Well, I have a close cousin to this van, and its a 1983 model. It will be undergoing a cosmetic restoration this summer, and I plan on doing a series of posts about it.

The Italian Cars have been quite inspirational at LeMons. The New England race had a contingent of Alfas that proved quite reliable, and finished in the top 10.

On the other hand, having a very simple engine in my car proved to be the winning hand.

g*d damn! mercedes-benz... is almost *everything* you do artwork? i would hang that manifold on my wall proudly!

@günter macbeetle, codename: chrystlubitshi: Meanwhle, I'm wondering how you diagnose a hose failure at a track, where it's loud, you have only the tools you brought, and no hoist. Do you just listen around with a stethoscope and try to hear the sound of escaping.. er.. vacuum? air?
And how do you even know to look for a hose, instead of, say, a failure of ze German electrics?

@blueplate: Hose testing on the is best done with WD40 or starter fluid or proper flammable brake cleaner, which on the intake side will make the engine rev up, or soap and water to look for bubbling or sucking down spots.

@skitter: Mmmm, flammable. I think for safety's sake, we'd better use this can-- it says "inflammable".

i have very little van experience... parents always wanted more leg room than a van would provide... we had station wagons and suburbans... but i don't think anything can beat the middle/rear seat leg room (not to mention head room) of some family friend's van(s).... (i'm 6'4" now... captains chairs in the parent's new yukon xl denali are at the limit of comfortable space...)

okay, i lie... i forgot about all my time spent in church vans driving from indianapolis to where-ever... i was trying to forget those.. 15 passenger vans with 20 kids and 4 days worth of luggage each... crazy parent drivers passing rush hour traffic in kentucky at 85 on the shoulder... oh.. god... ***curls in to fetal position.....***

Aren't the Zs almost always dismal failures in LeMons?

...on the other hand, the Benz is not a surprise. It's a GT, not a sports car, and is as reliable as any post-W124 Benz is ever going to be.

I think its one of those things where the Honda driver never thought the B driver would come over that far and make contact. Yeah, I guess the Honda driver could have slammed on the brakes but the B driver has a responsibility to the other cars around him.

Since there was no one under the B, there was no reason to swing way out to make the left hander. The Honda driver has as much right to the track and a racing line as anyone else.

Rule #1 in racing - Hold Your Line.

Well, if it's not #1, it should be up there.

As usual, an MG fails to live up to expectations.

And where did our intrepid cameraman learn to drive? NASCAR?
I'll acknowledge shared fault, but he should have backed down.

@UDMan: The outgoing model is one of the ugliest cars available today in the NA market, so pretty much anything is an improvement.

...and yeah, it will sell, because it's a 5er.

I regularly drove a number of late '70s/'80s Chevy and GMC work vans as part of my job (including a few cross-USA journeys), and I have no particular love for them. The quality was pretty poor - windows falling down into doors, malfunctioning sliding doors, poor finish, mechanical problems, and an overall air of cheapness and crudity. The Ford vans of the era were better finished and felt much more solid.

@tonyola: Interestingly, I rather like the older GM vans, but I've never driven any of their competitors, so I suppose I don't know what I'm missing in a full-size van.

...but I do know that I'd commit war crimes for a manual transmission/slant-6 Dodge (they exist, but are likely rarer than hens' teeth). That would be ripe for a junkyard turbo AND a waterbed.

@Paul Y. don't drive too fast.: I have a brother in law that once owned a short wheelbase Dodge "Prospector" full size van, with the manual overdrive, and the slant six engine. It was silver, with the usual Chrysler Corporate Wheeldiscs (Same ones that went on a LeBaron, Diplomat, etc) but he got rid of it at about 30,000 miles, for a HYUNDAI EXCEL! The Clutch mechanism broke, and after it was repaired, he didn't trust it again.

The footage from this posting, as well as the MGB that went flying off into the grass shows that the speeds have increased at this venue. It also looks like the "Racecar" (RX-7, E30, Miata, Honda) is dominating over the "LeMons" cars.
