn the driver when a vehicle enters the defined blind-spot zone, extending from the side mirror to 10 feet behind the vehicle and 10 feet away from the vehicle.

CTA uses the BLIS radar sensors to alert the driver of approaching traffic while in reverse and backing out of a parking spot. The CTA tracks up to 65 feet on either side of the vehicle and warns the driver through both audible and visual alerts.

In addition to this new technology for mid-size sedans, MKZ offers SYNC, Next-Generation Voice-Activated Navigation, keyless entry, Easy Fuel™ capless fuel filler, THX-branded audio and adaptive headlamps.

The new MKZ also features Lincoln signature design elements, including the split-wing grille and thinner wraparound head lamps for a wider, sportier look. Its chamfered front fascia mirrors the MKS, with a sculpted hood and ridges flowing into the A-pillar. In the rear, which features a new decklid, LED taillamps accentuate the width of the car, separated by the Lincoln star.

The Lincoln MKZ’s presence is enhanced by 17-inch aluminum wheels, available 17-inch chrome wheels, and available 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, which are included in the Sport Appearance Package with sport-tuned suspension.
Inside, MKZ’s cabin reflects and even more upscale look, featuring more chrome, genuine aluminum and wood depending on the trim package, an all-new instrument panel, detailed touches including new welcome lighting, chimes, tuxedo stitching on luxury leather seats and Bridge of Weir leather.

The world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland, pioneered on the classic Lincoln Continental Mark II and used on the MKS, wraps the MKZ seats. The MKZ leather is unembossed, allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through.

The leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a buttery soft hand, and Bridge of Weir uses a chromium-free tanning process, which makes it easier to recycle.

“We’ve increased the luxury feel and improved on what was already a great interior,” said Peter Horbury, executive director of Design, The Americas. “We have a new interior theme with all-new primary touchpoints, complemented by new features and technologies that make the 2010 Lincoln MKZ stand out in the competitive mid-size segment.”

Additions or improvements to the 2010 Lincoln MKZ interior include:
Armrest clamshell storage

The new Lincoln MKZ is more than just a pretty face and striking new interior. New technology features help Lincoln’s new mid-size sedan stand out, too. They include:
SYNC: The voice-activated hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft. The system fully integrates most Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players, providing customers hands-free cell phone and music selection capabilities – plus new 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report provided with no monthly fees.
911 Assist: When a phone is properly paired, turned on and connected to SYNC, the system is ready to assist in placing a call directly to a local 911 emergency operator in the event of an air bag-deploying accident. The key advantage of SYNC 911 Assist is speed, as calls are placed directly to local 911 operators.
Vehicle Health Report (VHR): SYNC gathers relevant information from the major vehicle control modules and packages diagnostic data into a usable format in a matter of minutes. That data packet is sent to Ford via an 800-number automatically dialed using the customer’s paired and operable mobile phone.
Voice-Activated Navigation, which integrates several functions including voice recognition destination entry, climate control and SIRIUS satellite radio into one easy-to-use system, displaying them on an 8-inch touch-screen display. The navigation system’s text-to-speech function calls out street names while in route to a destination and reads incoming text messages when the system is linked to SYNC. The integrated DVD player is capable of reading CD-Audio, MP3 CDs, DVD, DVD-Audio and DVD-ROM (for digital map updates). A music jukebox function stores more than 150 hours of music. The screen even can be customized with personal photos.
SIRIUS® Travel Link™, an industry-leading technology that, when combined with the voice-activated navigation system will provide users with real-time traffic data with accident and incident information, coast-to-coast weather data including current conditions and five-day forecasts, and fuel price information for over 120,000 gas stations.
Travel Link also offers sports scores and schedules and a listing of more than 4,500 movie theaters with movie times, theater addresses, movie synopses and more.
Reverse Camera System mounts a small camera on the decklid that is activated when the Lincoln MKZ is shifted into reverse, giving the driver a clear view behind the vehicle.

The video image is displayed in the optional navigation screen on Lincoln MKZs equipped with that option or in the self-dimming rearview mirror vehicles without navigation.
Ambient Lighting System is displayed around the footwells, cup holders, door map pockets, door release handles, door and instrument accents and scuff plates – plus special “Welcome” and “Farewell” sequential lighting.
THX II Premium Certified Audio System with 5.1 Surround Sound, which is provided by a 12-channel amplifier that delivers 600 watts to 14 strategically placed speakers, including two subwoofers. A center channel speaker array features THX Slot Speaker™ technology, which allows for a wider sound image and better control of how music distributed throughout the vehicle’s acoustically engineered cabin. In addition, the system features a 10 GB hard drive jukebox, allowing Lincoln owners to store up to 2,400 of their favorite music tracks.

Other features for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ include:
Rain-sensing wipers, which detect moisture on the windshield and are activated.
A new cabin air filter, which removes respiratory irritants and toxins caused by traffic and industrial pollution. Additionally, the air filter protects the HVAC/climate control system by blocking water and moisture.
Segment-exclusive Adaptive HID headlamps, which rotate according to speed and steering inputs to allow greater visibility around turns
SOS Post Crash Alert, which activates the horn, emergency flashers, automatically unlocks doors and turns on the interior/puddle lamps when an air bag is deployed. The system activates the emergency flashers when a spinout is detected.

Faster engine performance, strong fuel economy
The award-winning 3.5-liter V-6 Duratec engine powers the 2010 Lincoln MKZ, delivering 263 horsepower and 249 pounds-feet of torque. The 3.5-liter uses a compact, lightweight dual-overhead cam valvetrain for peak power and smooth operation at high RPMs.

This engine also incorporates intake variable cam timing to optimize valve timing for a smooth idle and an impressive broad torque curve with good power.

The six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, which is front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive availability, is standard on the 2010 Lincoln MKZ. Powertrain performance is improved dramatically, with 0-60 mph times dropping from 7.7 to 7.1 seconds.

The engine – and the MKZ itself – is quieter. Every piece of sound packing was redone.

“The customer definitely should notice how quiet the new MKZ is,” said Chief Engineer J.D. Shanahan. “That’s important – especially in the luxury sedan buyers who perceive that quietness equates to quality.”

The MKZ engineering team also concentrated on the engine mount subsystem, finding the sound that balances sportiness and luxury, said Matt Hettenhouse, powertrain team leader.

A high 10.3:1 compression ratio and aluminum cylinder heads designed for high air flow and optimized combustion help complete the package, supporting the engine’s ability to deliver great performance and fuel economy, along with low emissions.

Unique to the 2010 Lincoln MKZ are re-engineered resonators on the air-induction system. “They deliver the powerful, refined sound Lincoln MKZ customers expect,” Hettenhouse said.

The six-speed transmission allows for lower early gears for better acceleration and taller high gears for better highway mileage. Downshifts are locked out to protect the engine from over-revving. The “enhanced overdrive cancel” mode locks out the fifth and sixth gears, allows shifts at higher speed for more engine braking and downshifts for “grade assist” functionality.

Unique tuning, too
The 2010 Lincoln MKZ was completely revised and uniquely tuned for ride comfort.
The team changed the rear suspension in the lower control arm control point to move the roll center closer to the center of gravity, which improved the ride-handling characteristics. A hydraulic variable-flow steering pump changes the flow rate at lower speeds to give better response, improving the turning circle and easier parking efforts.

The Lincoln MKZ’s available all-wheel drive (AWD) system has been retuned for better traction and lower noise, vibration and harshness. The system uses an electro-mechanical clutch and employs two basic modes of torque transfer – pre-emptive torque (before wheel slip) and slip-control torque (after wheel slip). This dual system gives the driver confidence in any situation, while the suspension has been specially tuned to be more neutral when cornering.

“When the Lincoln MKZ accelerates, even lightly, from a stop on any surface – dry pavement, wet pavement, sand, gravel, ice, mud – pre-emptive torque is transferred to the rear wheels,” said Jim Fritz, AWD product development engineer. “As an added measure to control front wheel slip on slippery surfaces, slip control torque is added to equalize front and rear wheel speeds.”

The AWD system works in harmony with brake traction control to deliver more confidence to Lincoln MKZ customers. Ford’s AdvanceTrac electronic stability control keeps drivers in command as well.

“The driving experience has been improved, delivering a better ride and vehicle control,” Shanahan said. “Ride enhancements, a new sport package, new technologies, the signature Lincoln design and a strong quality story help the new 2010 Lincoln MKZ set a new standard in mid-size luxury sedans.”

The 2010 Lincoln MKZ is built at Ford’s Hermosillo (Mexico) Stamping and Assembly Plant and will be in dealer showrooms in spring 2009.

All-new Mazda3 4-Door Sedan < North American Specification
All-new Mazda3 4-Door Sedan
The sports compact that delivers exhilarating driving pleasure

Developed in line with Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom philosophy of engineering
vehicles that are fun to drive, satisfying to own, and environmentally responsible, the
all-new Mazda3 is one of the most anticipated product launches at the 2008 Los
Angeles Auto Show.
The popular Mazda3 – the company’s best-selling vehicle worldwide – arrives as a
fully reengineered, completely redesigned, second-generation compact sedan
providing:

• A richer looking, more dynamic exterior design

• Added driving enjoyment with improved performance in all areas

• Progressive environmental and safety features

• A higher level of standard and optional equipment

• A level of sophistication above that available from any other car in the
segment

The new Mazda3 is perfectly positioned for the rapidly changing auto market. It
offers a mix of quality, styling, power, dynamics and fit and finish that hits the bulls-
eye for today’s customers. In typical Mazda fashion, Mazda3 will offer standard and
optional equipment simply not found on other cars in this class – exactly what buyers
looking for more value and less bulk want.

This 2010 edition stands on tall shoulders: the first-generation Mazda3 earned 90
major awards from expert critics and achieved a 1.8-million sales volume during its
five years serving customers all over the world. One in three Mazdas sold is a
Mazda3. Even at the end of its build life, the first-generation Mazda3 continued to
earn accolades as a leading consumer magazine recently named this car as one of
the most reliable compact sedans money can buy.

Mazda3 Program Manager Yoshiyuki Maeda established ambitious goals for
Mazda’s most popular car line, “We were determined to advance the Zoom-Zoom
driving experience to new heights because that unique feeling lies at the very heart of
Mazda. On the heels of the original Mazda3’s success, we aimed to again exceed
the expectations of customers all over the world by a wide margin. This meant
providing drivers with a sense of exhilaration whether they were in motion, seated in
the Mazda3’s cockpit, or enjoying its appearance from outside.”

On what it takes to develop a true “world car,” Maeda added, “The development
process began with careful study and identification of what features and performance
qualities would be needed. That initial phase ended with my conclusion that every
driving characteristic was eligible for improvement to reach our Zoom-Zoom goals.

EXTERIOR DESIGN
RECOGNIZABLE AS A Mazda3 BUT WITH MORE EXPRESSIVE AND DYNAMIC FEATURES
Chief designer Kunihiko Kurisu’s mission was to remain faithful to the Mazda3’s
existing visual identity while evolving its appearance with richer, bolder design
strokes. Infusing each subsequent new model with more emotional aesthetics is a
longstanding Mazda tradition. The key Mazda3 exterior design highlights are:
• A move toward a more unified Mazda global “family face”
• A reinforced frontal identity which integrates the lower air intake with a more
emphatic and instantly recognizable five-point grille
• To stress power and dynamism, major design elements focus on or flow
toward the vehicle’s central axis. At the front, fascia lines converge on the
center-point at the bottom of the grille. At the rear, the decklid’s surface has a
distinctive center crease
• The compact cabin, high deck surfaces, and flowing C-pillar features were
inspired by the classic coupe profile, as seen on the 2009 MAZDA6
• Hood and side surfaces are shaped to reflect light and physical surroundings
• Subtle wedge-shaped and curving side character lines shared with other
Mazda models give the Mazda3 a strong sense of impending motion—like a
predator poised to strike
• A new Adaptive Front Lighting System with self-leveling bi-xenon headlamps
has been added as standard on Grand Touring models. The Mazda3 is the
first compact offered for sale in the US with such an advanced lighting system
• Exterior design elements contribute to the car’s function by minimizing
aerodynamic drag and lift while providing the powertrain, chassis, and interior
with adequate air flow for cooling and climate control
• To supplement the four-door sedan introduced at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto
Show, a five-door hatchback Mazda3 will arrive later

INTERIOR DESIGN HIGH QUALITY, SOPHISTICATED, AND SPORTY
Inside, the new Mazda3 offers a sporty yet highly refined cabin. As if taut muscles lie
within, the dash sweeps dramatically from its center to the cabin’s sidewalls. The
large gauge cluster and center stack are positioned to tightly link the driver’s limbs
and senses to the car’s instruments and controls.

The slant of the instrument panel optimizes operating efficiency while providing an
attractive focal point. Range of motion studies helped position all controls at an ideal
reach. Key knobs and switches are positioned at the same level as the steering
wheel and the shifter. The Interior of the 2010 Mazda3 is based on our Human
Machine Interface concept.

All the information a driver needs is readily available in one concentrated area that
minimizes lapses of concentration on the road ahead. A Multi-Information Display is
positioned high on the center portion of the instrument panel to further minimize distraction. Navigation, audio, and trip computer information is provided in this handy
and easy-to-view location.

Front seat cushions have been extended by nearly an inch compared to the outgoing
car in order to provide improved thigh support. Backrests are 1.4-inches taller and
recontoured for improved driving posture. For the higher grade models, the upper
side bolsters have been canted inward for heightened torso restraint during
aggressive cornering. A three-position memory function has been added to cars
equipped with power seats – another first for the segment, and not offered at any
price on any competitors’ compact car. Upon approach to the car, the left-front seat
automatically adjusts to the settings chosen by up to three different drivers by
recognizing the code of the key fob.

To provide a top-quality cockpit appearance, the number of parting lines is minimized
and soft-touch surfaces show an elegant grained texture. An interactive lighting
system enhances the cabin’s ambience and sense of tranquility. Upon entry,
illumination rises in intensity in a programmed manner. Occupants are welcomed by
foot-well and door-handle lamps. Next, instrument cluster, center stack, audio and
climate controls brighten. When a driver or front seat occupant touches an audio or
AC switch, a change in illumination acknowledges that the command has been
received.

Dual-zone automatic air conditioning is an available Mazda3 option. Other special
features that distinguish this car from mundane compact sedans are: a Bose 10-
speaker premium surround sound system, connectivity for cell phones and portable
media players, a dock for iPods, and Sirius satellite radio. An advanced keyless entry
system includes push-button engine starting. The Mazda3 options list also includes
rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, leather upholstery, and heated seats.

Overall, the details included in the new Mazda3 all contribute to the sense of quality
in the car. This is a vehicle that offers equipment, fit and finish simply not found in
other vehicles in this price range and class, and helps perfectly position Mazda3 for
buyers considering a way to spend less and get more in this new economic climate.

POWER TO GO
SPIRITED POWERTRAINS ENGINEERED FOR MAXIMUM ZOOM-ZOOM,
MINIMAL CONSUMPTION
The MZR 2.0-liter four-in-line engine delivers 148 horsepower at 6500 rpm (PZEV =
144 @ 6500 rpm) and 135 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm (PZEV = 132 @ 4500 rpm).
Aluminum block and head construction saves weight. In the interests of power and
efficiency, four valves per cylinder are operated by dual overhead camshafts.

The new MZR 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is borrowed from the larger all-new 2009
MAZDA6. It shares the same construction features of the 2.0-liter engine while
upping output to 167 horsepower at 6000 rpm (PZEV = 165 @ 6000 rpm) and 168 lb-
ft of torque at 4000 rpm (PZEV = 167 @ 4000 rpm). Both engines employ advanced
electronic throttle actuation. Mazda’s exclusive torque base control technology
provides a highly linear acceleration response to every change of throttle pedal
pressure.
A slick-shifting five-speed and six-speed manual transmission as well as a five-speed
electronically controlled Sport-AT automatic transmission are available depending on
the model. Sport-AT offers enthusiastic drivers the control of manual gear
engagement with the convenience and comfort of a conventional automatic.

Fuel economy is exemplary and was key to the vehicle’s development. The Mazda3
with 2.0-liter engine achieves 25 mpg in city driving with the manual transmission and
24 mpg with the automatic. The highway mileage with the 2.0-liter engine is 33 mpg
with either transmission. The Mazda3 with 2.5-liter engine also tops 20 mpg in all
conditions. Equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, its city rating is 21
mpg, rising to 22 mpg with the 5-speed automatic. The highway rating is 29 mpg
with either transmission. As the new Mazda3 is larger in every dimension – meeting
the requests and needs of customers – Mazda engineers worked hard to deliver a
vehicle that offers fuel economy on-par with the outgoing car.

To refine the acoustic qualities of the Mazda3 powertrains, extra attention was paid
to tuning each engine’s intake and exhaust system. Resonance chambers were
implemented to quiet certain sound frequencies while reinforcing others, achieving a
well mannered yet sporty voice during acceleration. The Mazda3 2.5-liter engine is
equipped with dual tailpipes and specially tuned mufflers to reduce mid-range boom
and objectionable high-frequency noise at high rpm.

Mazda3s certified to U.S. Federal exhaust emission standards are equipped with
catalytic converters employing advanced single nanotechnology. It is used to embed
individual particles of precious metals, which are less than five nanometers in
diameter, into the catalyst base material. This new development enables Mazda to
reduce the amount of expensive precious metals such as platinum and palladium by
70 to 90 percent without impairing catalyst performance. The catalyst is an important
part of Mazda’s efforts to reduce reliance on limited resources.

SOUND FOUNDATION
INCREASED STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND REDUCED AERODYNAMIC DRAG
CONTRIBUTE TO Mazda3’S POISE AND PERFORMANCE
The 2009 MAZDA6 offers one of the stiffest unibody structures on any Mazda vehicle.
Lessons learned in developing that car provided major strides in structural stiffness in
the new Mazda3. A stiff unibody provides a smoother ride, more confident handling,
and improved agility with virtually no increase in unibody weight.

Reengineered unibody joints and increased metal gauges in key areas help diminish
the transmission of road and powertrain noise into the passenger cabin. Suspension
anchor points are more substantial to provide the solid foundation needed to absorb
steering and suspension forces. In addition to welded attachments, suspension
towers are bonded to the surrounding unibody areas with structural adhesives. A
combination of welding and adhesives – also borrowed from the 2009 MAZDA6 – is
also used to increase the rigidity and collision deformation resistance at door opening
locations. The stiffer door design also improves the effectiveness of weather seals
that block moisture and noise from the interior.

A Mazda engineering approach called Aero Flow Management was used to optimize
the flow of air around and through Mazda3 body openings. Even though the front grille appears larger than before, it’s actually 20-percent smaller to ingest only the
amount of air needed for combustion and cooling. An air guide attached to the front
bumper directs the flow through the radiator where it’s most useful. At high speeds, a
bypass flap opens to minimize cooling fan drag.

Air flow along the Mazda3’s body sides was improved during wind tunnel testing by
placing deflectors near the tires and by carefully tuning the upper-forward corners of
the cabin. Subtle refinements in the shape of the A-pillars, exterior mirrors,
windshield wipers, and taillamps also contributed to the six-percent reduction in wind
noise levels. The 0.29 drag coefficient (Cd) achieved by Mazda engineers is one of
the lowest available in the compact class and highly beneficial to highway fuel
economy.

CLASS-LEADING CHASSIS DESIGN
SUBTLE YET COMPREHENSIVE REFINEMENTS ADVANCE THE COMPACT
CLASS’S SPORTIEST MODEL TO NEW HEIGHTS OF DRIVING FUN AND FUNCTION
There was no need to reinvent the Mazda3’s chassis design because the first
generation achieved distinction as the best available in the compact class in terms of
driving enjoyment, handling, and all around poise. Subtle and tuning changes were
the order of the day.

A rubber-isolated subframe in front supports the entire powertrain, the rack-and-
pinion steering system, and the lower attachments of the coil spring MacPherson
strut suspension. The independent multi-link rear suspension also uses coil springs
with one trailing arm, two lateral links, and one toe-control link per side. Four-wheel
power disc brakes with vented rotors in front and solid rotors in back are standard
equipment. Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control are available on all
Mazda3s, standard on some trim levels.

To improve steering feel, the electro-hydraulic-assist rack-and-pinion steering gear is
now secured at three instead of two attachment locations. The additional mounting
point allowed a reduction in the stiffness of the bushings that support the steering
gear to diminish the vibration transmitted over rough pavement.

Resistance to body roll has been increased by recalibrating the monotube rear
dampers for tighter control and by switching to a new more substantial mounting
arrangement for the front and rear anti-roll bars. At the front of the new Mazda3,
lower control arms, the subframe, and mount bushings are all stiffer to improve both
steering response and cornering grip at the adhesion limit. A redesigned rear
suspension crossmember is both lighter and significantly stiffer, also for improved
handling.

The most notable change to the braking system is a new vacuum booster that
provides a more reassuring response to light pedal efforts without disturbing the
highly direct and linear feel inherited from the first-generation Mazda3. Adjustments
to the electronic brake force distribution programming enhance vehicle stability
during mixed braking and cornering maneuvers. Structural changes to the unibody
mentioned above help improve not only the rigidity of the brakes but also their
linearity during high-g stops.
The MAZDA3 with 2.0-liter engine is equipped with 10.9-inch diameter front rotors
and 10.4-inch diameter rear rotors while the more powerful 2.5-liter MAZDA3 is fitted
with 11.8-inch front and 11.0-inch rear rotors.

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY SYSTEMS
THE NEW Mazda3 IS NOT ONLY FUN TO DRIVE, ITS HIGH LEVEL OF
MANEUVERABILITY IS ALSO THE BEST HEDGE AGAINST A COLLISION
Providing the Mazda3 driver with a better ability to avoid a collision by steering or
braking safely out of harm’s way is a fundamental aspect of Mazda’s product
development. Mazda’s engineers strongly believe that the best way to help protect
occupants in a crash is to engineer control systems in such a way that the crash is
avoided in the first place. Carefully tuned electro-hydraulic power steering, a highly
agile suspension system, and powerful disc brakes are standard Mazda3 features.
ABS, Dynamic Stability Control, and traction control are offered as optional
equipment.
Also, a new Adaptive Front Lighting System with self-leveling bi-xenon headlamps
has been added as standard on Grand Touring models. The Mazda3 is the first
compact offered for sale in the US with such an advanced lighting system.

But in rare instances, a collision cannot be avoided. To cover these circumstances,
all Mazda3s are constructed with a Triple-H unibody design employing efficient H-
shaped steel reinforcements in the floor, side structures, and roof. This approach to
energy absorption provides crush zones that better protect occupants from the
impact forces sustained during rollover, frontal, side, front-offset, angled, and rear
collisions. Six airbags and active head restraints are standard equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
THE Mazda3 ALSO DELIGHTS CUSTOMERS BY DEMONSTRATING REDUCED
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Seemingly small changes can often deliver great gains. For example, the four-speed
automatic transmission was switched to a five-speed in 2.0-liter Mazda3 models, and
subtle aerodynamic improvements were made. The changes yielded a three-mpg
improvement (10%) in highway fuel economy.

To reduce consumption of hazardous materials, the new Mazda3 uses no lead in its
fuel tank, wiring harness, or undercoating. Hexavalent chromium and cadmium have
also been eliminated from the bill of materials. The toluene emissions from a new
joint sealing compound is 90-percent lower than before. Mazda’s manufacturing
plants adhere to the strictest environmental standards. These are the invisible parts
of Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom initiatives.

Efforts are underway to increase the scope of recyclable materials from 80 to 90-
percent when a Mazda3 reaches the end of its useful life. Molded plastic parts are
already labeled with ISO identification marks to facilitate sorting and recycling.
Fascias, interior trim, and the instrument panel are made of polypropylene for easy
reuse in those markets that offer it. Recycled material has been used to manufacture
new plastic moldings for the past four years at Mazda.

<![CDATA[BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid Adds Power, Efficiency]]> Ahead of its official reveal at the LA Auto Show, the official details on the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid have finally been released after months of us sitting on the edges of our seats, waiting with bated breath. The ActiveHybrid (as opposed to the other name considered, "LazyHybrid") is a "preview of potential" for things to come from BMW and shows off a mild hybrid operating from a motor integrated transmission, which was jointly developed with Chrysler and General Motors. The motor "assists" a 400 HP, 450 lb-ft, 4.4 liter V8 with its own 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque providing oil barons with cognitive dissonance the feel-good benefit of 15% better fuel economy. Complete details in an uncompromisingly self satisfied press release below.

Check out more on the 7-series Hybrid Concept from CarandDriver.com
