I run the Q9m right now and I'd say it's one of the best phones I've ever had - and I've had a lot of smart phones. I was considering upgrading to the Blackberry World, but I'm not a huge fan of the OS and the lack of camera kills it for me. This on the other hand has a 2 MP camera, which is nice, and adds the WiFi for good measure. I'm not sure why anyone would think that this is any worse than the new Blackberry Bold.

And speaking of Blackberry, is that a trackball on the new Q?

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Hydroelectric Bucket Will Gladly Help You Miss the Point of Camping]]> @GiltProto: yes, but to get over a thousand watts you need to have 200 ft. drop - Niagara Falls isn't even 200ft! Ok, granted Niagara isn't know for being particularly tall, and according to the chart you pointed out 100 ft with the proper flow will also get 1kw, but still not many folks live next to that kind of drop. For those that do, I'm sure that it's a great option.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on 2009 Nissan GT-R Priced At $69,850, On Sale July 7]]> I love it, and the price is definitely right. If I were spending real dollars, not just FG dollars, I'd be torn between this and the more refined but less powerful Porsche. But that's just because I'm old. If I were 26 again, I'd go for the GT-R. But then, I wouldn't have the $80k.. oh the irony of sports cars - you can only afford them if you're a young rich prick or an old fart.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Nokia Releases Supernova Range of Cellphones. Supersmashinglovely]]> @Alluvian: you do know that Nokia is far and away the worlds largest manufacturer of mobile phones, right? They have something like 40% of the market globally, compared to their next competitor at 13%. Apple (if that's what you're referring to) doesn't even have 1%. And their phones (some of them) run Symbian, which is the leading "smart" OS at more than 60% market share (closest competition at 13%, again) and it's own widely adopted SDK.

]]>
<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Nokia Releases Supernova Range of Cellphones. Supersmashinglovely]]> Pretty phones. I'm sure the ladies will love 'em. But why make a phone so big with a screen so small? All that bezel around that is just wasteful. Who will think about the bezel plants of Brazil? Eventually they'll be none left if Nokia keeps using them all up. And of course the price will go up before then to like $150 a bezel, and they'll be bezel shortages, famine, and war. Nobody wants to see that. Save the bezel!

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on iPhone Getting a Free iTunes Remote Control App]]> It's a great idea, and I'd happily buy in to the scheme if the Airport Express wasn't so bloody expensive. A free app is great, but if it requires a $99 piece of hardware to do anything, it's not really free...

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Garmin Announces a New, Improved Astro GPS Dog Collar]]> @ANoel: to be fair, most dog owners (like myself) wouldn't dare let their dog roam but accidents do happen and when they do, having a GPS would be a godsend. My landlord once let my dog escape when I was at work and I was very lucky to have someone find her and bring her back. I'm not saying this the perfect device, but I can tell you that when it gets to be small enough to not be terribly noticeable, and has better battery life, I'm buying one.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Which Car Would Be Your Ideal Office?]]> Solar powered Westfalia for me!

]]>
<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Hoser Runs Self Over With Remote Starter]]> @NICKNICK: I agree. I've never understood remote starts for 95% of the people who use them. That said, in very cold places it is actually necessary to start the car and let it reach a good temperature before driving it, otherwise it can damage the engine. Ontario strikes me as the kind of place where that might be necessary at some point during the year, but not in June.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Dyson Pursuing Electric Cars UPDATED]]> @ArielZusya: I'm not sure that you're using the term "passive solar" correctly. My understanding of passive solar is that it means using solar power for heat. Active solar would be needed to break apart H from O, using solar panels to create electricity and then electricity to produce hydrogen through electrolysis. That may solve an issue of energy storage, since the hydrogen has a higher energy density than most batteries, and there's much less weight involved, but it doesn't make it easier to produce. If anything, it probably reduces efficiency because you'd be converting solar to electric to chemical, back to electric, and then to mechanical.

@SilenceisGolden: um, already been done.

As for Dyson doing work with electric vehicles, sure, why not? Whether it's a calculated marketing ploy or not, he certainly seems to be one of those rare genius inventors like Kamen who can contribute to a number of different technologies. And if it had four of those omnidirectional yellow wheels, how cool would that be?!

Gimme a break. This thing looks like a disaster. Aside from the 3.2MP camera, there's nothing likable about this. I will never buy another phone that doesn't have an honest-to-goodness operating system and access to 3rd party apps. If this thing had Symbian, Windows Mobile or even Palm OS, it might be another story.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Bloomberg Creates "No-Car Zone" In Manhattan, Reveals Anti-Auto War Of Aggression]]> @wagonmonster: unless you're handicapped, a parent with a stroller, carrying large shopping bags, need to get to the vet... hmmm, come to think of it, maybe there is a reason to have a car (or at least car service in New York.

I was all in favor of congestion pricing, and the idea of a traffic-free Manhattan certainly is appealing. I'd love to have personal vehicles banned from Manhattan 24/7, but only if they provide exemptions for cabs & buses, delivery vehicles and handicapped-tagged cars. This is an interesting experiment, but ultimately I think it's going to create a mess for a lot of folks driving around it and a lot of people stuck in the middle of it.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Apple Patents Cheapie iPod Classic Touchscreens]]> @Kaiser-Machead: this is a technology patent, not a design patent. The diagram indicating a wheel is completely irrelevant to the technology patent they're pursuing. So people should not interpret this as a patent designed to be used in iPod Classic models just because the picture looks like that. My guess is that all iPods will be touchscreen in the near future, because it's pretty clear (as you said) that there's no reason to have a wheel when the screen does the same thing.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on iPhone Clone Battlemodo: Which One Is the iPhoniest?]]> @DustyButt: I know - I have a WinMo phone now. I was speaking to the other phones mentioned, and to the comparison chart that doesn't mention that as a feature. It's one of the biggest things to happen to the iPhone and it's also the most important thing (for me) that a phone can offer. But it's not mentioned on the chart. I don't think any of the phones in the battlemodo are open for development (except maybe for java applets). They're all closed systems and if history is any guide, they will never ever get so much as a firmware upgrade from the carriers. And it's actually my experience with a Windows Mobile device that has convinced me how important that is.

]]>
<![CDATA[weatherman commented on iPhone Clone Battlemodo: Which One Is the iPhoniest?]]> The critical things missing from the battlemodo are operating system and exchange compatibility. The iPhone clearly wins on all the other comparisons, but in particular the open development platform of the iPhone is critical for me. I want to be able to get new applications on the phone and I want a robust development community. And I need the exchange compatibility for work. So I'd settle for a decent Windows Mobile device if such a thing existed, but as of right now there's pretty much no reason to consider anything else. I'm off contract with Verizon and it's time to make the switch. iPhone 3G here I come! See you suckers in line on July 11th!

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Unicycle Transport Vehicle: Like a Segway, Only Lamer and Sweatier]]> @frigg: but the elliptical machine does have an advantage over real-world exercise; it's low impact for people with bad knees or other injuries. Creating a device that allows people to exercise outdoors in a low-impact way (and get them out of the gym) seems like a good idea to me. Bicycles are fine for that, sure, but this offers more of a running motion, so people could use it to keep up with their running friends and in situations where going 30 miles isn't practical.

<![CDATA[weatherman commented on Netflix Ditching Profiles: Sign the Petition to Keep Them]]> I loved this feature, though not really for the purpose that was intended. I used it to segment my rentals by type, so that I never ended up with more than 1 morbid documentary at a time. I particularly liked using it for TV shows on DVD so that I could always exchange one DVD of TV for another without having to constantly monitor my queue of movies.

I'm definitely writing to Netflix about this. Unless they have something better to replace it, they should not eliminate this feature.

@CCCombobreaker: Why do you say that? Sure, BR is great for HD media playing, but why wouldn't you want to back up data? I have a pretty big music library that is a huge pain to backup on DVD right now, but would fit pretty nicely on one BR. I don't have kids, but I can imagine that family movies that need to be backedup are going to take a lot of space.
