This is the first piece of media I've seen in a while that made me feel good about Detroit, that's a good way to start my morning. Also, WOOO!! Bethany of CyberOptix ties! Now it's off to the farmer's market to get some fresh Michigan heirloom tomatoes.
Oh, well, I'm a big fat nerd and I listen to NPR (I like Michigan Radio better than WDET) and CBC Radio 2 since I have access to it here in the greater Detroit area.
@Matt White: The 5.0 for Hyundai is their second, the 4.6 was first (and made 365ish hp). The 5.0 is also not out yet (at least in the states) and is first going to be only in the Equus, a very expensive (and nice) sedan. Also keep in mind that Mercedes, who know plenty about amazing V8s, only gets 380-something out of their 5.5 liter. I'm sure all of these engines have advantages vs. each other in more subtle areas like torque curves, response, fuel economy, cost, etc, and I'm sure they're all very nice. But as far as I know, only one comes in a crate! : )
@theoneshot001,would love to have something in a nice 440 4 speed: Vs. Stone IPA Bells is more full bodied in the malting but without getting sweet or starchy, and tends to be more floral rather than piney vs. the stone. Bells is one of the many treats we have in the Michigan centered midwest brew heaven, I mean scene. Hopefully you get quite a selection of the west coast brews up there in Alaska (like Hair of the Dog, which doesn't make it all the way out here to Michigan).
I'm reminded of my friend's brother's F series pickup from the early 80's that said "Toad" on the back rather than Ford, had beat up furniture in the bed, and oddly enough didn't fit through the local Taco Bell drive through at 3 in the morning. I guess without the punk music in the tape player and a couple stickers it could pass as any hillbillie/hooligan youth car...but to us, it was totally punk rock.
Though I feel that team needs to be taken out because they're just too damn good, I hope it can be in a way besides the people's curse. That horrible frankenmiata is too (oddly) beautiful to be mauled by excavating/demo equipment. But still, just like F1 was boring when Schumacher kept winning...maybe Eyesore can retire the miata while they're ahead and start on a new project? Maybe one more hilarious/difficult than the frankenmiata? I know they've got what it takes to make it work...after a couple tries at the very least.
If one wants to go slow on four wheels, I can't think of a better way than a Kharmann Ghia. Otherwise I'd like to ride a bike (you know, with pedals rather than a motor).
There's debate about whether or not you're safer in a stationary car or a ditch in the weather safety community. It greatly depends on the depth of the ditch (steep and deep will block wind and debris, shallow and gradual will do almost nothing), and the strength and debris content of a tornado (a weak tornado without large pieces of debris is fairly easy to withstand in most non-convertibles).
The best solution by far, is to drive away if the road is safe and carries you away from the path of the tornado. Most tornadoes move around 35 miles and hour, and though that varies greatly, speeds like 75 miles and hour for a tornado are extremely rare. Just don't crash or drive into the dangerous precipitation/hail shafts.
@cobrajoe: Actually I had driven a wide variety of car sizes. My car at the time was a Tempo, but I'd driven my friend's Parisienne (spelling? a big pontiac boat, and it was stupid fun to drive until the engine finally bit it), a couple minivans owned by my parents, even another Olds only slightly smaller than the Toronado which my sister owned.
Nothing was like the Toronado, none of those other cars was half as wallowy, none of them made me literally feel drunk.
I merely included the Metro as an example of the second worst car I've ever driven.
This is SOoooo easy to answer. My friend Ben had an Olds Toronado, 4th generation, and one night in college we went to the casino, he had some drinks and I was to drive the car back as I didn't drink at that time. Years later I would confirm that yes, driving a Toronado is like being drunk, you want to go left, you do what you think should make you go left, and after some wobbling, you kinda sorta start to veer in that direction. Everything was so bouncy and delayed it almost made me nauseous, and I hit many a curb on the way home.
This was even worse than the Geo Metro with broken power steering, broken and crappy seats and spiders living in it, owned by a pizzeria I worked for which I drove a couple times.
She wants a red Mustang, probably a convertible (which I'm guessing won't be quite as nice to drive as the coupes), but I'd get her a Red Miata.
Besides the better handling (like she cares), I wouldn't get stuck tagging along in the back seat of a Mustang convertible like she wants when I visit my parents and we go out to eat. Selfish? Kinda, but still a better choice.
@ZukeZuke: It's very rare, I've only seen two respectable examples (out of MANY in the metro Detroit area). One guy who took off all the badging except the 4. The other my boss who has a stage 3 ACR SRT-4, but that's his slow car (besides his Pinto and Pacer, both of which are waiting for opportunities for engine swaps).
There are a few fun directions to go with this...
Some thing fun, but with lots of compromises (but not too uncomfortable or intimidating for Ray's dear mommy), like the Camaro with it's absolutely terrible visibility.
Something cheap, because I have a feeling she'd tear apart anything lacking in comfort and niceness.
Or maybe something completely uncheap- that is to say ridiculously expensive to see if she likes it or finds it over the top and ridiculous and why would anyone pay so much when my nice little Cadillac is already so nice and comfortable?"
Any way you slice it, I think most of us are fond of the variety that ur mom's perspective offers and find it a wonderful addition to the Jalopnik portfolio of products.
If they care about performance at all I tell them to forget that, because you can't use it legally on the road, so why not have fun instead and get an MX-5.
Otherwise, get a hatchback.
