We've shed two wheels for the weekend and spirited northward from the Jalopnik Los Angeles compound to California's Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to catch the 2007 Red Bull US Grand Prix. We spent yesterday sampling two of Ducati's latest — a Monster 695 and a Sport1000 Monoposto, the company's throwback sportbike — on some of Bumbeck's favorite haunts like State Route 154. We also dodged landscape trucks on the 101 and hippie vans on the coast highway, following a risky stop for Oxacan food in San Luis Obispo and an encounter with some portly creatures of the deep near Big Sur. Difficulty level: A-ok. Now we're listening to the latest round of MotoGP free-practice sessions and stuffing ourselves with double espressos and Jimmie Dean food products. We'll be here all weekend, catching the latest chapter in Casey Stoner's rise to stardom, Valentino Rossi's slog back to superstardom and Nicky Hayden's bid to make Kentucky the new Motegi. The cowardly Detroit Lions are the only NFL team we know of with more law enforcement problems from the coaches than the players this season. And it's all because defensive line coach Joe Cullen, hired away from the Illini by first-year head coach Rod Marinelli, has been cited twice in the last two weeks by Dearborn police for — in the first instance, "driving on public street without any clothes on. (NUDE)" and according to Lions officials involved (obvs) alcohol — and in the second instance, Cullen was apparently more restrained, and only ticketed for a DUI (we're assuming he was wearing clothing this time). Cullen's scheduled to appear in 19th District Court in Dearborn next week, and we're totally thinking of showing up — maybe even wearing "Fire Millen!" shirts. We remember when the World Cup came to the motor city back in 1994 — we saw the first-ever indoor World Cup game at the soon-to-be demolished Pontiac Silverdome. It was an epic struggle between two powerhouses — the US and Switzerland — and by powerhouses we mean both teams bumbled to a tie. The best part was how excitedly drunk the fans from other countries looked — they made college kids look like the amateurs they are. So although we'll never understand why yard drivers at the Burnaston factory in Derbyshire would think moving 400 Toyota Yaris cars into a giant 80 meter by 40 meter St. George's Cross would be a fun way to spend a few lunch breaks — we're pretty sure we won't be seeing the red, white and blue made out of Chevy Aveo's anytime soon. Maybe someone was upset at the Ryder Cup captain's piss poor showing last summer in Michigan? That's the only reason we can think of for why someone decided to take some pot shots at pro golfer Tom Lehman's car as he drove down Augusta's Bobby Jones expressway last night. Lehman claims he heard a blast and found a bullet hit the vehicle's rear left side door. The vehicle was a "courtesy car" provided by the Masters tourney organizers. We know GM used to be a sponsor, and if they still are, we can assume it probably was a Cadillac. Anyone know for sure? Better yet, anyone have a pic of the car with the bullet hole? More »
