After a few unofficial reveals, the folks at Hyundai's extra value brand have decided to release three official shots of the 2009 Kia Soul. The first time we saw the boxy little 2009 Kia Soul it was still just a concept, and a funky tribal tattoo-covered one at that. Since then we've had peeks at the production model, but now we get to see the full picture. This is the first official image of the 2009 Kia Soul, and for an econo-box, it doesn't look all too shabby. The boys and girls at Kia just dropped a teaser shot of one of three "SOUL" concept cars they'll be revealing at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Hyundai's not-so-luxe brand claims the trio of customizable city cars will "reveal a whole new...fun direction for the Korean brand." The three concepts are supposedly closely related to an upcoming production model that Kia claims doesn't fit into "the usual motor industry brackets." The best part? At Kia's press release at SEMA this morning, North America COO Len Hunt got right to the point. Kia wants to capture a larger portion of the US econobox market by spending its Hyundaibux on design. It's a trickle-down strategy, with ex-Audi artiste Peter Schreyer leading the company's styling direction, and a major new design studio opening at the company's new campus in Irvine, California. The first expression will be the new Kia Soul small SUV, which Hunt today revealed will look nearly exactly like the concept, first shown at the Detroit auto show in 2006. It's something the company's research says will appeal to the coveted Gen Y demo. Hook 'em young, is the mantra, then send them upward to papa Hyundai when they hit middle management. Early in 2006, we saw the Kia Soul concept at the Detroit auto show. Back then, we thought the blocky, two-door was a clever prospect for a future, brand-defining small SUV. Now, spies have seen what looks to be a closer-to-market version of the Soul. Word is it'll be available only in front-wheel drive, powered by a 2.0-liter four over a five-speed autobox. Hyundai proper will show off its HCD-9 Talus, a two-door crossover concept that looks quite a bit like Chevrolet's T2X concept (maybe it's a Korean thing). Corporate child Kia let slip a sketch of its Soul (Seoul? Oh, we get it) concept, which looks like one of those boxy, stylized crossovers that some automakers built for Gen-Y kids, but it turned out 50-year-olds bought them all (now what was its name again?).
