The last time I blew past the limits of my driving ability in a big howling V8 and hooned into a turn way too fast, I was at Altamont Speedway and I spun out in a most dramatic fashion. Now I'm in a car worth 110 times as much, leadfooting it down the hill at Infineon, right at the Chute, and I'm totally into that mighty V8 scream, and… oh shit! Brake! BRAAAAKE! And damn if the brakes on this thing don't get the job done. This experience pretty much sums up what the STaSIS S5 Challenge is all about; if you're a great driver, you'll find the limits are very high. If, like me, you wield more enthusiasm than finesse behind the wheel, the brake and suspension upgrades can avert total disaster. More »

The 2009 Audi A5 Convertible, the latest in a long line of four-seat Audi soft tops, appears to have gotten a bit of an early unveil thanks to a photo leak onto the net. The most notable feature is the canvas roof, bucking the hard-on-top trend made popular by Mercedes, BMW, Lexus IS250C and Infiniti G37 Convertible by going soft up top. This means less weight, less complication and more trunk space. But it’s not this model we’re excited about. No, we're excited because there’s a 2009 Audi S5 Cabrio too.

A report at Fourtitude says highly placed sources are stating the pending B8 Audi RS4 and the first edition of the Audi RS5 will be sporting a massaged version of the 4.2-liter V8 currently in the RS4 and R8. We love how Audi just can't stop themselves with the new models. 18 new ones in the coming years is the official company line. Here's one: Looking like the unholy offspring of an A3, a Dodge Magnum and a Mercedes-Benz CLS, somehow this rendering S5 looks pretty good to our wagon loving eyes. Sure, the A4 Avant and A6 Avants are fine cars. No, to our knowledge their will not be an A5 sedan. Why then an A5 station wagon Sportback? Meine Brüder, why the hell not? The Audi with Italian passion in red was unveiled to a well dressed New York crowd last night. The photographer for the new ad campaign explained why square digital pixels could not capture the true curvy detail of the S5, and why she used film instead. Famous chef David Bouley served up shot glasses half full of cream of mushroom soup. Impossibly tall waitresses served up some manner of organic cocktail which leveraged key core competency moving into the gala evening. So Car writers aren't sure whether or not this black-on-black Audi S5 is an RS5 prototype being flogged ahead of an auspicious release in Frankfurt. But the mag's sources say the BMW M3 coup fighter is most definitely in the works. The tipoff that this may indeed be the RS5 is the array of test equipment arrayed on the S5, which is already a done deal. Could be a last-minute production shakedown? GENEVA — Audi's former chief designer Walter d'Silva told the gathered mob here the Audi A5 is the most beautiful car he's designed in his career. We're inclined to agree, considering the original Alfa 156 hasn't aged as well as we thought it would. Nonetheless, it can't be underestimated what an achievement the A5/S5 is in this age when designers generally have no clue what to do with a two-door model that's not a supercar. Sometimes I feel like marketing a new car is kind of like making sausage. Sure, the end product looks like it could taste great, but you just know the process to get there is messy. And what about actually knowing what's in it — forget about it! But basically, it's the job of the marketing team at an automaker to make that sausage look as inviting as possible in the hope you ignore how it got there and what little bits n' pieces you'll find inside. Sometimes it's by dressing it up with pretty colors and all the available options (now in leather!) but apparently it's also about the lighting. That's what we've determined after seeing this picture that's accidentally made its way on to the Audi media site. It's what looks to be the same picture we've got up here — except they didn't quite crop it correctly, leaving in the bits n' pieces that help to make the new Audi S5's interior look as bright and shiny as it does in all of the PR shots. The impact may have been lessened by last week's leak, but today the company let fly with official info on the Nuvolari-inspired A5 and S5. Maybe today's release was already on the schedule. Nonetheless, we now know the European A5 will get a range of engines from the 1.8-liter TFSI producing 170 hp to the 3.2 FSI producing 265 hp, to a choice of two oil burners (2.7 TDI at 190 hp and 3.0 TDI at 240 hp). Insiders are split on whether the S model will debut alongside the A5 at the Geneva show next month.
