Further bolstering snarky bloggers' ruthless ribbing of Chrysler as a company on the ropes and desperate for any money it can get, the Cerberus-owned brand is extending employee pricing to the Dodge Viper SRT10. Employees, spouses, friends and acquaintances (basically the entire city of Detroit) can get any Viper as long as it isn't the fire-breathing ACR model for the same pricing deal as a Jeep Patriot. Chrysler is even going out and offering that pricing to the 1.2 million employees of Chinese importer retail giant Wal Mart and to Chrysler's bosses at Cerberus. Despite calls to Dodge dealers we've not been able to determine what pricing will be for the V10-powered anti-grocery-getter with the employee deal but it's usually around 3% off the sticker price. With the dearth of Vipers about the crowd America's freeways, we're expecting the number of Nick Bollea-related incidents to skyrocket. Well, as long as any of those people can get a loan. More »

Bob Nardelli, Chrysler’s Chairman and CEO, stated this morning that the company has "been approached by third parties who are interested in exploring future possibilities for Viper," according to Automotive News. Apparently, rather than just dropping Viper, Chrysler is now “exploring strategic options” for the Viper brand, meaning they’re trying to figure out how much money they can get for it. What is this now? A blacked out new 2009 Dodge Ram with a manufacturers plate lurking around a Waterford Race Track in Michigan? Why it certainly is. Why would a truck already unveiled be all blacked out and at a race track? Perhaps it's the hi-po model. Oh how delightfully gossiptastic. We have very literally zero proof this is anything other than a run of the mill Ram, but we're going to throw it out that this may be the Ram SRT-10, maybe just the R/T, but it's being subjected to some laps around the track. True or not we're willing to start some rumors.

Imagine being a lowly porter at a Dodge dealership when you're handed the keys to one of four limited production Dodge Viper SRT10's in Southern California. The salesman hops in the passenger seat of the freshly purchased supercar and instructs you to drive down to the station for a fill up as the paper work is being finalized in the office. Now imagine if your "foot slipped off the pedal" and you ploughed into four parked cars totaling the Viper. That would probably not be a good day. The straight-line racers over at DragTimes.com have the first shot of a pre-production 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10, hot off the Michigan assembly line. The only problem is that shot they've got? It's of the Viper in "Snakeskin Green," one of the new "lifesaver colors" that include "Venom Red," "Viper Violet," "Viper Orange" and "Bright Blue." But, since the new Dodge Viper SRT will have a 8.4-liter aluminum V-10 engine with 600 HP and 560 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 times that should be well under four seconds and a 0-100-0 in under 12 seconds — we're willing to let it slide. Around the corner from the stage where Dodge introduced its latest Viper SRT-10, DaimlerChrysler's Mopar parts division displayed this 675-hp 2008 Viper concept. It's a megaskutch meaner than the happily striped reptile that graced the stage earlier today, numerals flying in its wake (i.e., 8.4-liter V10; zero to 60 in under 4 seconds; braking in under 100 feet; ). The concept's a tuner Viper, tweaked out with cold-air intake, adjustable coilover suspension kit, lightweight 19" alloys and a tub of lukewarm chicken fat and accompanying spork. With its press embargo popping 13 days premature by Road & Track, we can reveal that Dodge's new devil whip is in receipt of an extra 90 horses. With 600 hp, this ram-snake hybrid will slither around the 2007 model year and straight into 2008. The upward revision in horsepower is via a displacement increase of the V10 (from 8.3 to 8.4 liters), higher compression, variable valve timing and a slightly larger air intake (check out those hood gills). The old-school T56 manual's been upgraded to a new six-speed Tremec TR6060 gearbox, which can withstand greater amounts of torque than its predecessor, according to Chrysler. The Dodge SRT-10 pickup may haul tons of ass off the line, but it sure is sluggish getting off the lot. A report, cited by Winding Road, indicates Dodge will discontinue the 500hp, V10-powered Ram at the end of the year, owing to sales of only 2,000 units.
