Holy mackerel! These photos come out of left field and surprise even us: The next version of the Mercedes Benz SLR will be getting gullwing doors. Obviously, the vertical lifting portals hearken back to the original Mercedes Benz 300 SL (incredible coincidence running that today huh?) and will ostensibly make the Mercedes Benz SLC the most sought-after supercar in quite some time. Certainly it'll burn the tarmac right off the street with V12 power, but this, this we are delighted to see. Congratulations Mercedes, you're today's real automotive company of genius. As you may have noticed when we told you about the North American debut of the Alfa Romeo Bertone B.A.T. 11, we started off the day yesterday at the 2008 Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance press breakfast. Actually, it was more of a press "stand-around-and-sweat". August 3rd will mark the 30th Concours held on the Meadow Brook Estate in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and they're planning on mixing things up a bit this year. Looks like the Italian Spanish stallions over at MotorPasion just couldn't wait until the embargo officially lifted on the new 2008 Mercedes SL 350 — the same car we've only seen unveiled in a Dubai photo shoot. They've gone ahead and posted two press shots of the new SexytimeLight from Mercedes. We've included one above and one more from the rear below the jump. So what's new on the new SL? Well — it's got a more angular look from the tips of the star all the way up the hood and check out the new-look antifog lights and simplification of the grille-bars. The folks at Mercedes made the mistake of revealing their refreshed Mercedes SL roadster in a populated area and now the folks at World Car Fans have the pics. While this change is more evolutionary than revolutionary, you'll notice the more angular grille and front skirt. Those thick five-spoke wheels are AMG, maybe? Anyone nearsighted enough to tell? The speed freaks may not be impressed by 201 mph, but we're more than floored at the prospect of nearly 4,000 pounds of luxo-roadster breaking the 200 mph mark. The suave Swabians at Lorinser managed this feat with a Mercedes SL by taking an SL65 Biturbo AMG mill and tweaking the electronic and fuel management systems to achieve 660 hp. Named for the high-speed test track, the Nardo3 also comes complete with a not-so-subtle body kit boasting wider fenders and intakes wide enough to swallow an Aveo (and also hopefully cool the brakes needed to stop this beast). The company insists the car is an absolutely reliable daily driver and have added enough Alcantara leather bits to make the most pampered driver feel comfortable. Full details below the jump: More »

Because being a bad mother is a full-time job, we don't blame Britney for taking time out of her busy schedule of chandelier shopping and court appearances to buy a white Mercedes-Benz SL65. As with everything involving Brtiney Spears, it was chaos at the car dealership and she had to have a police escort to test drive the 604-hp beast. Here's an idea: have a police escort anytime she drives the car to protect herself and others. Yesterday we saw a very heavily camouflaged Mercedes SL Black Series running around the roads in northern Germany. Well, the quick-to-snap shooters at KGP have one-upped those shots by getting us some not-as-much-camouflaged shots of the same Mercedes SL Black tester as the car left the Mercedes workshops and headed over to the Nürburgring to get some laps in. Although we've still no idea what's under the bonnet, some have mentioned the CLK63 AMG's 6.3-liter 500 HP V8 as a possible choice. One thing's for sure is this ain't your father's SL — it looks more like it was designed for the father of this guy we've heard about named Luke from Tatooine. The spy report from KGP below the jump. The kids over at the never-wavering line that's the crown jewel of the Edmunds blog empire has shots of what they believe to be the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Sport Leicht series. They've only gleaned one major detail from the pics — the front fascia's been redesigned with a single blade of trim across the front. Oh yeah, and the headlights are more rectangular. Mercedes SL350 and SL500 buyers in Europe can select a new check box on the options sheet. It's the SL-Class sports package, and it comes with five-spoke wheels, silver-painted front brake calipers and perforated brake discs at the rear wheels to heighten stopping power. Minor performance mods include a sport air cleaner in the SL350 installed to give it a throatier growl. The 7G-TRONIC automatic gets a manual-shift program and paddle shifters. Merc says the tranny programming decreases shift times by 30 percent. Inside are a few tweaks including silver contrast stitching, black fabric roof liner and aluminum trim, and Nappa leather. Judging from new spy shots captured somewhere north of My Liver Just Turned to Sorbet, Sweden (somewhere near the Arctic Circle), Mercedes-Benz is updating the design its next-gen SL. Spy photog Hans Lehmann says the shots represent the AMG version — the upper end of the new SL's model range. The 2009 model will reportedly get a closer resemblance to the redesigned CL-Class. Expansion of AMG's design studio continues unabated, with the division introducing new, track-day aero and brake packages for the CLS, SLK and SL Benz models — upgrades the house-brand tuning shop will slot into its "custom" series. They're on a major push to win some of the Euros they've ceeded to independent tuners over the past decades, though this superficial stuff is only one in a multithreaded strategy of aftermarket add-ons, special editions and DTM supercars. Messing with already potent AMG materiel is Carlsson's raison d'etre. This time, they've applied their epic — if not completely ludicrous — tuning capabilities toward the Mercedes SL 55 AMG, to create the CK 55 RS. What they've come up with is a 601-hp fire breather that can top out at 206 mph. As is their MO, they've done it by tweaking the supercharger to increase compressor RPM to, in turn, raise boost pressure. Then, they recast the engine software and added a stainless-steel exhaust kit designed to reduce backpressure. Simple. Such futzing reduces zero-to-62 time to 4.2 seconds. Next, the company plans to offer its C-Tronic automatic suspension lowering kit — coming soon to a left lane near the river Saar. More »

So the Merc SL is due for a facelift in the near future, but it's not as radical as the SLK's redesign, according to eMercedesBenz. On deck? More power, via an across-the-line power boost, with a displacement bump in one case and a reduction in the other. Nose and tail tweaks are in order, and the AMG model will also seea 24-horsepower bump, apparently to keep it ahead of the plebian Z06. More »

A poor man's Mercedes SLR? Well maybe a poorer man's SLR, but definitely a rich man's toy, the Kahn KSLR combines visual cues from the $500,000 SLR with those of the $100,000 SL in one bespoke roadster. Project Kahn, a luxury-vehicles builder in the UK, aimed to fill that $300,000 void in the Mercedes line with the KSLR conversion, whose most notable SLR-like feature is its restyled hood (bonnet). It also includes a quad exhaust, 20" wheels, a lowered suspension and custom leatherwork, Price? No word yet, but expect to displace about half of that void, all told. More »
