Perhaps not the greatest choice from the "second-string" driver roster, but aside from his podium in Malaysia, Heidfeld has been pretty terrible this season. I think they should've dropped him a few races ago.
I agree totally, and I think the Bolivia special should've made it as well. I love all of the specials, but I think that one might be my favorite. Can't even remember what got me hooked ... I may have even started with S1 E1, now that I think of it.
I'm totally with ya. I've watched a couple of stages in the hope that I'd get into it, but the coverage does suck. I think it's just a really tough sport to film, and with the way their daily schedules are set up it is even trickier. That said, I don't think they should change the way they're run, or try to do some dumbed-down version just for the sake of TV.
In the future I would like to see an online method for following it, where you could pull up the on-board footage of a complete stage for any driver you liked, fast-forward, rewind, etc. When we get to that point, I think we'll be able to capture the excitement of it all. The few broadcasts I caught were mostly just highlights, hopping from car to car, some outside views, some on-board. I'm sure many folks will agree that the best way to see rallying is on-board.
Just after the 2007 season, in an interview on Top Gear, he said he drives a GL420 ... a diesel. (I'm sure that's his car when he's home in England, obviously not on the F1 tour.) According to him "that's all you need on the road." Of course, the rest of us don't get to drive an F1 car on a semi-regular basis.
I can't imagine a worse place to 'open up' your new Ferrari. I guess maybe if you went up into the shanty towns around Rio and tried to gas it, you MIGHT be less successful. What a jagoff.
For real ... my great-grandmother made it to 94 and for the last few years of her life she said her vision was "like looking through wax paper." Now, that may be something that's easily fixed nowadays, but I can't possibly imagine her driving a car, even ten years before that.
It's probably been suggested many times before, but I think once you make it to 75, you should have to go into the DMV every year to pass the vision test and perhaps every other year take a road test. It's not like people who are 75+ generally have jam-packed schedules anyway.
I hope you saw James May's Toy Stories where he set up a Scalextric race track on the full original circuit! Definitely not the same as seeing a car up the banked wall at top speed, but it was cool nevertheless.
Top Gear is only one perspective, one review, one show. They simply said it how they felt it, just like every other review they've done. I'm a huge fan of Top Gear but I've seen Teslas in person and they're cool, regardless of whether or not they need charging too frequently. And if I were in the market for such an expensive car, I wouldn't let Top Gear sway me one way or the other.
TL;DR: The word of Top Gear is not the word of god. It's just a show, and just an opinion.
@bboxy - I can't say I agree, but the show Wheeler Dealers is a lot of fun to watch, if you've never seen it. The guy who buys/sells the cars is a pure weenie but Edd China who fixes them is a badass. (I actually was just watching an old Season 3 or 4 Top Gear episode and Mr. China helped them make a car into a Bond car.)
I think they should allow the DRS at any point during the lap for passing. THAT would make for some exciting stuff. And I agree, Xander, Australia's pit straight may not be the best testbed for DRS but I am still not convinced it makes a hell of a lot of difference. I wish it would negate the dirty air effect entirely when they're within that one second gap!
I was noticing that while they were showing head-on shots as they came down the pit straight — their wing is STILL super flexible and lower than any other teams. I just don't get it.
Also, the DRS completely failed as far as I'm concerned. It was a little exciting in qualifying, but utterly pointless during the race. The 'dirty air' issue still remains, and I don't think KERS is a good approach to fixing it either.
