@InfinitisEnd: Loeb's spider-sense, honed in his years as a gymnast started going crazy as he saw the Finn's car waggling in his peripheral vision. He's just that awesome.
I just put 400 trouble-free miles on my Alfa GTV6 in two consecutive weekends. As long as you do preventative maint. and drive the car, it's very reliable. The Porsche 944 is also supposed to be pretty darn reliable as well. You can't fault the car what bad owners do to them..
He wants to be the David Pogue of cars. Writing in a non-specialist publication for a non-specialist audience. Demystifying things for the WSJ reader with a wad of cash who can't decide what trophy car to buy so he can drive out to the Hamptons on the LIE. What a waste...
The Alfa GTV6 and the Porsche 944 are by far the best sports cars out there for under 5K. You can get a GTV6 in great running order for as little as 3500 bucks! It's criminal how undervalued they are. I should know, as I own one myself! And PS, they can get as much as 30mpg.
@Michael Czeiszperger: I disagree respectully, Michael. The Porsche was designed specifically for road courses like the Nurburgring or Road Atlanta. By refusing to race them on such a course, it proves nothing about whatever claim of superiority that Mini wants to have. Autocross courses don't have high speed bends, or require extreme braking power, nor do they reward top end speed. These are all areas where the Mini can't hold a candle to the Porsche. So forgive us for criticizing Mini for trying to stack the deck.
@osbjmg: I think they have the cars starting in opposite directions to spare themselves the sight of the Porsche's superior acceleration just demolishing the Mini every single time off the line.
I don't know about BEST overall, but I still think the original Audi TT will never be improved on from a design point of view. And the same with the original Miata. In both cases, the re-designs ruined the purity of the original car. As far as BEST overall, you gotta put the Ford Mustang up there as an out of the box champion in sales and design, though it did get better in the second and third versions.
The Mini is the most over-rated car of the decade. I have driven them on several occasions and not seen what the fuss was about. Especially when it comes to the cartoon interior and horrible visibility out of that welder's mask windshield. Little things like the poor radio control layout, cheap paddle shifters, irksome turn signal stalk, and unreadable flava-flav sized speedo make me never want to drive one again no matter how good the handling might be. The Mini is a toy, and the Porsche is a precision instrument. Porsche was right to say no. Also, i think a Cayman would hand the mini its ass even on that small track.
