Shanghai Automotive plans to introduce four new MG models to the UK market starting next year. The company just relaunched production of the MG TF with a limited edition run of 500 vehicles, but its plans to bring MG to the USA have fallen through. All four models will be built at Longbridge, which is currently having its production capacity expanded with new staff and equipment to handle the task. Shanghai (which merged with Nanjing last year) claims this assures the future of the historically troubled facility. But what new models is MG bringing to market? The Beijing Motor Show traditionally warrants nothing more than a collective "meh" from the mainstream automotive media, but it certainly caught our attention this year. Bigger and better than ever, automakers from China and abroad have done everything to bring attention to their cars but put a gigantic stuffed elephant in one. Oh, no, wait. They've done that, too. But why shouldn't they show off — as the Chinese market continues to mature into it's teenage years, we've watched it shed some of the awkwardness of puberty, but still manage to showcase that youthful wide-eyed optimism with some truly innovative, unique and beautiful concepts. Still, like pimples, a cracking voice and a random desire for adorning oneself with chrome bits n' pieces, this teen still shows off it's rebellious side with vehicles that are completely bizarre, ridiculous knock-offs of popular designs or in most instances, both. The boys over at the blog that likes to spend more time Kicking Tires than not reminded us of a little Zeta-platformed concept designed jointly by GM and SAIC that we'd totally forgotten we hadn't yet seen in person, but we need to be looking for at the Detroit Auto Show next month. It's quite possibly the most amazing Buick concept car we've ever seen — the Chinese Buick Riviera concept car. The Riviera concept made its initial debut at the Shanghai Auto Show last year, and now it'll be coming to make it's North American debut at none other than the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS — it's the fancy name for the Detroit Auto Show). Basically, it'll be the first time we've seen a Buick sedan we'd actually want to buy. Well, at least since the GNX anyway.

Rich Saudi oil barons will now get the opportunity to add some Chinese-made Cadillac style to their car collections. The General's just announced the automaker plans to begin selling the Shanghai-built Cadillac SLS in the Middle East starting in the first quarter of 2008. It will never be mistaken for a Greg of Akron masterpiece, but nevertheless, it was an unexpected pleasure to run across this GMC Savana conversion van near the banks of the River Huangpu. We're obviously all familiar with American custom van culture, and Japan's mini-dekotoras are the stuff of both legends and dreams, but we wonder, how does one van in a communist state? Will we ever see another Tienanmen Square, only this time at the Guangzhou Van-In with the protesters wasted on Tsingtao, taking on Chinese tanks with their vans? What a find! Squirreled away in the corner of a parking lot across the street from the Oriental Pearl Tower, we found this motley, rusty, horizontally-opposed cadre of Longteng motorcycles. Note that we know very little about them, other than they're council-block grey, rusty and have sidecars attached. Pudong literally means "East of the River Huangpu." Until a decade and a half ago, this area of Shanghai was nothing. Since then, it's exploded into a teeming mass of high-rises and boulevards. And as the home of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Jin Mao Building (where we're writing this from the 81st floor), the area along the Huangpu is ground zero for tourists. As such, the Toyota Coaster, unknown in the US, is a common sight. Think of it as a short bus with a Cialis scrip. Besides Chinese people and hazy air, the most common sight in Shanghai simply has to be Volkswagen Santana taxis. Based on the B2 Passat, the Chinese Santana is essentially a long-wheelbase Quantum, filling roughly the same role in PRC society that the Crown Victoria does in the US. In '91, the Santana was upgraded to Santana 2000 spec, and the Santana 3000 (the first car to be developed by Shanghai Volkswagen) followed in '04. Nevertheless the O.G. Santana remains on sale. One of our favorite bits about the Shanghai show is the sheer volume of heavy trucks parked in the outdoor courtyard. Dongfeng, China's second-largest automaker (founded at the behest of Mao hisowndamnself back in '68), had a googolplex of heavy truckage on display. It also featured spokesmodels wearing what appeared to be the exact dress our stupid-hot 1993 Homecoming date wore. Sadly, they were attempting to beat the heat by holding press materials over their heads. In our day, we have witnessed some interminable press events, but this one literally wandered so slowly off with the cake that we're not sure that the cake was there in the first place or if the thieves may actually have left it behind. The shebang started off in a promising manner, oddly enough; the Pudong Expo building a stunning, gleaming cube featuring a lobby stuffed with art. We were then treated to a short fashion show. All well and good. Suddenly, the mind-numbing madness came. A television personality named Cathy hosted a panel featuring a group of execs who, barring Audi/FAW's Werner Eichhorn, literally dullarded us out of the room. As one attendee noted, VW China Kopfk se Winfried Vahland is one of those boring people who has no idea how boring he actually is. They were joined onstage by Mo Huilan, silver medalist in the '96 Olympics on the womens' vault. The banter was bilingual and pedantic. After a rather mind-numbing trip that took roughly 16 hours longer than expected, we are here, esconced comfortably on the 81st floor of the Jin Mao Tower. Plus, the Huangpu River is rife with what appear to be the Chinese version of dekotora.
