Today is the final day of production for the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Once the shining star and gotta-have Chrysler of the moment, the much-neglected PT has finally been put to rest. Though we're fairly sure that the PT Cruiser is out after the 2009 model year, with no further signs of life, the drafters over at Auto Motor Und Sport went ahead and penned some futuristic versions of a next-generation PT Cruiser that no one's expecting, ever. Maybe Ze Germans are just having some fun, as is their way, or maybe no one told them that they no longer own a majority share in Chrysler. Whatever the reason, it's an interesting look at resurrecting a once surprisingly popular model created by Americans and completely abandoned...as is our way. Chrysler revealed its latest special edition vehicle ahead of this Saturday's Woodward Dream Cruise this morning at Duggan's Irish Pub on Woodward Avenue — the 2009 Chrysler PT Dream Cruiser Series 5. As the name suggests, it's the 5th version of the PT Cruiser to be revealed at the Woodward Dream Cruise. And, like the others, this one offers up all the same PT Cruiser features and options 1.3 million people have found when snapping one up, all while wearing a very serious billet grille. The rest of the car's got a two-tone paint job to go along with the substantial bug-smasher (seriously, it's thicker than any aluminum grille we've ever seen), with tone #1 being the brightest white ever available on a PT and tone #2 giving it a sort of mutated Mini Cooper look. Additionally, the PT Cruiser 5 gets Neon SRT-4 wheels with a new finish, fancy synthetic material on the seats and... er... a Dream Cruiser badge. Press release and more pics below. We're going to go toss back a breakfast whiskey at Duggan's just to calm ourselves after all of this excitement. More »

Since we put out the word that justice can be purchased at the 24 Hours of LeMons South, some teams became quite innovative about the methods used to make sure that the Bullshit Inspection judges take a reasonable approach to the determination of car value. Taping $5 bills under the hood certainly gets our attention! More »

We've seen plenty of ridiculous customizations, but this one has got to be one of the craziest. As if starting life out as a PT Cruiser wasn't bad enough, it has since been re-sculpted with some sort of alien popping out of the front. Just looking at the photos, we can only imagine how much time it took to create this monstrosity, but why? What could possibly lead you to thinking this would be a good idea? More »

While we're not quite so disinclined towards the little faux-retro econoboxes ourselves, a writer over at BrooWaha makes a fairly convincing case for the theory that the "PT Cruiser has murdered taste and massacred better judgement, all the while asphyxiating our culture's collective memory." There's a new owner at the Chrysler Group, but the gameplan's the same for their celebration of the Woodward Dream Cruise — the reveal of another Chrylser PT Cruiser special edition. This new version of the 2008 PT Cruiser, dubbed the "Sunset Boulevard Edition," represents the eleventh factory-customized limited-edition of the little retro rod, and the Chrylser Group says it's designed to bring "bling to the Boulevard." Or at least to Woodward Avenue we guess. We've no pictures of it yet, but fear not — we'll be there at 8:30 this morning to bring you some live shots of the reveal in person. For the time being, the full press release is below the jump. For the rest of our Woodward Dream Cruise coverage — hit the tag page here, and drop your own pictures into our live gallery here. More »

Even If Daimler Doesn't Want It Anymore, Chrysler Still Thinks It's "Engineered Beautifully"

Despite the fact the German side of the German-American hybrid no longer wants anything to do with the 'merican side, the 'mericans are still trying to feel pretty inside. That's why they've released a set of four new ads touting their vehicles as being "engineered beautifully." That phrase apparently is the distillation of the fact that "...at its core, the Chrysler brand stands for stylish products, agile performance, refined quality and the confidence of being proud without being arrogant." Well, considering the fact that they're now seen as being Daimler-Benz's little whipping boy, I somehow don't know how much I agree with the fact that they're looking all that "proud" now, much less "arrogant." And don't even get us started on "agile performance" and make us bring up the new Sebring. But whatever it takes this jilted lover to get through the day, you know? Full release below the jump. – Ray Wert <a href="http://jalopnik.com/258508/even-if-daimler-doesnt-want-it-anymore-chrysler-still-thinks-its-engineered-beautifully" title="Click here to read more about Even If Daimler Doesn't Want It Anymore, Chrysler Still Thinks It's "Engineered Beautifully"">More »

Although it doesn't yet have a name — just an internal code designation at the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid — we've heard from the kids over at Allpar that it may be called the "Crew." We've no idea, but we do know the site all about the Mopar-love claim to have the scoop, being the first to buy the Priddy pics. Here's what they're saying about what Priddy's spy shooter saw:
"The top photo is from a "blind" drive clinic in Southern California; it shows the JC49 to be built in Toluca, based on the Chrysler Sebring platform, with production scheduled for December 2007. Chrysler may eventually get a version of this vehicle, which might or might not be called the PT Cruiser; it's scheduled for about 25% of the production total, and would have completely different sheet metal..."
<a href="http://jalopnik.com/246917/spy-photos-dodge-jc49-crew-crossover" title="Click here to read more about Spy Photos: Dodge JC49 "Crew" Crossover">More »

Way down under in a country boasting a town called "Tittybong," Drive.com.au speculates on a "black blob" fielded by the Chrysler organization. It's the weird crossover we've been seeing in the states, but about which we had little info. Now, spies say it's the artifice-free replacement for the Chrysler PT Cruiser, which will come in a Dodge version and sport a 3.5-liter V6. So long nostalgic references to days past. We hardly knew ye. (Screw you, Lassa; you probably knew this all along. You insider, you.) – Mike Spinelli <a href="http://jalopnik.com/244480/spy-photos-black-blob-chrysler-to-replace-pt-cruiser" title="Click here to read more about Spy Photos: "Black Blob" Chrysler to Replace PT Cruiser?">More »

The shooters at KGP have snapped shots of a crossover vehicle we've heard is code-named JC49 — it's a vehicle which will supposedly be built on the frame of the new Sebring/Avenger platform. Where what we've heard has diverged from what others are saying is on what market the new CUV (plus its potential Chrysler-branded cousin, which apparently has a similarly alphanumeric name — the JZ49) is heading for. The people at the ever-curvaceous Road claim it's meant to fight off the Toyota Highlander and Ford Edge on these shores — but we've heard it's to be built out of the Toluca, Mexico plant that's currently building PT Cruisers, and that it's meant to fight MPV's from a broad-range of competitors across the pond in Europe. It may be part of the Chrysler Group's plans to fight them over there while making cars that aren't selling over here — or something like that. – Ray Wert More »

We're all pretty excited here in Motown about our beloved Detroit Tigers. It's been 22 years since we've been to the classic of fall classics, the World Series — and people have gone so cracker-jack crazy over our "boys" — DaimlerChrysler decided it'd be a good idea to get a piece of that PR action themselves. The German-American hybrid's paired themselves up with local NBC affiliate WDIV, and gone and redecorated their <strike>lame-mobile</strike> PT Cruiser in full ballgame uniform — minus cleats. The result is a car they've named the "WDIV Tigers Cruiser" that for this week and next, even we'd be pleased as punch to call our own. Knowing the Chrysler folks, this'll probably end up becoming next year's Woodward Dream Cruise Edition PT. Carmakers have been building California edition cars since the Governator was just a seed in the pocket of some Austrian's brownish shirt. Now, as Wert found out — he's prowling around metro Detroit, looking for a free press luncheon and a nice cabernet — Chrysler's building a limited edition PT Cruiser with a West Coast theme. It's the 2007 PT Street Cruiser Pacific Coast Highway Edition, which is an homage to that famous route along the ocean; both killer of Ferrari Enzos and purveyor of spectacular scenery. Chrysler's already done the Route 66 edition; we're still waiting for the Long Island Expressway edition. UPDATE: Wert and part-time volunteer Jalopnik buddy James LaMoreaux snapped some pics of the reveal and voila — photo gallery! More »

This one kid named Brendan's been dropping us e-mails for weeks with tip after tip. And every time we've had to shoot them down with comments like "nope, done that" or "nope, photoshopped" or "nope, someone else dropped us that one like a minute earlier" — until this. We don't even know how this one slipped our attention, but we're totally glad young Brendan sent this culmination of all PT Cruiser customizations our way — and yes Brendan, you'll be getting that golden ticket you've been looking for. Take a gander at PTeazer's PT-amino — and revel in it's Neon-framed goodness. More »

 Why you shouldn
t buy this car: With the top down, the PT Convertible looks a bit like a bathtub with a handle. The PT chop top is also so not a driver
s car. Although plenty quick and flat through the turns, the front-driver has more body flex than Mr. Universe. The cruising range is limited by the small gas tank and the rear visibility is restricted by that baby pram cover perching on the rear deck. More »

Some people swear by convertibles. I swear at them. There are few things more painful than trying to drive a car with a blazing sun frying your bald spot in the middle of a howling gale of humid air, and most of them are banned by The Geneva Convention. Now that autumn
s here, I
m feeling slightly more charitable toward the whole drop top shtick. The fortuitous arrival of a Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible GT certainly helped elevate my genetically handicapped top-down tolerance levels. It
s a feel good machine of Prozacian proportions. More »
