At this point, we're wondering if NBC is captained by a board of masochists, as news comes down the pipe they've ordered up four more Knight Rider scripts from the show's writers. Mind you, they're just scripts, not necessarily full episodes...yet. If you've watched the show religiously, you're a sturdier breed of television consumer than we are, as we've given up on the thing. The legal wrangling between Carroll Shelby and Shelby American Auto Club (SAAC), the car club that celebrates his vehicles, has ended according to a release from SAAC. The troubles started when Shelby complained that SAAC had not been providing him with required financial statements and had been using his name and likeness in the course of for-profit ventures. SAAC, for its part, claims the club simply paid for itself. Whatever actually happened, some back-room maneuvering by both parties seems to have smoothed things over. Only 500 2007 Shelby GT-H Convertibles were made for Hertz's Rent-a-Racer fleet, but if you want one, 25 of them will be for sale at next week's Kruse auction in Monterey. True, you could probably build your own by bolting on a few parts to a standard GT Mustang Convertible, but if you're convinced a GT-H driven some of the hardest miles known to man by a series of cement-footed Ford fan-boy tourists will have some level of future "value," then by all means, head on over to the Auction. Sure, you'll have to pay $100 to get in the door plus a 10% commission on the car, but with so many of the yellow-and-black Mustangs under one roof, you may end up with a steal. Those on the fence about the new Knight Rider television show need look no further than these shots of the newly upgraded KITT from Popular Mechanics shot at Comic-Con 2008. At a panel discussion in front of Knight Rider fanboys-girls they showed video of KITT employing Turbo Boost (before a very long press conference where the actor that plays Mike Tracer admitted he drives a supercharged Bullitt). The video apparently also featured the actors getting into a truck version of KITT — a KITTchero if you will. More »

The ponycar fanboys at 5.0 Mustangs and Super Fords took a Shelby GT500KR press car, strapped it down on a Dynapack chassis dyno, hit the gas and recorded a monster 509 HP and 467.7 lb-ft of torque. When you factor in driveline losses, that means the King of the Road is putting out 590 HP and 550 lb-ft. That's significantly more power at the flywheel than Ford is letting on to. More »

At almost $80,000, the sticker price on the 2008 Mustang Shelby GT500KR was already on the high side of ridiculous, but we knew Ford would sell every one of these purported "King of the Road" 'stangs to pony car fan-boys. With that kind of demand, you'd expect to see a little bit of margin dropped on top of the already steep price by dealers looking to milk the fans dry, but little did we know to what extent. Though Unique Performance the company may be dead, the drama lives on. At least until Doug Hasty goes to jail, if that's what ends up happening. We mentioned earlier that an auction of Unique Performance equipment netted more than a million dollars, which was unfortunately only enough to cover taxes and not screwed over employees. As you'll remember, Ford teamed with Hertz to create the Shelby GT-H weekend racer way back in 2006. And like all rental cars, they're going on sale. If you missed the first Shelby GT-H auction, you saved yourself approximately $200K by purchasing one of the Shelby GT-H convertibles for the relatively low price of $55K. Now we have word that approximately 75 to 100 of the limited edition Hertz Shelby GT-H Mustangs will be going on the block at the Kruse's 17th Annual Auburn Spring Motorfair at the end of May for what we suspect will be a slightly lower price (though not as cheap as stealing one). Just when you thought you'd seen the last of KITT, it's back — at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach. We wonder if this means there won't be a full television series based on the movie after all. Yes, these were the actual cars used in the made-for-NBC movie. That means that these actually aren't even GT500KR models, but a pair of dressed-up Mustang GTs "inspired by the GT500KR." Though for the final bid of $300,000 for both the "Attack-Mode" and normal KITT, Ford included the rights to buy an actual GT500KR at MSRP. We have a tip from a former employee of Unique Performance, one of the ones Unique Performance owes back pay to, that the company's numerous assets will be going up for auction to cover the approximately $900,000 owed to the IRS after they filed for Bankruptcy. Well, the assets not needed as evidence in the 25 felony charges against Unique Performance. Among things going on the block are more than one hundred 1967-69 Shelby Mustangs in various conditions (some with original titles). More »

Just when we thought there would be a break from the Unique Performance Saga, we get word that things were even more rotten in the city of Farmers Branch. First, an investigation by CBS11-TV has turned up solid evidence that unskilled Texas prisoners were used to do the bodywork on the replica "Eleanor" Mustangs, including removing the VIN plates (which is illegal). Second, the poorly built cars cost upwards of $200,000 yet were built using approximately 13 gallons of Bondo each. Third, the U.S. Secret Service and Texas Department of Public Safety (state police) have launched investigations. Fourth, this may impact the way the prison system work program is implemented. Finally, according to authorities charges are imminent (probably fraud and title-washing to start). Many people have read All The President's Men, which covers the investigation into the Watergate scandal that eventually forced President Nixon to resign.
