<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Five Reasons High Gas Prices Are Good For Real Drivers]]> Reason #6 for why high fuel prices are good... More stick shift cars being bought new (hopefully). Automatics cost more and most of them cause the car to use more fuel and slower accelleration.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on PUTC: 2013 Ford F-150 To Get Four-Cylinder EcoBoost Engine]]> @AndyDuncan: I would argue that even that 250 HP is still a lot for a base engine.

Remember... in the 1980s, the base 300ci I6 engine in the Ford F150 only made 150HP at around 3400rpm in FI form. In carb'd form it made as little as 101HP.

I'm sure the 2.5L Ecoboost will be more than adequate for a base engine.

If they lighten up the body, they could probably even get away with a lower HP/Higher torque version of the Non-Turbo 2.5L 4 cyl. That engine already makes 170HP/170lb-ft torque as it is.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Car & Driver Drags Odd Couple Car Combos, Shows Mom's V6 Camry Is As Good As A WRX]]> This reminds me of an article I read a while back that pitted the 240HP (at the time) Honda minivan against classic performance cars like the Jag E-type... the minivan was faster than all of them.

@Bad Juju: Yep... my thoughts exactly. But we had years of cheap gas, so people always went for power.

It's hilarious how people think cars like the Smart car don't have enough power for highway driving... yet these same people drove cars that were more gutless (like the hundreds of thousands of people who drove Beetles and VW Microbuses) when they were growing up and it was perfectly fine.

Yep... people "Need" all that power for stop-and-go traffic every day.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Are Cars Getting Uglier?]]> I don't think cars are any uglier overall. Every generation has a share of ugly cars. The Edsel, for example, flopped because it looked like it was sucking on a lemon.

Yeah, the new Honda Pilot looks like crap. But the new Civic it one of the nicest looking Civics ever.

I think there are many really nice looking cars today such as the Elise and the Corvette.

I also agree the Honda Accord doesn't look that great... but the Nissan Altima does.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Chrysler To America: "Please, Please Buy Our 2008 Dodge Ram"]]> @UDMan: Do Toyota and Nissan do that to their dealers as well?

This sounds stupid to me. I would think it limits a dealer's ability to sell what is actually in demand... so what the dealer ends up with is too much product that doesn't sell and not enough that does which probably reduces total overall sales and hurts the value of the brand because then dealers have to give away the stuff that isn't selling.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Smug Gets Home-Grown: 2011 Toyota Prius Officially To Be Built In United States]]> @anaxomander: I wouldn't be so quick to ban him.

With people like this, I prefer to view them as lost sheep who need guidance. You can't guide someone you've banned.

It's kind of like my arguments with RLJ... I never asked him to be banned just because I consider his views to be detatched from what's really going on. And I even got him to grudgingly concede on a few things.

Even though I don't agree with GasGuzzler myself either, banning him just reduces the amount of ideas exchanged... even if the idea exchange can be heated at times.

And at least GasGuzzler doesn't TYPE IN ALL CAPS or spells "you are" as "u r" or just starts cursing people out without actually saying anything else.

]]>
<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Smug Gets Home-Grown: 2011 Toyota Prius Officially To Be Built In United States]]> @rlj676: "Second, Toyota has done THE WORST job of "gauging" the future market."

Yeah... the Lexus RX300/Toyota Highlander and the subsequent versions of those vehicles and other crossovers played a BIG role in popularizing crossovers in general were real "failures".

"I don't know that any hyrbrids are yet sold for a profit."

Yeah... there no way there's *any* profit in those Lexus Hybrids...*cough*. Not to mention the fact that the Prius has been on the market long enough that the costs have been sufficiently amortized that Toyota is in fact making money on the Prius.

But I suppose that since you don't know about it, it must be "impossible", eh?

The only mistake I can see Toyota made recently is overestimating how much market share they were going to gain with their more recent large Trucks/SUVs.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Smug Gets Home-Grown: 2011 Toyota Prius Officially To Be Built In United States]]> @GasGuzzler: Oh goodie, more battery powered Beauty. I love the Prius and everything it represents. You know what sound a Prius makes as it drives by? "I don't need a car to prove I'm NOT gay . . ." Every time I see one I'm tempted to steer my car towards it and get a closer look and give the intelligent person driving it the thumbs up. Great vehicle, beautiful vehicle, I can't wait for those battery backs to start crapping out after 160,000+ miles so I can buy a used one cheap (and replace the batteries myself cheaply since by that time they'll be widely and cheaply available), then all the idiots that bought a truck will be up shit's creek even worse and "hybrid synergy drive" will drive the value of their increasingly worthless vehicles right down to nothing.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on How Important Is Crash Test Performance To You?]]> The way I look at it, any car is safer than a bicycle or a motorcycle. And since I often commute by bicycle, then it would be ridiculous for me to say that any given car isn't safe enough.

But there's other sides to safety that many forget to consider... such as the safety of the driver and how well the car is maintained.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Tata Nano To Offer Compressed Air Engine Optional, Make Electric Cars Look Silly]]> "However, the air compressor engine can rely on almost any power source. All it has to do is be converted by way of air compressor."

Same goes for electric cars... except that the electric car has an efficiency advantage because the energy is merely being stored in the battery whereas in the air car the electricity/energy needs to be converted into compressed air... which is not as efficient because air heats up as it is compressed. And air expands as it gets hot... not something you want when you're trying to compress it efficiently.

The only advantage the air engine has is that it is cheap.

It is inferior in every other way.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Polling Confirms Americans Will Not Drive 55, Also They Don't Understand Energy Policy]]> @GasGuzzler: "In this country natural gas, oil, and coal mainly."

Actually... large amounts also get generated from Nuclear and hydroelectric too. Plus a miniscule amount is made from wind and solar.

Another fact is that even if all cars were electric and all electricity were generated by coal, there would still be a big drop in pollution because Coal power plants are more efficient than an ICE and electric motors are MUCH more efficient than an ICE.

<![CDATA[petersterncan commented on Ferrari To Rich Customers: You Give Us Money, We Build You A One-Off]]> Hmmm... How about we take a 612, swap the V12 for a V8, convert it to FWD, use the automatic tiptronic from the Porsche 911, add some red shag carpet, Red velvet seats, add some light green exterior paint (the kind of green seen on the 1st gen Prius), tail lights from a 1988 Fiero GT, wheels from a Cadilac Escalade (and raise the suspension accordingly), some fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror, Gold plated accents around the wheel wells, Gold Plated grille, Gold plated door handles, gold plated rocker panels, two spoilers - one for the trunk and one for the roof, deeply tinted windows and some neon lights under the car.

Viola... Ferrari 612... Liberace Edition
