Report: GM CEO Mary Barra Got An Email About Steering Recall In 2011

In trying to find out what GM knew and when about the various recalls announced this year, there's now information showing CEO Mary Barra received an email about steering problems in the company's vehicles back in 2011.

This is according to Reuters, which reported this afternoon the findings of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Among one of the points was an email sent to Barra in 2011 reporting problems with the electric power steering in several GM models like the Chevrolet Malibu and Saturn Ion.

Those cars were involved in a March 31 recall on 1.3 million GM cars, including some models of the Chevy Cobalt, Saturn Ion and other cars affected by the big ignition recall.

The steering recall and the ignition recall that's been the center of attention are two different matters. But if Barra knew about a problem three years before a recall was actually issued, it could prove the that the "culture of cover-up" some legislators have suggested is alive and well at GM.
