@boomchek: There aren't any speed cameras on motorways (except in roadworks areas).

And they only trigger if you are exceeding the speed limit by 10-15mph.

And they aren't operated by the police or connected to police stations.

Other than that, great suggestion.
@danio3834: Basically, you all wanted diesels but didn't know it. My 330d only makes 228bhp, but has the same effortless low-rev torque that these strangled V8s were aiming for.
Could someone explain to an ignorant Euro, why it took almost 5l of V8 to make the same power as a very mild European 2l engine of the same era? In fact the only way I can think of making 134bhp from a 5l V8 is putting a 2000rpm limiter on it...
I suspect Lily is the only celeb who posts herself J-turning and generally hooning on youtube. (Yes, I'm a Lily Allen fan, what of it?)
@Shep_Shepherd: Whenever I'm in SA, I always rent a Citi Golf. I mainly work in the Jo'burg CBD, so try not to stand out for obvious reasons. I'm not really used to FWD cars and find the torque steer hilarious - floor it at a 'robot' and you have no idea what direction the car is going to take off in...
@RamblinReck89: Be careful what you wish for. Her brother pissed her off and she responded with this:
What on earth is going on with those bumpers?
Slightly skewed by my UK/European upringing here... 1. 1976 Austin Princess (though it was cool when I was a kid) 2. 1980 Morris Ital (best mate's parents had one - the diff caught fire) 3. 1973 Austin Allegro (knew it was a POS even as a 3 year old) 4. 1986 Austin Maestro (seeing a trend here?) 5. 1974 Renault 4L (best memory: friend's mother goes for 4th... and the gear lever came all the way out) 6. 1978 Citroen Visa Special (a 2CV6, but heavier...) 7. 1978 Talbot Horizon (word's fail me...) 8. 2009 VW Citi Golf (huge fun in SA, but can you imagine driving it in a 1st World country? ok, maybe...) 9. 1978 Citroen Mehari (learned to drive in one, wouldn't want to hit anything in it) 10. 2008 Kia Cee'd (had one as a rental, wife (e30 devotee) nearly rolled it at the first roundabout; truly terrifying handling. can't believe that such a car could even pass type approval.)
@sos10: We have it in the UK too (although of course it's a mirror image). Unfortunately, someone seems to have forgotten to tell the legions of Volvo, SUV and minivan drivers who join a motorway and immediately sit in lane 2 at a steady 65mph, despite lane 1 being completely empty, because they don't want to risk being stuck behind a truck and having to perform the desperately complex manoeuver known as "overtaking". Luckily, being a BMW-driving cock, I'm allowed by Act of Parliament to immediately head for lane 3, switch on my front fogs and bully out of the way all the Kias, Hyundais etc that have inadvertently strayed into enemy territory while trying to overtake the lane 2 Volvos and Ford C-Maxs. Nick #autobahn
@Old_Car_Guy: Right, so none of your passengers are allowed to use phones? And you can't use a hands-free kit?
Here's a photo of the car after the accident - as you can see the front end is a complete disaster and it will probably be written off.
@ugadawg: Yeah, I found out about it as all my American colleagues started asking about it. It's a completely made up story - the give-away is that it's in the Daily Express. It's been immediately refuted by the Minister concerned (Ed Balls) here: [twitter.com] Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of non-UKians make the mistake of reading a story in a UK newspaper and assuming it actually has some bearing on reality - half my American colleagues are still convinced that teaching about the Holocaust has been banned in UK schools due to a similar made-up story several years ago :-(
@Jim-Bob: Can you point me to anything about CCTV in council houses? I find this absolutely extraordinary and surely a breach of Article 8 of the HRA. I live in the UK and I've never heard of this before I must admit.
Wooooah, #3 suggests you were stood right next to me Peter! That was at the startline during the supercar run on Sunday right?

The supercars were pretty boring to be honest, incredibly quiet (except for the Zonda R) and really non-descript. After seeing a 917/30 do a fullbore start, most things are boring and quiet though.

@Cygp2p: From the entry programme:

Class 5 'Iconic Indy Cars'

500 Lola-Cosworth T500 built 1978 Entrant: Indianapolis Hall of Fame Driver: Al Unser Sr

I don't think it's a replica...

As Peter will attest, this is just a tiny, and I mean _tiny_ sample of the entries. I have the entry programme here (beautifully printed of course), here are some examples of the classes:

Class 52 'Legendry Group B Cars': Audo Quattro A2 (driver Hannu Mikkola), Porsche 953 (Driver Wolf-Dieter Ihle), Peugeot 205 T16 (driver Enda Garvey) + 13 others

Class 22 '40 Years of the Porsche 917' - 12 917s!!! The 917/30 was driven by Derek Bell...

Class 11 '40 Years of Frank Williams in F1' - 13 Williams F1 cars

Class 7 '75 Years of the Silver Arrows' - 15 MBs, with drivers including Jenson Button (with excited and lovely Jessica waving him on mere metres from me), Jacky Ickx, Nick Mason, Jochen Mass, Stirling Moss

There are 52 classes in total...

Other highlights for me - Stirling Moss driving the McMerc 722 Stirling Moss edition, Lewis Hamilton driving last years Mclaren, the Red Arrows, a _tiny_ Taylor Earnhardt driving her dad's No. 3 Goodwrench Monte Carlo up the hill and then giving me a big smile in the Cathedral Paddock as I was the only person who knew who she was (either that, or she was creeped out), Jessica Michibata again...

Other highlights that I saw on

My wife has a 1989 320i wagon - cost her £500 a couple of years ago - currently worth exactly the same I imagine. It's sweet and fun, all the toys work (electric windows, sunroof, heated mirrors, headlight wipers etc), but it's really not worth anything more than that.
@ptmeyer84 - Chief Jalopalope: It was a Brown Hare, they're big (and very tasty...)
@cchannel: You're thinking of the West's number one ally in the middle east, Saudi Arabia. Iran is quite enlightened in comparison.
