Amusing, it's taken a little over two years but the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 has gone from a concept revealed on the show floor of the 2006 Detroit Auto Show to parking on the roof of Cobo during the 2008 SAE World Congress. This shiny red one was parked staring straight at the GM RenCen buildings almost like some bruiser looking for a fight with a Camaro. This one even has a little battle scar on the front passenger side fender to prove it can hang with the tough kids. More »

We keep telling you the robot wars are going to happen any day now, and you just don't listen. While this is more like some version of a robot dog nipping at your heels, we still don't know what the mechanical marvel is going to do with that ball when he catches his prey. Okay, we kid, we're pretty sure this is another one of those TARDEC toys (where do they get those marvelous gadgets?) paid for with your tax dollars, but it looks like it could throw down if properly equipped for robot war. More »

Back in the way off yonder, at least two of us on the Jalopnik staff spent time turning wrenches on an SAE car during college. These cars are nice reminder that the best engineers are the ones who wake up at one in the afternoon and still smell like Jager bombs. The SAE Collegiate Design Series is an effort to put classroom learning into practice by providing engineering competitions for students to work on. There are a range automotive groups to choose from including the Formula SAE, BAJA Challenge, and the now defunct Formula Lighting Series. Here at the 2008 SAE World Congress, the colleges are showing off their wares and proving that the heart of racing is still alive and well. More »

All the big names in defense are here today hawking their wares and Raytheon has an off road badass-mobile that practically begs to be flogged mightily. The Hybrid-Defense Recon Assault (HY-DRA) shows off some pretty neat tech (which actually is sort of the military version of the Chevy Volt). The HY-DRA is an EV with in-wheel motors, an on-board range extender, a sweet McLaren F1-style three seat layout, and a monster .50 caliber up top. Funny thing about that .50 cal, before they decided to go with the in-wheel motor design, they had inboard mounted motors and half shafts running out to the wheels. When fired perpendicular to the line of travel, the recoil from the gun would actually knock the HY-DRA on its side. Yeah, this is one instance where unpsrung weight and low center of gravity go well together. More »

Well, there you have it folks, batteries in the boot, basically all the proof you get this is a hybrid SUV because everything else hybridy is in the transmission. We also gathered the Scorpio diesel hybrid is intended for production, but dates and the possibility of US import were left up to the Mahindra folks. Aside from that bit of boring, we talked to the FEV folks a bit and got some information in conflict with our earlier reporting. We were wandering around Cobo at the 2008 SAE World Congress and trying to figure out where the heck the Mahindra Appalachian sporting a diesel electric hybrid powertrain was. More »

We just snapped off a couple of shots of the Mahindra Scorpio, the diesel-electric hybrid SUV we told you would be unveiled here at the 2008 SAE World Congress. Yes, it's before everything has opened to the engineering public. Yes, we may not have been officially allowed out on the floor. Yes, we probably broke a city statute or two in doing it, but no, rumors of any cash exchanging hands in the process are very much untrue. What is true is the hybrid diesel SUV from the sub-continent is the first of its kind for Mahindra and is being displayed in the stand of their development partner FEV. More »

Mahindra has just jointly announced with FEV that they'll be displaying their sub-continent-styled Mahindra Scorpio with a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain at the SAE World Congress this weekend here in Detroit. The system includes a 40 HP E-motor that works in stop/start, electric acceleration, and regenerative braking capacities — developing peak torque in the range of 200 lb-ft. The diesel engine is a 2.2-liter inline four with common rail injection, developing 113 HP mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Although no word on what this has to do with the Mahindra Appalachian we'd been told to look for this week at the SAE World Congress, or whether we'll be seeing this curry-flavored Indian import stateside, it at least looks like the hybrid SUV market is set to get mighty interesting. Press release below the fold and in case you're interested, the shot up top is a camino-ized version of the Scorpio they'll be showing off. So you probably shouldn't expect a truck bed. More »

Students at the University of British Columbia handily trounced competitors in this year's SAE Supermileage Competition, using their superior engineering kung-fu to achieve over 3,000 mpg in a car they designed and built. The competition pits smartypants against propellerhead to see who can best expand the efficiency of an internal combustion engine, and the UBC has won in four out of the six competitions it's entered. Employing principals of aerodynamics, weight reduction, and drawing on Canada's storied advancements in dildonics, the team thrusted to victory, despite a diminutive 54cc unit. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/182895/stick-your-fossil-fuel-eh-canadian-students-build-3145+mpg-car" title="Click here to read more about Stick Your Fossil Fuel, Eh? Today marks the start of the 101st Anniversary of the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress. The Congress, held each year in Detroit, is seen by many as one of the most authoritative glimpses on the world of automotive engineering, with literally hundreds of breakout sessions on exciting broad topics like "Automotive Lighting Technologies" and more minute areas of expertise like "Transmission and Drivelines (Part 1 of 8) Wet Friction Material and Torque Converter." Who are we kidding, for the majority of the world's population this is the most boring conference on the face of the earth. But, for hundreds of thousands of people involved in engineering the vehicles we love to drive, this conference is how they create the things that make those vehicles one of the most advanced pieces of manufactured technology most people will ever own. This year, for the 101st Anniversary, the SAE and local dealer Bavarian Motor Village, decided they would make things a bit more exciting...oh dear G-D, what does it mean when engineers want to make things more exciting? Well, it means a 101 car BMW MINI parade. We kid you not. We sent Wert down to cover the parade at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit, and he's brought back some exclusive video of the exciting conclusion of the <strike>matchbox</strike> <strike>clown car</strike> MINI parade: More »

The results are in for automakers using Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards for rating their cars' horsepower. And this is no good news for those of you who bought that Toyota Camry with the expectation of a hotter-than-hot-sake 210 hp. In reality, you may be feeling a bit like you just swallowed some raw shrimp, cause that hp just dropped down to a piddly 190. More »

Whoops. If you bought a 2006 Acura RSX, expect to get five fewer horsepower than the 2005 model. Buy an '06 Corvette LS7, however, and you'll gain an equal number over 2005. What happened? It seems Japanese automakers' overselling of their cars' horsepower was outed by their moving to the new, third-party horsepower standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in their marketing. The SAE recently changed its testing procedures to make the numbers more relevant to real-world use, not in ideal conditions. According to the Detroit News, Toyota and Honda are retesting their entire vehicle lineups, while other automakers are retesting only cars and trucks with updated powertrains. Will the nearly assured backlash among enthusiasts provide an image boost to struggling US carmakers? Or will no one really care? Seriously, we're asking — tips@jalopnik.com. More »
