This marks the first time the NHRA has given the nod to an aftermarket powertrain; previous competition powertrains had to be as-delivered by the manufacturer. Depending on configuration and bodystyle, the Roush Mustangs will be classified between AA Stock and B Stock or SuperStock A and F. Look for the first Roush car coming from Haas, Carrothers & Wagner Racing; the team won three consecutive NHRA Division 3 championships from 2004-2006, and they're currently building a Roush Mustang with a Stage 3TM powertrain. It's the 428R*, an homage to the 428 Cobra Jet mustang of 1968-1970. Limited to 200 vehicles, the 428R* sports 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, by way of Roush's ROUSHcharger supercharger setup, done up in chrome powdercoat. Other engine-bay jewelry include billet radiator and intercooler caps, oil cap, and strut tower caps. Roush calls it the "Nitemare" and they've given the standard cab Toby Keith man-truck an upgraded look and performance with their patented ROUSHcharger system, boosting the 5.4-liter 3 valve engine to 445 hp and 500 ft-lb of torque. In addition, they've upgraded the intake manifolds, intercooler, radiator and air induction systems to send as much air as possible into the big engine while simultaneously adding a few more mph to the top of the engine via boosting the speed governor to 105 mph. Roush is offering the Nitemare only in black for 2007, and they're limiting the matte black beast of hauling burden to just 100 units. If for some reason you're not happy with what Roush has set up for you, don't worry — you'll have all sorts of options on this black-as-night Clydesdale — like a rear wing, hood scoop, locking lug nuts and GPS system. It seems Melling, who's created engines for Lola (no, not the transvestite) and TVR, has said he's been working to build a whole car, powered by a 700hp V10, to take on the Aston Martins of the world. According to the Rochdale Observer, he's pretty far along. He recently showed off the Hellcat (above) to reporters (with, apparently, really small cameras). Melling says the front-engined, rear-drive car has a carbon fiber monocoque body and chassis (it weighs a total of around 2700lbs) and indeed has the promised V10, which propels it from zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds — topping out around 200 mph. It'll cost in the $190,000 range, and Melling has already contracted with Roush in the US to build 100 cars per month. Yep, this just might work. More »
