Each seems to feel real physical pain when some controllable element of their surroundings does not glow with an aura of quality design. Furniture, clothing, appliances, and so on- you're not going to see El Cheapo crap unless it's an ironic statement of some kind. Such a person will always have a Macintosh computer, and the car in the driveway will likely be German. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, of course, since pro designers are naturally drawn to attractively designed objects, but it's an easily observed phenomenon. While shooting some Engine Pr0n of the Audi RS4, and then later for the Lexus IS-F, I was struck by the differing design philosophies on display in the cars' respective engine compartments. Back in June we told you that the RS4 Sedan was going out of production. Then, later in June, we explained that actually, no, Audi would keep building the RS4. Today's news is a bit of clarification. In November of this year (2007) Audi will stop building the RS4 Sedan. The convertible and the motherluvin' Avant will cease production at some point in 2008. How the hell ever, the RS4 Avant is, well, the RS4 Avant. You know, perfect in that Bruce kinda way. Plus, the Audi's hot 4.2-liter FSI V8 makes 420 horses. With the new A4 appearing this fall atop Audi's oft ballyhooed modular architecture, the current RS4 will be shelved. A new RS4, based on the updated A4 and sporting what could total 450 horsepower, will appear at the end of 2008. Since the RS4 droptop is going to be so rare, there aren't any options. That means you get stuff like bi-xenon adaptive headlamps, front and rear seat heaters, an iPod hookup in the glove and all the tacky carbon fiber interior bits found in the sedan are replaced with (somehow) more tasteful brushed aluminum pieces. Plus, you know, the top comes down and the only thing between you and the sound of that glorious 4.2-liter FSI V8 engine is the hood and a little windshield. OK, OK, here's the bad news. The price starts at $81,900. And there's a $775 destination charge. As well as a yet to be determined gas-guzzler tax. Which is a $15,000 premium over the four-door. So hot are these cars, that I don't even need to mention names. Which we still find odd, as Germany's other luxury automobile has long been the official car of architects, graphic designers and therapists, not tail-out, tire-smoking hoons. But the cars speak for themselves. Or rather, the lustful, sinful, Pope-angering 4.2-liter FSI V8 they share speaks for them. The RS4 is a true giant killer, stealing the formula first developed for the E39 M5 and improving upon it in every way. And of course the R8 is the new girl who transfers into the 11th grade, upsetting and turning the hot chick pecking order on its head (we still reserve the right to think it's funny looking). But in each car, it is the engine and the engine alone that elevates these cars into the stratosphere. Automobile Magazine placed both of them on a dynometer and we couldn't be less surprised by the results. The dry-sumped, smaller flywheel R8 revs a bit quicker and puts down 7 more horsepower (338 hp vs. 331in the RS4) at the wheels. However, the "when I grow up I wanna be a freight train" RS4 makes a little more torque a whole lot lower down in the revs: 276 lbs. ft. @ 3,750 rpm for the 4-door, 275 lbs. ft. @ 5100 for the dolphin head coupe. – Jonny Lieberman More »

Chris Bokich, my new boss and former A3/A4/A5/RS4 product manager for the US says this is completely untrue. There will be a full build of the 2008 model year RS4 sedan, and production is still continuing. We have stated before that the RS 4 will have a 2-yr model run, 2008 being that second year.
First, we love that Audi people can't even get the RS4/RS 4 thing straight. Second, A WOP BOPA LOO BOP A LOP BAM BOOM! The only sad part is that there will be no RS4 for 2009. Apparently, there is a never an overlap of RS models. Which means that either the Gallardo-engined R8 ubermensche won't be called RS8, or with over 900,000 vehicles sold last year, things are cha-cha-cahing at Audi. Why? According to the lads at Autocar.co.uk, Audi is killing off their best car ever to make room for the upcoming twin-turbo V10 RS6, which bows in Frankfurt this September. Apparently Audi is concerned that keeping the RS4 around will hurt sales of the RS6. Which is insane. Case in point, they will continue building the RS4 Avant and Convertible. Just yesterday we were reading in GoAuto.com how BMW Group Australia's managing director Guenther Seemann doesn't consider Audi a threat. At first were thought it was just typical slick corporate PR. But if our British brothers are right, if Audi is too insecure to sell both the RS4 and RS6 side by side, then I am afraid Herr Seemann has something besides a tragic last name. He has a point. Also of course, no word whatsoever if Audi is bringing the RS4 Avant to the States. But because of the brewhaha about a crash-test issue with battery placement, they probably won't. E39 M5 Or RS 4?]]> Once again, Herr Johnson and I managed to spend five hours arguing with each other over instant messenger. Only this time we were not half-joking about DAF vs. FAF, but rather quite seriously calling each other soulless turds over which legendary German Q-ship is better. In the Ingolstadt corner, weighing in at 3,800 or so pounds, Audi's hyperactive precision machine, the RS 4. And from south of the Black Forest, weighing 150 pounds more and making 26 hp less, the car that God would drive if he drove a car, the BMW E39 M5! Davey said that the RS 4 was numb, had rotten seats and a compromised chassis. I pointed out that the RS 4 is lighter, more powerful, grippier, has a better gearbox and is even more stealth. Plus, the RS 4 handles like a very, very wet dream. He explained how the old M5 has a perfect chassis. I said the RS 4's is more perfect. He called me a jerk. I called him a tool. For the ninth year in a row Engine Technology International Magazine has presented their International Engine of the Year Award. In 2005 BMW took down 6 wins, including the (possibly) coveted International Engine of the Year. In 2006, the Bavarians only managed to win 5 awards (Volkswagen's 1.4-liter twin charger jumped up and bit their ankles in the (maybe) hotly contested 1-liter to 1.4-liter category), but once again, the M5's 5-liter V10 took top honors. Again. This year? Once again BMW took down 6 of the 11 awards, but best engine honors did not go to their mighty V10. Instead, the twin-turbo straight-6 from the 335i took top honors. Remember, even though BMW says the thing only makes 300 horses, that mill actually kicks out 350 hp. Los Jalopers? We'd still rather have the 4.2 out of the RS4. I mean for real, this is so something we expect to see from the General, not so much the highly precise automaker. That's because we have an expectation of the requirement of the issuance of a press release on a new color from the sometimes-number-one automaker because it's such a big and lumbering beast of burden — so even the smallest change in direction's got to be trumpeted up and down the block. But we don't expect the Teutonic knights of Bruce to stoop to such levels as an announcement on the new "Phantom Black" and "Ibis White" paint finishes. But whatevs, they have — so we'll give you the full release after the jump and let you determine for yourself the level of importance of a color change via the comments. According to one unnamed product planner, the book may not be closed on a US version. No similar ghost of a chance for the RS4 Avant, you wagoneers. A 420-hp Avant won't be coming to the parking lot of a stateside IKEA near an urban center anytime soon. More »
