Yesterday marked the end of production at GM's Delaware assembly plant, the home of the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice roadsters. We got a peek at the Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe concept at the New York Auto Show, but with the death of the Kappa platform basically a done deal we didn't think we'd see much more of it. It appears GM Performance Parts still likes the idea of a closed Solstice, though, and they're bringing their version of a GXP Coupe to the SEMA show this week. More »

You know what <s>they</s> Nick Hogan says about a yellow car. Well apparently GM thinks it's true; earlier we showed you a 2010 Camaro caught in yellow, and now we have footage of the 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe driving around in a similar <s>visually scalding</s> hue. We'd rather have the slick little turbocharged 260 HP coupe in a more understated Liquid Silver Metallic, but then we're probably not trolling for the same type of ladies as the Viper-drifting, Supra-crashing Hogan. More »

We saw it in the flesh a couple weeks ago and were sworn to secrecy, we revealed the explosion of pics and press release at midnight today, but now we've got live and in the flesh shots of the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe. The targa-topped coupe sure is sleek in its fine new enclosed coupe styling, and there was a bit of the swoon on in the room when it was unveiled. The coupe gets the same Ecotec powertrain options from the original style 2.4L with 173 HP as well as the GXP hoontastic 260 HP 2.0L turbo mill. Its possible we're slightly disappointed GM didn't go all out with T-tops, but beggers can't be choosers. We'll be getting the full compliment of live shots up as soon as we can. More »

You knew him as Jazz before he was so handily destroyed — ripped asunder, really — by Megatron. You also knew him as the Pontiac Solstice. But that never quite fit, did it — because he wasn't a convertible in the movie. Well, now he's been truly revealed as a production model, and most importantly as a coupe — the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe to be exact. Yes, that's right, the absolutely gorgeous alt-mode of the Autobot recon man's been brought back to live in a fully production targa-topped coupe — and what else can we say other than we're having a very private robogasm right now — especially over the lines of this sleek little two-seater. Maybe they'll be changing the name of the "GM display" at the New York Auto Show this week to the "Pontiac display." All we know is they'll be doing a lot of driving excitement at the show. We've already revealed the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP and more importantly, the 2010 Pontiac G8 "El Camino" sport truck. Now they've accidentally revealed the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe in an ad button on the official Pontiac site — further confirming what we'd already told you about the targa-topped Solstice coupe. Awww...poor Pontiac. Well, there had to be a misstep somewhere — and accidentally revealing a hot little tamale like a coupe-roofed Solstice ain't a bad way to misstep. Since we've seen this hard removable-topped coupe in person we can say... More »

We've heard the harder-than-a-rock-topped 2009 Pontiac Solstice Targa will be coming to the New York Auto Show later this month. Frankly, everyone's heard the new hard-top from Pontiac that sorta drops would be coming to New York. And although we'd like to tell you more, we just can't. Look, although it's not in our nature to be mysterious, we can't talk about it, and we can't talk about why. So just leave it at that. Who says the Germans are always hung up on Bruce? Sure, the press release we just received from German tuning house Irmscher says "Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail" at the bottom; but the body of the message has an entirely different tone. Forget the standard weaksauce Ecotec 4-pot; it seems the German hordes have realized they coulda had a V8 in their Opel GT. So Irmscher is releasing their version of the wee little roadster made off the same assembly line as our Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice with a 480 PS (473 HP) 6.0-liter V8 of unspecified origin. We're sure the German Green Party will totally be happy. Full press release with all the hilarious German-English translation errors — like "V8 Power to be enjoyed" — after the jump. We're just going to sit here and dream of a V8 crammed between the rails of a Saturn Sky. Don't mind us. More »

In addition to everything else we've seen over the last few days, the General just revealed their hot like the fires of a summer solstice one-seater Pontiac concept racer we showed a drawing of the other day, the SD-290, today at SEMA in Vegas. The SD-290's powered by a 2.0-liter Ecotec direct-injected and turbocharged engine generating 290 HP. It's lighter than the usual Solstice through weight reduction by installation of the driver-side only windscreen and, you know, elimination of the passenger side door. Full press release after the jump. More »

One thing we admire about General Motors is that when they do do something right, they do it so right that conversations cease. I'm sure you've all been here before, "Yeah, well, the Porsche Blah Blah Blah does 0-60 in blah and goes around some track in Germany in blah and has this crazy hyper-tech thingy that does blah." To which you simply cock your John Deere trucker's cap, spit tabacky on his Eurotrash spats and grunt, "Z06." Done, next! And what makes the Z06 so damn mighty? In a word, the LS7 beating under it's resiny hood. Turns out that the General has another engine that is the bees knees dressed in cat's pajamas — the 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbo, direct-injected 2.0-liter Ecotec unit that powers both the Solstice GXP and the Sky Red Line to the tune of 260-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Meaning that a mill 5-liters smaller than the Z06's engine makes over half the latter's power. In fact, it has the highest specific output of any engine GM has ever made. So, we ask you and your GM hat for-a-day, what would you do with? You can see our nomadic response above. More »

Automotive News reports this week on GM's plans for its future as a profitable concern (at least for now) One point on Pontiac's timeline that grabbed our fleeting attention span was the year 2009. That's when AW says the previously rumored Solstice Coupe is due (Note: 2002 Solstice Coupe Concept pictured). Destined to be a favorite for club racers and the aerodynamics engineers who rue those craptacular hardtops they've had to add on the roadster versions, the Coupe will get the turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injection four producing 265 horsepower, though there's no word of a shoehorned V8 (hello? Mr. Mallett?). A redesign of the entire Solstice line is in store for the 2011 model year. More »

The General took four robots in disguise to the GM Riverwalk this afternoon to show them off in all their vehicular glory and gave us the exclusive look at all of them — before they're sent out west to californicate with the stars at the premiere. Although we weren't allowed to drive or even touch the GMC TopKick (Ironhide), Camaro concept car (Bumblebee), Solstice (Jazz) and Hummer (Ratchet) making up the four Autobot alt-vehicle modes owned by GM, we did find a way to make sure Jalopnik got a chance to sorta touch at least one of them. Ever since Maximum Bob took the wraps off his Solstice gearheads nationwide, as they are wont to do, have been dreaming about shoving a V8 under the bonnet. Of course the fact that the right wheel drive Solstice is built off the C6's frame rails might have had something to do with that. Mallet Cars, Ltd. was the first to pull off this trick on a wide scale when they released their LS2 Solstice. Right, they crammed a 6.0-liter LS2 engine in the kinda small Solstice. They even got an LS7 engine to fit, but apparently you had to replace the rear tires every 500 miles. Iif you pay attention to the tuner world long enough you will learn one very important maxim: absolutely bonkers is never enough. With that in mind, Mallett is offering up the Pitbull Solstice. More »

Yes, it's officially the end of the world. The Decepticons are in the gate, and evil now goes by another name — General Motors. The General's officially added their name to a "power partnership" with Paramount Pictures today at the General's pre-Oscar fashion event in Hollywood for joint promotion of the new upcoming live-action Transformers movie. As part of the gala, they helped introduce "four...movie stars." Namely they're who we already know about, the disguise-side alt-modes of everyone's fan fave Bumblebee (Camaro Concept), Jazz (Pontiac Solstice), Ratchet (Hummer H2), Ironhide (GMC TopKick). The press release, which we've got below the jump, treated us to at least one hackneyed and overused phrase: "GM will roll out a fully integrated marketing and promotional effort..." But, the killer for us is the blatant attempt at pandering to those readers of Jalopnik who may love the 'Formers, claiming we were one of those "quick enough to have freeze-framed [images of the Camaro, Solstice, H2 and TopKick]." I mean, seriously, you don't need a freeze-frame to catch the huge-ass Chevy logo, do you? Is GM Design Manager Vicki Vlachakis better looking than the cars she designs? We'll call it the Ralph Gilles Effect (we're comfortable enough to admit he is better looking than a Chrysler 300, if just barely). Vlachakis is the pen behind the recently launched Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky convertibles. Described in this flattering Freep article as "Part car geek, part Malibu glam girl," her work has definitely been turning heads. House & Garden magazine recently named her one of America's top 50 tastemakers, but we must ask... is she to your taste? More importantly, is she more tasty than the car she helped design — the Pontiac Solstice? To put it in perspective, we've provided both a Vicki Vlachakis gallery below (provided by the always big pimpin' GM) and we'll use Ford design guru Peter Horbury, seen here, as the control subject for "average looking car designer." – Matt Hardigree More »

Well, it's Friday and we're feeling a bit of a hankering for some Transformers action, and our fave fan-boy site on all things 'formers is all about the toys today, scoring not only pictures of the Pontiac Solstice-bodied Jazz, the Saleen Mustang-bodied Barricade and the Abrams Battle Tank-bodied Brawl — but also some pics of a not-yet-seen and until-now not-yet-named Decepticon by the name of Wreckage. Wreck-Gar? No — Wreckage. We've no idea what he is — although he does appear to be some kind of military vehicle like an armored personnel vehicel. We've also no idea what his role in the movie will be, but hey — good find on TFW2005's part. But that's not all we've got. We also managed to snag some clear-as-daylight PR pictures of the toy version of the Decepticon baddie known as Blackout in all of his MH-53 Pave Low blade-filled glory. The Transformers in a box gallery, sans Adam Sandberg and Justin Timberlake is first and the Blackout gallery is below that. And with that, our craving for Transformers tchotchkes has been satisfied for the moment. But if yours isn't, feel free to check out or tag page and our gallery for more to get your fix. – Ray Wert More »

More cowbell! GM's Opel outfit released details and visuals on the Saturn Sky variant that will revive the Opel GT badge. Like the Sky Red Line, the GT will get GM's turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injection four, producing 264 hp — good for a zero-to-60 time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 143 mph. It's been given the once-over by GM Europe's Design Studios in R

According to Automotive News, the upcoming Pontiac G8 — the new rear-drive sports coupe based on the Holden VE Commodore — won't resemble its Australian cousin, at least from the front. But it will share a schnoz with its roadster sibling, the Solstice, as well as entirely new sheetmetal forward of the A-pillar. Color us a bit doubtful the rounded retro-roadster shaping will work on a sedan, though we'd imagine it'll be better for the far larger car's aerodynamic profile than a wholesale lifting of, say, the face of the 1967 Bonneville. We'll see it at the Chicago show. Any Photoshop jockeys care to take a crack at it? – Mike Spinelli <a href="http://jalopnik.com/228933/about-face-new-pontiac-g8-to-share-facial-features-with-solstice" title="Click here to read more about About Face! According to AutoWeek, Pontiac is besting Mazda in the roadster wars. The upset is particularly painful, considering Mazda's enjoyed the droptop-dog spot since 1989, when it single-handedly revived the roadster genre. The Solstice enjoyed a 2,500-unit lead in the first 11 months of the cars' first full year of competition. And the Solstice is already ahead for the month of December. Is it merely the novelty effect, or will the brand formerly known as the one that builds excitement stay on top with the higher-performance GXP model hitting dealerships. Either way, Cecil Kimber would be proud as hell. – Mike Spinelli More »

The boys from Winding Road talked to GM's chairman of vice, "Maximum" Bob Lutz about the General's plans for the Solstice. While it seems the retractable hardtop bit will remain undone, Lutz again goes for maximum teaseage in handling the Solstice Coupe question. How's this for yes-not-yes verbiage: "If we did it, it would look exactly like the Pontiac Solstice Coupe Concept Car that we had at the '02 show," Lutz said. "It was always our intention to kind of do that." Kind of. So should GM do it? Well, it's been a while since we last updated folks on what the interwebs have been abuzz with — Transformers movie leakage. We're more than happy to give you folks an update courtesy of the nice young fan-boys over at TFW2005 — who've come up with some great sketches of two Autobots — Jazz and Ratchet. We've sneak-peeked Jazz above, and showed off how even if Pontiac's not driving excitement so much anymore, he's still showing off that Pontiac arrowhead logo, front-and-center. Pontiac had better hope Mr. Jazz makes it through the movie alive, or else there's going to be much talk (at least here there will be) of how it'll be serving as an analogy for the brand. Also, we've got Hummer-licious Ratchet below the jump and a screen-cap of a scene from the new film picked up from the folks at AintItCoolNews. Though we missed waving hello to the Streetfire.net gang across the spacious and accommodating media center at the SEMA show, we turn to them now for raw drift footage from a presentation on Tuesday afternoon. If you were one of those doubters who thought the Pontiac Solstice wasn't ready for the tarmac, you may be schooled by Rhys Millen's Red Bull Solstice GXP Drift car, whose two-liter Ecotec inline four produces upward of 500 hp. That car replaces Millen's GTO in Formula D. Score one for rhe sport compact kids. – Mike Spinelli More »

Pontiac's SEMA 2006 show cars will again be culled from its herd of Solstii, with the Z0K Club Sport (pictured) — showing off the company's SCCA factory race package — and the yet-unseen GXP-R (Wert!), which broadens the Solstice GXP model's power and spizzarkle. Product of the GM Performance Division, the SEMA Club Sport car comes with a carbon-fiber roof, six-point safety harness (Sparco), racing seats (Racetech) and steering wheel (Sparco) and "Orange Crush" paint scheme. Out of the box, the Z0K Club Sport package includes ABS, limited-slip rear diff and FE3 suspension (larger front and rear sway bars, revalved shock dampers, higher-rated springs). The GXP-R gets a power boost to 300 hp from the direct-injection 2.0-liter turbocharged four — reportedly via a cam job and software and turbo tweaks — and a full custom treatment, including Hydro Blue paint, mesh graphics, and some manner of body kit. – Mike Spinelli More »

We heard a rumor from somebody that Chuck Mallett was going to premiere an absolutely obscene GM Kappa-platform vehicle at SEMA. (Okay, we heard it from Chuck himself.) This isn't it. What it is is Stainless Steel Brakes' Michael Jonas' LS2-powered Solstice, fresh from Mallett's shop. With a claimed 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds, a shorty wheelbase, and a couple of hundred pounds over the front axle that weren't there when it was Ecotec equipped, Jonas comments, "It's a real handful to drive with all this power on such a short wheelbase. This car definitely isn't for the faint of heart." Knowing what we know, we're positively terrified at the prospect of what caliber of weapon Chuck'll be hauling out to Vegas. More »

If anyone caught last night's episode of The Daily Show, they may have caught fave rant-raver Lewis Black with the newest of his "Back In Black" segments. And this time, he turned his crazy eyes toward the General's warrior chief brand, Pontiac — and its recent decision to pay for an ad drop of the new Pontiac Solstice into a comic book. The resulting message, Black argues, is probably not that which was intended. More »

GM Performance Parts is adding a few choice trinkets to its Solstice-tweaking product line, with an eye toward tightening up the Pontiac roadster's performance to a less mainstream spec. They're offering a suspension kit to drop the droptop by 7 mm (0.275 in), a free-flow air intake, cat-back exhaust, 18" alloys and a cockpit air diffuser. Ok, so we're not talking Mallett Solstice, here, but GM's at least making good on giving the Sol owners a few sporting toys. Now where's the bolt-on supercharger and LS6 conversion kit? For those of you roadsterphiles willing to fork out a bit more dung for some extra bung (we have no idea what we're saying; it just sounded vaguely British), Pontiac's announced the price for its turbofied Solstice GXP, which cranks out a respectable 260hp and still lacks trunk space. The more bestial version of the diminutivest Poncho will sell for five bucks under $26k. Mazda's responding to the horsepower increase by installing a folding hardtop on the <strike>Miata</strike> MX-5, presumably to compete on cubic feet available in the boot. More »

Well, well, if this isn't the Holy Hand Grenade of Pontiac, we don't know what is. Okay, fine, the JATO Goat would qualify. And win. But still, the kids with their budgets and connections over there at Hot Rod have ginned up a Solstice with a dry-sump monstrosity more commonly found under the hood of the Corvette Z06. We'll take that treatment in a Sky, please. Nobody expects to get smoked to death with brute force by a Saturn. It's like the Spanish Inquisition and crap. More »

Last night, we were IM'ing with a fellow autojourno about GM's brand predicament. And then we IM'd some more with Detroit's Wonk about it. And this is our plan: First, kill Buick. Redo the Enclave as a Saab. Use Saab to replace Buick in the marketplace. Pair up Pontiac and GMC in the dealerships (which, by and large has been going on for years). Pair Saab up with Hummer. Make Opel/Vauxhall split the difference between Holden and Saturn, while spreading more development between the Ponchos and the Holdens. More »
