The 427 was a street-version of a track engine. To the best of my knowledge, it was available only in the Fairlane/Torino, in order to satisfy NASCAR requirements. It had a very high, lumpy idle unsuitable for a slushbox, especially in a car like the TBird.
Not so easy, this was well before the boxer era for Subaru. The 360 had a vertical twin two stroke air cooled engine, just like lots of Japanese bikes then.

Not true. What "expensive restricitions" German brands sell very well in Japan. Japan actually bent over backwards to help GM sell Cavaliers there. Guess what? The Japanese didn't like them!
