We knew it was on the way, but the Cross-Wheel-Drive system which debuted on the 2008 Saab 9-3 Turbo X has been made available across the rest of the 9-3 lineup for 2009. The Haldex-sourced system provides on-demand all-wheel drive which can be shifted to the wheel with the greatest grip on the fly. XWD equipped cars start at $34,870 for a 9-3 2.0T XWD Sport Sedan to a starting price on the 9-3 Aero V6T XWD SportCombi of $43,165. A sharp-eyed guest at the 2008 Saab Owner's Convention snapped a nice photo of the design direction in which Saab claims to be taking the next 9-5. The new shape is much more aggressive than the current staid sedan from Trollhattan, and follows the oh-so-trendy four-door coupe styling arriving at dealer showrooms near you. General Motors has announced that it is cutting Saab out of the 5-year/100,000-mile GM powertrain warranty, instead saddling the Swedish brand with a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. In other words, Saab reliability is so poor that GM has to cut warranty coverage lest the resulting repairs push the automaker further toward bankruptcy? Not so, claims spokesperson Joanne Krell, who says the change "makes sense to the import premium buyer, which is where Saab fits in the automotive landscape." Uh huh. Every project manager in the automotive world will lose their minds at this revelation, given that traditionally, across all brands, bigger is always better. Yet forthcoming mid-size Saabs will be underpinned by the Delta platform rather than the larger Epsilon-2. The idea of a vibrant, interesting, exciting Midwestern city is somehow divorced from this 300 year old berg. The complete discounting of Detroit is a shame of culture and possibility.
