Though the 2009 Porsche Boxster may appear to have received only a light visual refresh, limited to a few slightly tweaked lines and some LED lights from its big brother, the internals have received enough attention to launch the Boxster from hairdresser-chic to something the performance-minded could consider. The PDK double-clutch should provide a quick alternative for those unwilling or uninterested in doing the shifting themselves. Power also gets an upgrade to 255 and 310 HP in the base unit and the Boxster S, respectively. Perhaps most important of all, the new Porsche will likely have an optional limited slip differential for those that are inclined towards driving somewhere more challenging than the Palm Beach Mall parking lot. Porsche has dropped photos of the 2009 Porsche Boxster and the changes on the inside are thankfully more dramatic than the exceedingly minor facelift. The base Boxster now comes equipped with a 2.9-liter direct injection mill pumping out 255 hp, up 10 hp from the previous generation. In S-trim the 3.4-liter unit, now with direct fuel injection, is good for 310 hp. The biggest news may be the PDK double-clutch über gearbox which provides better fuel economy (north of 26 mpg) and quicker acceleration than the six-speed manual. Autoweek.nl has gotten their hot little Dutch mitts on images they claim are the freshened-up faces of the new Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster. If these shots are in fact the real thing, then changes seem to be limited on the exterior to the shape of the front bumpers below the headlights, the tail lamps getting a bit more curvy and the exhaust going twin exit rather than single. To be perfectly honest, if we woke up to a facelift like this, we'd probably smack the surgeon. Of course that may be because the curve on the bumper below the headlight seems wholly unnatural, but maybe that's just us. We'll be waiting to see if these are the real deal shots or just something Autoweek.nl created themselves. More »

Finnish radio station "NRJ" has done what many Porche 911-o-philes only dream of: They destroyed a Porsche Boxster in spectacular fashion. The station held a contest to determine whether to give away or destroy the baby Porsche, and 56 percent of the voters decided the Boxster was marked for death. NRJ decided the best way to carry out the execution was to drop the car from a 100-foot crane, ass-first. The resulting collision was the equivalent of a hitting a wall at 54 MPH. In reverse. Ouch. We went to the Porsche event with high hopes of amazing unveils for the never before seen Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder, Porsche RS Spyder, Porsche Cayenne GTS and Porsche 911 GT2. Imagine our disappointment when we got there and realized we've seen them all before, unlike the Porsche press release had implied. About the most exciting part of the whole event was the Boxster ice sculpture, with Porschemisu. They did manage to redeem themselves by encouraging us to "Have a little taste of Porsche" with the little birthday cakes - it's Porsches 50th anniversary this year. We didn't taste the cakes, because we don't know what Porsche tastes like, though we assume concentrated Bruce tastes like oil, aluminum, und schteel. More »

Porsche just dropped a presser on us which has us scratching our heads. Any time we read words like "Porsche" and "First" and "Shown" in a press release, we expect the things contained therein to be, you know, Porsches being shown for the first time. In this case, that's maybe only partially true. In breathless verbiage, we're told all about the amazing new Porsche Cayenne GTS, Porsche 911 GT2, Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder and the racing Porsche RS Spyder. Problem is we've already seen the Porsche Cayenne GTS and the Porsche 911 GT2 in the flesh, the Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder has been both on the web and boring for nigh on three and a half months. And it would be a shock if the Porsche RS Spyder which has already won more races than we care to count wasn't pretty well known. Hollywood loves a good car chase and has, over the years, created certain conventions that are normally followed. Car chases almost always wind their way through crowded streets, over fruit carts/stands and within inches of certain danger. Apparently, Bollywood has its own car chasing/racing schtick: newsstand instead of fruit cart, open highways instead of narrow streets and, not surprisingly, dancing instead of danger. We were born with an inability to trust salespeople, the fact they're trying to sell something you probably don't need is more than likely the root of this distrust. Fresh from Germany is a perfectly good example of something totally ludicrously ridiculous. The watch, jewelery, and interior decoration company of Schmuckwelten in Pforzheim, Germany has come up with a way to make a duo of Porsches seem utterly undesirable - cover them in gold and tchachkies. Is there something about an old 911 or a new Boxster that just screams "cover me with gold leaf" or "bedazzle my exhaust tip"? You'd think this kind of thing would be a hangin' offense in Germany. The kiddos from Stuttgart have something special in mind for the Bologna Auto Show. Unlike some automakers we could think of, Porsche doesn't come out with special editions every other day so it's kind of special when they do. Inspired by Porsche's victory at the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, the Boxster RS 60 Spyder Limited Edition pays homage to the winning Type 718 RS in a number of ways. The Silver Metallic paint and Carrera Red interior is your most obvious hint, unless you're sitting in the passenger seat and you notice the plaque on the dash. You might also notice the 19-inch SportDesign alloy wheels and a unique front spoiler. Internally, the modified Boxster gets a new exhaust with unique dual tailpipes that boost the output of the flat-six to 303 horsepower. Porsche's Active Suspension Management is included and will help you fling all that extra style around the track (or country club).
