This is the first time we've seen the new 2009 BMW 7-Series posing next to two of its direct rivals, a Mercedes S-Class and a Jaguar XJ. We're not sure what the photo shoot of the luxury trio was for, but we're assuming it's for a buff book doing a luxury car snooze-fest. Some of you Mercedes-Benz experts may have taken one glance at the photo above and spluttered "1958? Why, any fool can see that's a 1959!" However, I swear I did my best to figure out the exact model year of this car. With the help of such sites as this one, I believe I've narrowed it down to 1958 or 1959 (the 220S was made from 1956 through 1959, and the bumper-mounted license-plate lights should mean it's from the last two years... unless it's had a junkyard bumper swap, of course). Anyway, regardless of year, this is the car that Mercedes-Benz aficionados consider the very first S-class. Autocar reports that Mercedes is planning to produce a hybrid version of its S-class sedan. Dubbed the S400 it combines a 279bhp V6 with a 20bhp electric engine, bringing total power to 299bhp with 277lb/ft of torque. It's expected the S400 will average about 27mpg, putting it slightly ahead of the Lexus LS600hL. The magazine goes on to speculate that the hybrid S-class will go on sale in mid-2009, shortly after a hybrid version of the ML SUV. [Via Autocar] More »

1.8 Liters, 240bhp, 295 lb/ft and 40mpg in a vehicle as heavy as an S-class. According to Mercedes, this is the future of gasoline engines. Featuring direct injection, a turbocharger, variable compression and a hybridized starter motor, the DiesOtto engine would be impressive with these features alone. The real innovation, however, is the controlled auto ignition, a combustion process similar to that of a diesel engine. No word yet on when it goes into production or in which vehicles it'll be used. Mercedes is making good on rumors it would show a droptop S-Class at the Detroit show in '07. It's called the Ocean Drive Concept, and, true to speculation, it's a cabrio version of the company's flagship S600, fitted with LED lamps and something called Airscarf, which blows warm air blows around passengers on cold days. Well-heeled lovers of things that come in fours (like fluted crystal glasses, calfskin desk sets and certain types of entertainment in Nevada) take note: The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has a new 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system. AutoWeek reported earlier this year that the new version of the system, which Merc's been selling here since 1990, is the first built in-house, and that it'll add only 159 lbs to company's weightiest sedan, compared with 200 lbs for the system's previous generation. Two V8 models are on the list, the S 500 4MATIC and S 450 4MATIC (out now), and one V6 diesel (coming in December), the S 320 CDI 4MATIC. More »

The folks at The Car Connection published another one of the gossipy renderings of the rumored Mercedes S-Class sedan convertible concept that's expected to appear at the Detroit show in early 2007. Don't get crazy, it's not really a spy shot, as TCC indicates in the headline — think of it as wishful Photoshopping. Ze volks at Auto Motor und Sport report Mercedes wants to bring a mild-hybrid version of its S-Class to market by 2008 (see Reuters story here). The production model would be an offshoot of the S 350 DIRECT HYBRID and BLUTEC HYBRID concepts the company presented at the Frankfurt motor show in 2005. Those cars employed a compact, high-torque electric motor integrated into the drivetrain of a direct-injection V6, though the market variants will likely involve additional fruits of a hybrid partnership with GM and BMW. Considering we've always had trouble with Teutonic coordinating conjunctions, we're relying on World Car Fans to translate details on Lorinser's new S Class tuner — the Lorinser S 06. First, an engine kit gives it a 30% boost in horsepower, owing to a modified exhaust manifold/catalytic converter unit and sundry hacking of the ECU computer — providing "improved combustion in the upper rotational speed range" — bringing horsepower to 298 for the 3.5-liter V6 and 420 for the 5-liter V8. Vmax for cars with either engine is uprated to 174 mph. A supercharged version is good for 516 hp and 205 mph. Or it comes with extra pants, we're not sure. More »

A strange bit of news from the jungen at Germany's Auto Motor und Sport today; Mercedes is reportedly working on a V12-powered S-Class cabrio concept that will premiere at the 2007 Detroit Motor Show. Other than that it could have the longest fabric roof in the industry, there aren't many details about the convertible. If all rumors are true, it could join a 300C cabrio among a new detail of four-door droptops at DaimlerChrysler. Either that, or someone's been dipping into that secret bottle of absinthe again. So for the introduction of their new flagship, zee Germans decided to show off an impressive demonstration of the radar system, which can actually bring the car to a full stop. It's a great idea, especially in low-visibility conditions like fog. The only problem is, the demonstration went horribly wrong. Like Hindenburg wrong, but without the fiery death. Later, it turns out that Mercedes knew the system didn't work and decided to fake it, but the driver failed to hit the brakes in time. Sounds fishy, but it's a good watch. Mercedes will have its next-generation 4Matic system — the first developed entirely in house — ready for serious S-Class action in the US by next winter, according to AutoWeek. The new system will be biased to the rear, with a 45/55 torque split, and is small enough that the company won't have to alter the chassis. The new system adds only 159 lbs to the car's weight, compared to around 200 lbs worth of clockworks for the previous system. The price of admission will be nearly the same, however, with the system adding $3,000 to the price of a base S-Class ($86,000). More »

The turbo-hungry tuner bots at Brabus have cooked up new evidence to prove the adage, "there's no replacement for displacement" (which, in the company's Google-translated press release, reads "nothing can replace displacement except more displacement"). The Brabus S V12 S Biturbo, which will make its first appearance at the Geneva show, is an overly juiced version of the Mercedes V12-powered S-Class W221, and possibly the world's fastest luxury sedan. In typical Brabus fashion, it's been upclocked with enough horsepower and torque to go from zero to next Thursday in under a minute (730hp and 974 lbs.-ft). Blame the performance on a bored-to-6.3-liter V12, intercooled twin turbos, custom intake and exhaust ports, new cams and other Brabus goodies. With an electronically limited top speed of 211 mph (zero to 62 mph in four seconds), it's definitely a sedan for the very, very late. More »

Remember the story of the crash-avoidance system demonstration that went awry on TV, causing three Mercedes S-Class models to blindly crash into each other? It turns out Mercedes officials knew the test wouldn't work, and so conspired with a journalist from Germany's AutoBild to pull it off for the cameras anyway. Those aftermarket technologists from way down by the River Saar, Carlsson, will unveil their newest Mercedes tuning job, the CK50, based on the 2006 S-Class, at the Essen motor show next month. On the performance side, the relatively mild engine kit boosts horsepower of the stock 5.5-liter V8 to 429 US (435 metric) and 443 ft.-lbs of torque, from 382hp and 391 ft-lbs. In the jewelry department, a tasteful set of skirts and spoilers (I think we've been to that bar) and the company's new 3/11 ultra-light wheels make up the outside adornments, while the interior can be done up in Alcantara and leather if Mr. Moneybags desires.
