We had to avert our eyes when posting this, as this Nissan Skyline is so incredibly beautiful we worried its majesty would ruin our opinions of all lesser cars to follow. Perfection comes in the form of extreeeeeme stickers, three-abreast hood scoops, a non-functional roof scoop, at least two sets of driving lights, a bookshelf triple-high spoiler, and not one, not two, but three sharkfin antennas. This machine quite obviously is capable of extreme performance and should absolutely be taken seriously. By our decal calculations, it's easily capable of pulling dyno runs in excess of 1500 HP and hitting top speeds around 300 MPH. This makes the green GT-R look like diced liver. More »

It's Nice Price Or Crack Pipe time again, which means you have another chance to pass judgment on a car seller's possibly overoptimistic price tag! Today's car is one you don't see every day in North America, no doubt about it; the seller brought this '80 Datsun Skyline over from the UK, so it's even weirder than the occasional JDM car you might encounter. It's in pretty good shape, other than a spot of quarterpanel rust-through; we're pretty sure the L28 engine was never installed by the factory in these cars, so either the seller has the engine wrong or it's been swapped. Before there was the 2009 Nissan GT-R there was the Skyline, and if you wanted one in this country you had to go through an importer called Motorex. The problem was, the company didn't do what it was supposed to: import cars, convert them to DOT spec and then deliver them to customers. Sure, some cars got delivered, some cars even got converted, but most failed to do either. Until now, the full details of the Skyline's disastrous entry into the US market were the stuff of Internet legend. The new Nissan GT-R may be stirring up a lot of hype, but before the R35, Skyline lovers on this continent had to have their cars independently imported. The problem is, since the gray-market heyday of the '80s, the American import laws have been pretty dang strict. So, we decided to make our way up to Toronto, to check out how hoons in great white north do things. This particular operation, ONI JDM, has brought in everything from kei cars to fully-modded RX-7s, Supras, and of course Skylines. Despite the fabulous camera phone quality of these photos, the visage of Zingerman's Roadhouse behind this 2009 Nissan GT-R is undeniable proof Godzilla is stalking the streets of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nissan has a development facility in the area, so it's not entirely surprising to see the beast from the far east there, but nonetheless, it's the first we've seen on the road in the mitten state. We knew the new Nissan GT-R (R35) was big, but putting it next to the last generation Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) makes it look like a hulking behemoth. One would think the magic of perspective would slim it down so as to not look so porky, but the distance only seems to inflate the size. This is like one of those impossible reality drawings that make our brains hurt. From this angle it almost looks like one Godzilla is preparing to eat the other Godzilla.

We're very torn about this one. In Japan, the new 2009 Nissan GT-R's are limited to a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h). Which, quite frankly, is depressing. Remember though— that's Japan only. American and European hoons are (supposedly) limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). Back in Japan, should you take your Godzilla to a track, the GPS doohickies tell the computer to remove the limiter. Makes sense, right? Limit the car to a moderate top speed on the road, and then unleash its full, city-smashing, Mothra-wrasslin' potential on the track. We have two major problems with that. More »

What we have here is a Nissan Stagea equipped with an RB26DETT engine and a helping of GT-R body components. We approve strongly (though we're torn about the flashy appearance- wouldn't a total sleeper be even more fun?), and if we had 3.8 million extra yen (about 35 grand in ever-weaker US dollahs) plus shipping costs, we'd totally be bringing this right-hand-drive machine over to these shores. Nope, kids — hold your horses, it's not the new GT-R, that's still being revealed in Tokyo later this month. Almost like a tease, Nissan's just revealed the new 2008 Skyline coupe in Japan — it's the Nissan version of the Infiniti G37 coupe we saw revealed at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. That means this new-for-2008 model gets the same engine as the G37 — the powerful 3.7-liter V6 engine that delivers 330 horses in the Infiniti. The new Skyline somehow adds an extra three horses, with Nissan pegging the 2008 model at 333 HP and 270 lb-ft of torque in all four of the variants of the new Nissan two-door hardtop. Also available will be the full complement of toys found in the G37 including backup camera, "HDD CARWINGS" nav system and even real wood trim. Full press release after the jump.

A JDM-load of new information on Nissan's new Porsche 911 challenger, the GT-R, is pouring onto the fanboards today. As of tomorrow, preorders of the Japan-market GT-R will commence in Nihon, and Nissan's already launched its global GT-R site. As we once reported, the GT-R will come in three tiers, Base, Black Edition, Platinum Edition, with a 3.8-liter V6 providing the base engine for the lot. Though we still don't have confirmation on the twin-turbo top-ranger, we do know — via the North American GT-R Owner's club — that it'll come in six colors, but only one transmission option. At the Tokyo Game Show 2007 today, Sony let slip with news of a tie-up between the Tokyo Motor Show and the release of the long-awaited Gran Turismo 5. In addition to a new downloadable demo of the coming release, the game will reveal new car models to coincide with the motor show next month. One of those will be the Nissan GT-R, shown digitally clad with typical fascia and rear disguises in a new series of screenshots released today. Get out your official John Morton jumpsuits, kids. According to Japan's Car Top magazine, Nissan recently paired up 30 advertising and marketing executives with racing and test drivers on a secret burn in the 2008 GT-R at the company's Tochigi proving grounds. One unnamed test driver told the magazine it was a closed track day — no media types were invited. They reportedly subjected the GT-R to a battery of tests to compare it with a 350Z (Z33 Fairlady Z) and a 997 Porsche 911 Turbo. Attendees were told the test cars' interior was fake, and the cars still wore the black mask seen in every recent spy shot. The mole also reported the company says seven GT-R models will be released in various markets, and you'll be able to get them in any color as long as it's silver, the gun metal gray, white and black. Some not-entirely-unexpected news came today via the North American Nissan GT-R Owner's Club. Word is, following the new Nissan sports coupe's unveiling at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, the GT-R will make its North American debut at the Los Angeles show in November. Specifically, it'll be showcased in the South Hall (though don't start camping out quite yet). That makes perfect sense, considering the LA show follows directly after Tokyo, with press preview days on November 14 and 15. As car legends go, few have had their flames as passionately fanned as the Nissan Skyline. Despite extensive research proving only seven Americans have seen one on the street, and four have actually driven the mythical machine, it's astounding how often its tale is told. We're reminded of a particular Jonathan Gold restaurant review, in which he tells of intercepting scratchy CB conversations between truckers about a taqueria hidden somewhere in East Los Angeles. It's allegedly home to the world's most perfect torta. Gold never reveals if he found the mythic Mexican sandwich, or if the restaurant is anything more than a Hoffa-like figment of Teamster lore. And I'm glad. The reality could never hold up. That, in a nutshell, sums up my feelings vis-a-vis Nissan's decision to bring its Skyline replacement to America. The get here already upcoming GT-R may whip a Porsche Turbo's ass around the 'Ring, but in time, we'll learn its flaws. Luckily, previous-generation Skylines remain automotive apocrypha to us Yanks, forever shrouded in imagination and painful thumb blisters.
