Couple of notes..... First lotus was never owned by isuzu. Both companies fell under the gm umberella during the late 80s and early 90s. Isuzu used lotus for suspension tuning and lotus got engines for the m100 Elan. Lotus also was involved with many other gm products during that time including the suspension revisions to the fiero and the corvette zr1 engine/ suspension.
Proton has greatly benefitted from lotus engineering including suspension design, testing and styling. A quick peak at any of the newer proton cars interiors shows design influence from the 2000 m250 show car which eventually has lead to the new evora. Many of lotus' contributions to proton, as with most of its clients, go without credit. 15% of all engines operating in Europe were designed by lotus (for example). Just because it doesn't say lotus on it somewhere doesn't mean the boys and girls at hethel weren't involved.
The Mazda5 already has enough torque steer to make the daily commute interesting, in an unintended-adrenaline-rush sort of way. A turbo will just screw it up further.
@B1663R: I actually think it would sell to not-totally-whipped car-enthusiast family men. (Not "family men", men with families.) Wife wants a minivan for their two-ish kids, Dad wants something that's not horrible to drive...
The Missus has recently become smitten with the 5 (a vast improvement over her previous crossover fixations), to the point that I'll be surprised if there's not one in our driveway by summer 2010. If there was Mazdaspeed variant, you can be sure that this child-less man would be all about it.
Looks like a Honda Fit which has been stung by many, many bees. Proton has owned Lotus for a long time now, you'd think they'd have more to show for it than a turbo'd people carrier.
If you're going to make something that performs like a dog, is likely to burst into flames, electrocute its occupants, or crush everyone inside into oblivion if you hit a dog in the crosswalk...at least make it look like a '57 Chevy instead of the generic sedan from GTA
If this all pans out well, and by well I mean that everything must go perfectly, it could be extremely beneficial for the American public and more importantly, Detroit. An all-electric car for around $25k + Jobs being created in Detroit = WIN
Keep me updated so I know when it's safe to buy some Detroit Electric stock.
@F*ckingPlushroom: Well, it may mirror Chicago electric perfectly. A defunct brand of well-engineered, durable products revived only to be built by the lowest bidder.
@Ben Wojdyla: Buy one for cheap, use it 'till it breaks, buy another one for cheap, use it 'till it breaks, buy another one for cheap, use it till it breaks...
Or until you lose copious amounts of blood and 3 or more extremities. In which case, you'll probably need to wait a few weeks before going to Harbor Freight again.
I see what Detroit is doing. They are simply waiting to deliver newspapers until Detroit Electric starts producing this car, so they can use electric cars. This will give them green cred, so that the other cities won't laugh at them. (Well atleast not as much, anyway.)

@B1663R:
your wish was answered in 2005 by Vauxhall with the Zafira VXR:

But who's to say what kind of reliability they're going to have?
They are going to be built in India and modified in Detroit.
