The other day I posted about why we call station wagons "station wagons", and in the comments I noticed a fair amount of discussion in the comments about whether or not certain cars were officially wagons, or just hatchbacks. Sure, it's a question a child might ask, but it's not a childish question. More »

The body style we in the US call a "station wagon" seems to have more variants on what to call it than almost any other body style, with manufacturers often using their own idiosyncratic names, much more so than they do for, say, a coupé or a sedan/saloon. But why? More »

Before many collector vehicles were collector vehicles, they were just used cars. Besides obviously rare and exotic cars chances are there was a time when someone thought the collector car of your dreams was just a cheap old car. With this in mind we want to examine the cars that are currently just old cars but will be desirable collector's items in the future. Now is when all the good stuff comes out of barns and garages for a run through the cool evening air, avoiding the choking crowds and coolant-boiling traffic of the Saturday cruise. Last night we stumbled onto this rare gem of a vintage station wagon at 13 Mile road and Woodward Ave — a Nash Rambler Cross Country Custom. What makes these ulta-rare is they were basically the last gasp for Hudson, which existed in name only after the marque merged with Nash in '54 to form AMC. More »

My Mom had an early 60s Ford Falcon. When my folks moved from St. Louis to California (before I existed) they realized the all black car needed an air-conditioner. They took the car to the Ford dealer to have one installed. The result was that my folks stopped buying Ford products. Forever. That made us into a GM family, and that meant a long line of B-Bodies! I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain the old man actually pulled off the trifecta of at one point having an Olds, Buick and of course Pontiac station wagon. We never had the Chevy, though... More »

Talk about depressing. Despite the fact that SUVs are being viewed more and more as a social disease, automakers are backing away from the logical alternative, i.e. wagons. Why? Well, according to this here article titled The American wagon beats a retreat, the reason for the massive slowdown in wagon sales is CUVs. That's right kids, crossovers. Sales of wagons went from 250,000 in 2004 to just 120,000 this year. The entire segment could fall as low as 100,000 measly sales next year. Does this mean no Pontiac G8 wagon? Probably. The story goes the original owner of this wagon was dismayed to find that the Plymouth GTX came out just weeks after he purchased the mighty land yacht. So dismayed in fact he took it back down to the dealer and made them option it the same as a Belvedere-based Plymouth GTX coupe. A 440 with six-pack bolted to a 4-speed get the heavy moving in modern times. We found the wagon at the Hotchkis booth, serving as a platform for a new line of sport suspensions for Mopars coming next year. We swear the lines on these wagons drifted right off sixties top fuel slingshot dragsters - or F-104 Starfighters. Sport wagons, ho! More »

Make way, youse mugs. It's Holden's new Sportwagon. It's an Aussie station wagon with <s>kung-fu grip</s> the rear-drive underpinnings of Holden's zeta platform. Following a month of leakage, Holden introduced it this week at the Sydney auto show. The sport-oriented hauler on display was decked out with roof mounted DVD player, Bluetooth capability, multi-function driver information display system and zone-based front and rear park assist systems, which are standard issue on the VE Calais V-Series sedan. There's no word on whether the wagon construct will cross into GM's US line. Of course, Chevy could use another Kingswood station wagon with rear-facing seats, but without Oldsmobile it would be impossible to bring back the Vista Cruiser. More »

A new image of Holden's Commodore VE station wagon has emerged from the digi-ether, ahead of the new car's debut at the Australian International Motor Show next week. It's the second shot of the new, Zeta-platformed wagon we've seen; the first was a cameraphone snap taken during a product presentation. This media-ready image shows what's likely a concept version of what Aussies can expect when they head to the forecourt next year, while they're shopping for something that can carry a case of wallaby and still have room for a few bags of lollies. The production model won't likely have those 20-inch wheels, though it will likely come in high-performance SS-V trim. That is, powered by a LS2 V8 producing 362 horsepower, with an optional six-speed manual. (Thanks to Roger for the tip.) Amid the smoke of grilled lunch and some manner of Calder mobile-esque covering, Infiniti revealed the 2008 G Coupe and the EX Concept. The G coupe, also known as the G37, packs a refined version of the already stout VQ-series engine tweaked to churn out 330 hp. Four wheel 4WAS steering returns from the Nissan 240SX Super Hicas past to help the G37 carve around corners. Infiniti also turned the shrink ray on the QX45 and came up with EX concept, which holds super potential to break into the ever popular world of modern <s>station wagons</s> crossovers. Full releases after the jump. – Mike Bumbeck More »

There was a time that the word crossover was not associated with automobiles. Folks that needed a vehicle with space for a bunch of other folks, kids, and pic-a-nic baskets full of goodies loaded up into station wagons. Acres of genuine simulated wood trim was attached to even more acres of good old American iron. Large displacement V-8's were shoehorned under the hood to get everything moving. Of course it takes a special sort of wagon fan to stuff a built 426 Mopar wedge into a '64 Plymouth Savoy Wagon and run it into the tens out at the dragstrip. That man is Gaffo Jones. Wagons of Steel is what he does. To see what it takes to keep a Mopar heavy running into the tens and what an obsession with station wagons is really all about say hello to Gaffo. And no, it's not a hemi. – Mike Bumbeck More »
