VW, KTM Motorcycle Partnership Rumors Swirling, Could Result In 1-Liter Car

Rumor has it that Volkswagen is in talks with KTM about partnering up to produce VW brand motorcycles. For you car folks, KTM is an Austrian firm known for its race-ready dirt and street bikes - think Ducati but with less of the pretense and more of the color orange. As the rumor has it, this could even result in production of the crazy GX3 trike.

VW Jumps On Dirt Car Art Bandwagon With Touareg Ad

Volkswagen, always being one with the hip kids across the Internet, has jumped on one of the popular Internet trends from a couple years back: dirt car art. When "wash me" was too dull, artists like Scott Wade began taking the dirt-coated windows and creating some pretty spectacular designs and now Volkswagen has done the same (or at least simulated it with Photoshop wizardry) with the latest ad for the Touareg. Beijing Has Some Awesome Interchanges

Since the 2008 Beijing Olympics are coming up in only a couple of months, we decided to take a look at the ancient Chinese city through the magical powers of Google Earth. What we found was much like a Chinese Dragon, both beautiful and terrible. The preponderance of Geographic Web content on the digital globe has us thinking a trip there would be most awesome, but the traffic and interchanges would make a New Englander cringe.

You Think That Low VW Thing Can't Drive?

Some of you, upon seeing yesterday's Down On The Street car, seemed to think that a car so insanely low can't possibly get much real-world street time. Wrong! I was out on Alameda's main drag last night and heard the distinctive sound of a straight-pipe-equipped air-cooled VW engine approaching. Sure enough, it was the Low RHD Thing!

What Would You Convert Into A Rally Car?

The photos today of the Ferrari 308 GTB rally car combined with the VW Thing (which rallied against the Allied Forces) got us thinking again about rally cars. Anything can be a rally racer, whether AWD/FWD/RWD or even 6WD. From the diminutive Kia Rio to the insane Suzuki Escudo, anything can be rallied. Anything... More »

1980 VW Rabbit Limo For Sale, No, We Aren't Kidding

If ever there was a project hellish enough to merit actual purchase consideration based solely on the novelty of the car in question, this Volkswagen Rabbit Limo is right up there. Just reading the description you can almost feel the flames of hell licking at this guy as he tries to convince someone to purchase a stretched Rabbit with rusty floors and a rotten interior that hasn't run since 2002. This one is definitely for the pure of heart, but hey, only $750! Description and more pics below. More »

1979 Porsche 928

We've already seen a 928 in this series, but I always consider the Malaise Era 928s to be the best ones. Sure, the later 928s were way faster, but late-70s car freaks didn't have much reason for optimism during a period of declining horsepower, disco tape stripes, and huge bumpers, and the then-new 928 was one of the few bright spots. So here we go with another JFG/DOTS combo car, which I found parked near the 1970 VW Transporter pickup.

Volkswagen Builds 300 HP Scirocco For Nürburgring 24-Hour Race

A lot of people think VW's upcoming Scirocco could use a little more oomph under the hood. The stock engines are rated from 122 HP to 200 HP, but this new version has a 300 HP version of the 2.0-liter TFSI inline-four. That's because the car has been race-prepped specifically for next month's 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring. More »

Audi RS6 Sedan Spied In Germany

We've already gotten a look at the twin turbocharged, V10-powered, 580 HP Audi RS6 Avant, but now a camo-free Audi RS6 Sedan has been spied making the rounds in Germany. The new sedan über alles shares a lot of the ultra-Bruce styling present in the wagon version, but also gets revised tail lights and the upturned trunk lid from the RS4. We're wondering what the implications are of an Audi running with the Porsche Panamera when the Porsche boys manage to get their sweaty little hands on a controlling share of VW. [WorldCarFans]

PCH, European Pain Edition: Borgward Hansa Wagon or Peugeot 304?

We had another nail-biter yesterday, with the Subaru XT6 edging out the BRAT by a 234 to 228 vote count in the Choose Your Eternity poll. We're going to declare that one a tie, and that's a good thing; after all, what's Hell without difficult choices? Today we're going to park a pair of European machines just inside the gates of Hades, where they will beckon enticingly to you with their only-one-in-town obscurity and double-take-inspiring appearance. It's lots of fun having an oddball car whose mere presence makes onlookers question your sanity respect your taste in fine automobiles, and either of these two could be a life sentence highly fulfilling project. Thanks to HotRodElectric and Franzouse for the tips!

VW Busbretta Isn't Quite Humiliating Enough

Pardon us for still trying to wrap our brains around this whole Vespa modding trend, but here is another Vespa-style (it's actually a Lambretta, but details, details) scooter mutilation worthy of noting. Not only is this person driving scooter, but it's a scooter with a sidecar, a sidecar that is modified to look like a Volkswagen Bus. So, Jalopnik faithful, which would you least want to be caught in: the scooter or the sidecar? At least in the sidecar you could possibly duck down low enough to not be seen. [Presurfer]

Volkswagen Plans To Sell Majority Of CC's In US, Would Sell Better As Cu. In.

The attractive Volkswagen Passat CC, which VW plans to sell as merely the Volkswagen CC despite America's resistance to the metric system, will be going on sale in the US this September and the company apparently has big plans for the "four-door coupe." In a conversation with Automotive News Europe, a VW exec was quoted as saying that the US is expected to make up 60% of the CC's sales. Though we like the look of the new CC in person, that's a pretty steep number for a more-expensive Passat.

Porsche Boss Finds Baby Monitor In Room, Freaks Out About Corporate Spying

Wendelin Wiedeking has got a lot on his plate right now. The CEO of Porsche has got a line of cars selling like hotcakes, a new super sedan around the corner, and is trying to expand their stake in Volkswagen on the side. So when an operating baby monitor was found in his hotel room ahead of his attendance at a meeting of VW's advisory board, we can understand if a little concern was in order. No allegations have been leveled yet, but an investigation is underway and the possibility of corporate espionage is not out of the question. We'll have to see what happens, but something is rotten in Lower Saxony. [AP Story on Yahoo]

VW Touareg Red Bull Rally Truck Catches Huge Air In Spectacular Crash

We all know that the annual Paris to Dakar Rally was relocated this year due to the middle east being in a total state of chaos security concerns, but it seems that this team thought the race was changed to a Red Bull Flugtag event. The crash happened in Hungary when the Volkswagen nose-dived into the ground, hurtling the vehicle into a series of flips before smashing back down on the ground. Despite the carnage, driver Giniel de Villiers and navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz walked away from the wreck. They even cleaned up after themselves by picking up the debris off the road. At least it's better than having to dodge RPG fire from al-Qaeda.

VW Adding Free Maintenance in 2009

Volkswagen is really going all-out to buoy its flagging U.S. sales. Starting with its entire 2009 lineup, the company will add a Carefree Maintenance Program at no charge that will pay for all scheduled maintenance for the life of the new-car warranty: three years or 36,000 miles. More »

Blackjack Zero, Now With Moto Guzzi Power

The quirky Morgan Super Sport inspired Blackjack Zero has until this point been powered by a VW flat four air cooled motor and the occasional 2CV plant. However, based on pictures on their website, it looks like Blackjack is set to sell one to hook up to Moto Guzzi power. There's no info to back anything up at this point, but the resulting car should be quite a bit lighter, with better cooling, and we're wondering if the standard shaft-drive can be reused for the little car. It would be mighty interesting to have a tiny car with 80 HP, a sequential transmission, and shaft drive now wouldn't it?

Volkwagen Demonstrates Parking Assist, Lexus Giggles

Lexus has been letting drivers prove they cannot handle basic driving functions for a while now, but Volkswagen is getting into the act and recently demonstrated a similar type of parking assist service at the Hanover Fair. The system uses the usual array of cameras and ultrasound sensors to perfectly park the car in a narrow space. Similar to Lexus though it may be, VW's Park Assist Vision does have one particularly nice function that would even make the DARPA folks envious. More »
