<![CDATA[Comments from racebeer]]> <![CDATA[Comments from racebeer]]> <![CDATA[racebeer commented on Trailblazer, Envoy, 9-7X Death Date Accelerated To December 23]]> Gee .... I don't get all the hate here. Maybe because it's because I own one (2003 Rainier V8), but I have really liked mine. It hauls around my classic car with no problem, has taken two kids back and forth to college pulling U-Haul trailers, and gets the wife back and forth to work in some nasty Minnesota weather with no drama. Also, we have had 44,000 miles of trouble free driving with just normal oil changes and tire rotations. Maybe we are one of the lucky ones, but my wife wouldn't trade this truck for anything on the market today.

On a side note, the sales aren't all that bad. The Lamba "quad" sold 14,215 units in September while the old GMT360 trio sold 12,168. I have to wonder if shutting down the GMT360 line will result in a bunch of lost sales for GM next year. I can't see the Lamba line picking up that many sales in 2009 to offset the loss.

<![CDATA[racebeer commented on 1960 Triumph TR3A]]> Love these things. Had a friend in college that had a TR-3B with wires that we ran in road rallies (grind that damn peppermill.....) in Atlanta. All was great until it rained, and boy did that thing leak ALL OVER. This friend also had an early model 2002, but that story is for another column.

Great find, Murilee!!!!

<![CDATA[racebeer commented on NHRA Shortens Track After Fatal Crash, No Longer 1/4-Mile]]> I don't really see how this is going to help much. Scott's real accident occurred around the 1000 foot mark, so even if the new rule was in effect, it would not have made a bit of difference. I also agree that a 1/4 mile is a sacred number -- don't go screwing with that. The NHRA has put rules in effect before to limit speeds, and I think their older methods could be employed again. They have changed tire compounds, adjusted the nitro loads, and even limited the tranny shift points by changing from electronic to pneumatics. If it were me, I'd adjust the nitro load to drop the hp by about 1000 or so. That would drop the trap speeds by about 20mph or thereabouts ........

Just one idiot's thoughts ...........

<![CDATA[racebeer commented on 1982 Fiat X-1/9]]> This is an extremely difficult choice since I owned a Blue '74 X-1/9 and also lusted after the RX-7. However, even considering the "Hell" that the X/19 put me through, I've gotta go for the X-1/9. Having said that, the friggin' Fiat was a constant battle. Of course, I was young, and the stock 1300cc/75hp motor just didn't do it. So, being the idiot I was (AM????), I proceeded to modify it. High compression pistons, wilder cam, Webber 40 DCOE sidedraft, headers, etc. While this made it go faster, it also overstressed the frame structure. Picture this: if you can find an engine compartment shot of a '74, you will notice that there is a support bulkhead that runs behind the engine between the strut towers. You will also notice that the bulkhead is spotwelded to the struts on either side, making this a "3-piece construction" fiasco. The reason I call this a fiasco is because the upper motor torsion brace runs from the top back of the engine to the front of said bulkhead. Sooooooo ..... the extra rearward twist provided by the modded motor was too much for those spotwelds to handle, so every couple of months I had to reweld the damn bulkhead back to the strut towers just to keep the motor from twisting out of the unibody.

Having said that, when it was running, it was damn sweet in the handling department. Talk about power-off oversteer!!!! Just be careful on exit/entrance ramps --- but great in slalom competition to wind through the cones or nail a decreasing radius turn - using only the throttle.

Of course, the usual Marelli ignition problems were there in spades. Rust was a constant. The nerf bar bumpers on the '74 were much more attractive than the cow-catchers they used from '75 on up, but you better watch where you park!! Curb clearance on the front spoiler was non-existent (replaced that piece of sheet metal about 4 times). All in all, fun as hell, but VERY FRAGILE!!!!! I finally got tired of the welding, so I "hid" the weld repairs as best I could, and traded it for the '79 Alfa. THAT is another story for another time ............ let's just say I avoid Italian cars.

<![CDATA[racebeer commented on Does "El Camino" Work For The New Pontiac G8 Sport Truck?]]> Gotta go a bit against the Jalopnik grain here .... I'm for using an old Pontiac name --- Safari. <![CDATA[racebeer commented on 1989 Alfa Romeo Graduate]]> I love old Alfas ... eventhough they are a PITA to maintain. In my younger years I had a 78 GTV that was bought new. In the 4 years I had it, lets review the "maintenance record":

Rear calipers replaced twice (inboard on the tranny, always leaked)
U-joint rubber donuts in the drive shaft -- every 6 months
Brake pads every 3000 miles (my fault...)
Rusting rear hatch cover -- TWICE!!!!!
2nd gear syncro - twice
Engine re-sleeved @ 36000 miles -- burning a quart of oil every 200 miles

One note on the syncro deal -- when the boys in Italy designed this little rear mounted tranny, they used metal teeth on the gears that was less strong than the metal on the syncro. So, it wasn't the syncro slider that had to be replaced, it was the 2nd gear cluster since the syncro teeth on it were worn out. Great design work, guys!!!

HOWEVER ...... when this beauty was running, it had to be the most enjoyable drive ever. The sounds, the connection to the road, the "feel" of being a part of the machine. Just incredible .... and so Italian!!!! I hated to see it go, but the expense was just too much to handle. Hmm ... wonder if I can pick another one up on e-Bay?!?!?!?

<![CDATA[racebeer commented on Less Teenagers Applying For Driver's Licenses, What's The Matter With Kids Today?]]> I don't get the trend either. Must be the video games or something. I got both my learner's permit on my birthday at 14 and my license at 16 on my birthday (still have it as a badge of pride....). Took the test in a '63 Bonneville 4 door hardtop --- I'd like to see some kid parallel park THAT beast today.

When my kids "became of age", they got their license so their mom and I wouldn't have to cart them everywhere. The kids today just don't seem to care. We're losing a generation of motorheads!!!! (SIGH...............)

<![CDATA[racebeer commented on Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Toyota Venza Crossover Sedan]]> I can hear the Toyota boys talking .... "Gee, we don't have anything betweem the Rav4 and the Highlander, so let's make a CX-7/9 clone!!!!" This whole SUV/cuteUTE/CUV/whatever craze has gone totally off the deep end. The sooner GM brings in a proper G8 wagon from the boys down under, the better off we will all be.

<![CDATA[racebeer commented on How Are American Cars Doing?]]> @ZZMarcus:

First off, Click and Clack are nothing more than a couple of NPR dildos making money off the idiots of the world. DANIO3834 has it right .... the Japanese look at what we do, copy it, improve it, miniaturize it. Not exactly original thought, but I'll give them full credit for constant improvement.

More to the point, I've owner both foreign and domestic, and have spent far less on my domestic iron that the imported stuff over a 37 year timeframe. Since the late 90's, I've owned nothing but domestic, and have had excellent service from them. Anyone who dismisses the Domestics as manufacturing drivel had best take another look. Perfect?? No.... but neither are Honda or Toyota
