This is the first image of the Volvo S60 Concept, set to debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Volvo is calling the concept a preview of the 2010 Volvo S60. Volvo had better be careful or people will completely forget about the nameplate's stodgy past as the S60 concept is almost beautiful beyond belief. It takes on one of the final remaining traditional Volvo design elements, those normally straight, strong shoulder lines running font to back are reinterpreted in a curvaceous, smooth, sinewy line. The headlights are swept up and back and the roof line at the C-pillar is combined with the line of the trunk lid similar to what we've seen in the latest S40. Obviously the giant wheels and crystalline center stack mentioned won't make it to production and the suicide doors don't really jive with Volvo's safety mantra, but holy damn that's a beautiful car. According to the boys at Motive, rumors of the demise of the Volvo S60 may be premature, especially when you consider it's the top-selling sedan from the Swedish automaker. Of course you've got to keep in mind Volvo's run by Ford (for the moment anyway), the same company that killed their own top-selling sedan, the Taurus, so we guess anything's possible. But, Motive's got a point in wondering if maybe the Swedish meatball with the most to fear is the S60's smaller brother, the S40. We guess we'll have to wait and see. [Motive] More »

A quick-on-the cameraphone reader caught what appears to be a Volvo prototype headed south on I-275 outside of Detroit — likely North Carelton. It's the same route Michigan troops followed on their way down to battle the Ohioans in the battle of Toledo, which may be significant in a manner we're not yet aware (those engineers are a clever sort). Still, it's hard to tell from the rear (and from the white-out paint scheme), but this tester may very well be the next-generation S60, reportedly set for the 2008 model year. We'll keep manning the fort's lookout for more info. More »
